French Riviera: Uniquely Chic
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | In this program, we follow in the footsteps of 19th-century aristocrats along Nice's Promenade des Anglais. Then we listen to the graceful reshuffling of personal fortunes at the casino in fairy-tale Monaco, and visit the picturesque artist hangouts of Chagall, Matisse, and Picasso.

We are going to talk about traveling with toddlers. To be more exact, about grandparents traveling with a 2.5 year old toddler from Toronto, Canada to Nice, France for a 10-day vacation. Of course, with the parent consent letter. Some people say that flying with a toddler is an absolute nightmare. I can say that we did not have any problem because we prepared well. The only problem was staying in a long line at the border control in Amsterdam airport with our granddaughter sleeping in my hands.
In preparation for our flight, we showed Rina several videos describing the security screening and the flight. On my laptop, I had several educational videos, which usually work very well for sleeping (“A professor is one who talks in someone else's sleep”, you know) and of course several episodes of Masha and the Bear. Cartoons and movies can help keep the child busy during a sizeable chunk of flight time and allow grandparents some rest, too. We also prepared for drawing and coloring and downloaded several kids’ applications on my laptop and smartphone.
No computer games at all — this policy worked well with our kids (when they grew up, they thanked us for it) and now with our grandkids. We downloaded only several applications designed for creativity.
We also prepared some presents like small soft animals, dolls, and stickers. A lot of stickers and a notebook to place them. Stickers are great for keeping a 2 or 3-year old entertained for a long time. They can decorate not only a notebook but also a water bottle dispensed by the flight attendant.
Landing can cause pain in kid’s ears. Therefore we prepared some sweets for take-off and landing during our four flights. We also used these sweets to bribe our girl when I wanted her to make some acting in front of the camera.
Beaulieu-sur-Mer is a seaside town on the French Riviera between Monaco and Nice. The French name means “Beautiful place near the sea”. We decided to go there because of its sandy beaches, which are good for small kids.
It is convenient to take a bus #99 “Gare SNCF”, which goes to the main railway station called Gare de Nice-Ville or Gare SNCF or Gare Thiers and from there to take a train to Beaulieu-sur-Mer. It takes about 10 minutes to get to Beaulieu-sur-Mer from Gare Nice-Ville.
We lived in a three-star hotel Marcellin 400 meters from the beach. Good hotel. We liked it.
We took the train to Nice. Our aim was to show Rina the city, the seafront and the Fontaine Miroir d’eau (Mirror Fountain) on the Promenade du Paillon which is a relatively new place opened in 2013. The fountain is a large grid of water jets liked by children and grown-ups alike. These jets sometimes puff out a gentle cooling mist and sometimes they shot high fountains of water. Children love running between the jets and jump over them.
The six-kilometer Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat Hike hike is really special because of the great contrast between the lush green of Cap Ferrat and the blue waters of the Mediterranean. Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is the commune located on a peninsula between Beaulieu-sur-Mer and Villefranche-sur-Mer. Its warm climate and tranquility make it a favorite holiday destination for millionaires. However, those who are on a tight budget can enjoy hiking and swimming on several beaches. The walking trail around the peninsula alongside numerous millionaires’ villas winds its way around the edge of the peninsula. We walked the trail with our granddaughter, sometimes on my shoulders without any problem. Some parts of the path are not fenced, therefore if you are hiking with small kids, hold them by the hand all the times.

23. Vacation in Cote d'Azur, France
Lee and I, her sister and brother-in-law, Khanh and Don, went to Cote d'Azur in October 2010. We stayed in Nice, rented a car, and went to Eze Village, Monaco, St Tropez and Cannes. I captured our wonderful trip in this short video. The second song in this video is called Bilitis, written by Francis Lai who is a Nice native and wrote unforgettable songs for the movie 'Love Story'. Hope you enjoy it.

St Paul de Vence at night
St Paul de Vence in the South of France is one of the best-preserved and prettiest medieval villages in all of Europe.
In this episode we will take you on a walk through the village in the late afternoon and early evening when the lighting is at its most beguiling with the soft glow of twilight, and it's very quiet. The shops are closed and there's just a few people walking about,
there is one main Lane in the village of Morgan a walk you along its entire length from one fun into the other, and then back again.
We have another episode where we've taken you through St Paul during the daytime and charges in many art galleries in the shops and cafés. In the evening the village takes on a different character altogether. It's more tranquil, with hardly any visitors, especially now in the off-season, and you really get a chance to take in the physical beauty of St Paul de Vence.
There's no graffiti. There is no trash. Nothing is broken here. Everything is sparkling. Even the paving on the lanes is precise and beautiful. Even the dogs have to be careful where they go. They keep the place spic and span, so if you want to see an old medieval village, go visit St Paul de Vence.
As we walk around this beautiful village we're going to share with you some information that was provided on the tourist information office website. They have a very helpful tourist information office in the village, and of course you can look online at their website as well and learned a lot more.
The Place de la Grand Fontaine stands in the very center of town. Redesigned in the 17th and again in the 19th century, this square has always been the busiest spot in the village. One of the features of the tourist information office is walking tour: there are 10 different guided walks that you can take with a local guide. One of them, them is called history and heritage. They say that they that every block of stone in St Paul de Vence has a story to tell.
The walls, the ramparts, houses and the towers have plenty to say about the villages rich past. Numerous narrow lanes branch off from they one little Main Street and descend by steps and arcades down to the road which runs around the walls.
St Paul de Vence is quite small, just 400 m long and about 100 m wide, and yet, within this small space you're going to find that practically every square inch is worth looking at carefully. It is just beautifully put together. The population lives within the walls is only 300 people, and yet each year it gets 2 1/2 million visitors, so it can get quite crowded, especially during the busy season, say from April through September. If you can it's better to come here in the off-season: November, December, January are really quite lovely. And you'll find the shops and galleries are open throughout the year.
The town is quiet in clean, spotless, scrubbed, so clean, no hint of graffiti. It's full of picturesque lanes of quaint corners and odd passages.
The main Street, and all the side alleys are of the continuations of the original mule paths of the old days, interrupted here and there with steps in way too narrow to admit a car of any kind.
Certainly you could spend just an hour or two or three hours visiting St Paul de Vence, walk around and enjoy its charms, but you might find that you'd like to spend a night or two here and use it as a base for exploring some of the surrounding countryside. And if you'd like to do that, you have some overnight accommodations. Outside the walls of the town, there are seven hotels located nearby and inside the walls are actually two lovely hotels.
In the 20th century, some Paul was discovered by actors and poets and writers the 1950s and 60s were the villages Golden age, when St Paul became an amazing film set hosting French and foreign movie stars drawn to the French Riviera by the Victorine film studios in Nice and by the Cannes Film Festival.
First cobbles were laid on village streets in the 1950s. Today you'll notice the streets are immaculately paved in what looks like first-class work of mosaic art. Cobblestone lanes here are among the finest that you'll ever see.
St Paul appears so unlike our modern workaday world of hotels, houses and shops that one can hardly believe that this place is real and we're not seeing them in some happy dream. It is very real, however -- it has its modern life of births, deaths and marriages and ancient history, dating as far back as the ninth century.
Before leaving St Paul however, you should consider visiting the nearby contemporary art museum, the Maeght Foundation. It's an easy walk from St Paul, just takes about 20 minutes or less, and into the garden courtyard where you'll be seeing enjoying sculptures in the yard by Giocometti, Miro, Leger and many others, including Calder, Chagall and Braque.
Côte d'Azur, France part 1/3 (Nice, Èze), Monaco
Sights of Nice, Èze, Monaco, Côte d'Azur, France, during a trip in April - May 2019.
The French Riviera (known in French as the Côte d'Azur - Blue Coast) is the Mediterranean coastline of the southeast corner of France. There is no official boundary, but it is usually considered to extend from Cassis or Toulon on the west to the France–Italy border in the east, where the Italian Riviera joins. The name 'Côte d'Azur' was given to the coast by the writer Stéphen Liégeard in his book, La Côte d’azur, published in December 1887.
This coastline was one of the first modern resort areas. It began as a winter health resort for the British upper class at the end of the 18th century. With the arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century, it became the vacation spot of British, Russian, and other aristocrats, such as Queen Victoria and King Edward VII, when he was Prince of Wales. It was frequented by artists and writers, including Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Francis Bacon, Edith Wharton, Somerset Maugham and Aldous Huxley, as well as wealthy Americans and Europeans. After World War II, it became a popular tourist destination and convention site. Many celebrities, such as Elton John and Brigitte Bardot, have homes in the region.
Its largest city is Nice, The natural environment and the mild Mediterranean climate of Nice came to the attention of the English upper classes in the second half of the 18th century, when an increasing number of aristocratic families took to spending their winters there. The city's main seaside promenade, the 'Promenade des Anglais' (Walkway of the English) owes its name to visitors to the resort. The clear air and soft light have particularly appealed to notable painters, such as Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Niki de Saint Phalle and Arman. Their work is commemorated in many of the city's museums, including Musée Marc Chagall, Musée Matisse and Musée des Beaux-Arts.
Principality of Monaco is a sovereign city-state, country, and microstate on the French Riviera. Monaco has an area of about 2 km², making it the second-smallest country in the world after the Vatican. Its population is about 38400 (2016). With about 19000 inhabitants per km², it is the most densely-populated sovereign state in the world.
Monaco is a constitutional monarchy, with Prince Albert II as head of state. The House of Grimaldi has ruled Monaco, with brief interruptions, since 1297. The official language is French, but Monégasque, Italian, and English are widely spoken and understood. The state's sovereignty was officially recognized by the Franco-Monegasque Treaty of 1861, with Monaco becoming a full United Nations voting member in 1993. Despite Monaco's independence and separate foreign policy, its defence is the responsibility of France. However, Monaco does maintain two small military units.
Economic development was spurred in the late 19th century with the opening of the country's first casino, Monte Carlo, and a railway connection to Paris. Since then, Monaco's mild climate, scenery, and gambling facilities have contributed to the principality's status as a tourist destination and recreation centre for the rich. In more recent years, Monaco has become a major banking centre. The state has no income tax, low business taxes, and is well known for being a tax haven. It is also the host of the annual street circuit motor race 'Monaco Grand Prix', one of the original Grands Prix of Formula One.
The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco was inaugurated in 1910 by Monaco's modernist reformer, Prince Albert I. Jacques-Yves Cousteau was director from 1957 to 1988. (Excerpts from 'Wikipedia)

Driving Along French Riviera - Marseille to Fréjus
Video shot on April 21st, 2019
We're on another adventure! This time we decided to rent a car and drive along the French Riviera (La Côte d’Azur). It's always been a dream to visit the small seaside towns nestled along the cliffs of the mediterranean. Unfortunately, we picked the one week where this fabulous spring weather decided to stop and give us rain; however to be honest, the bad weather actually held back for a good portion of our drive. Our trip, juxtaposed against the postcards one typically sees, gave us a very cool and different perspective. Seeing the mediterranean sea, which is typically calm and serene, produced menacing waves, and was fun to watch as we drove the winding roads along the coast of the French Riviera. The soft fluffy grayish clouds looked very ominous in the distance. These scenes contrasting with the beautifully colored homes nestled on the cliff sides gave us a different and awe inspiring journey.
Background music is not produced by me. I'm not that good.... It's produced by BenSound (bensound.com) - Maybe one day I will meet him. It's good stuff.

Nice is the unofficial capital of the Côte d’Azur, and a must-see for every visitor. A magnet for sunseekers and high-rollers since the 19th century, sunning yourself on its popular beaches. (Just don't expect soft sand—these beaches have pebbles.) Walk up to Castle Hill for a beautiful view of the city and it has also long attracted artists.

10 very cool reasons to add Montreal to your travel list - Travel Guide vs Booking
After slipping his shackles on the Mediterranean island of Elba Napoleon Bonaparte bowled up at Golfe-Juan aboard the brig, Inconstant. With his motley crew of supporters he marched into the tinsel town of Cannes, then a fishing port, gathering more cut-throats and rakings before setting off on foot to recapture Paris. It was March 1 1815, and the start of The Hundred Days – the last gasp of his empire.Idecided to follow in his footsteps along the famous 200-mile 'Route Napoleon', through the western Alps.Like Napoleon, I went on to Paris along the great flat plain of eastern France, though the iconic eponymous journey officially ends where the Alpine scenery ends – in Grenoble. But unlike the little General, I was in a soft-top Jaguar F-Type, as I didn’t have 100 days to spare.I had sailed into the Spanish port of Santander after taking the Brittany Ferries cruise from Portsmouth, then drove over the Pyrenees and across the whole of the South of France to get to the start. This is not the fastest route to Cannes but I cannot think of a more enjoyable way of getting to the start of a journey that would, at least for Napoleon, be a grim grand tour, ending with exile and death.Shortly after meeting his Waterloo. Golfe-Juan is now a flashy marina so my choice of car was in keeping. The F-Type is the ideal vehicle for the fabulously scenic and tortuous road through the Alpes-Maritimes.After a coffee at the port I rumbled into Cannes to pick up my one and only passenger (just as well as it's a two-seater).Ana was standing outside Notre-Dame de Bon Voyage, the church where Napoleon pitched his first camp.We gunned up to Grasse, the perfume capital of the world, where views across the Golfe de la Napoule, the Lérins islands and the whole roaring Riviera are framed in the east by the snow capped Alps and to the west by the jagged red Esterel range. The Côte d'Azur, despite its concrete touristic hives, is still a marvel. Idonned my fake Ray Bans and clambered back behind the wheel, pushing the button to take down the hood. There's another button you can press to make the engine roar like a primordial beast and I pressed that, too.Even here, in Lambo Land, where Ferraris are more common than Fiat Puntos, the F-Type cuts a dash. Its squat rear and sleek body suggests serious intent, and its performance is up there with most of the Italian supercars. We were in the F-type S convertible AWD, which does 0-60 in 4.8 seconds. The R version is 1.5 seconds faster.'Don't ever borrow one of those,' said Ana in a tone that was pleading yet challenging.'Of course not, my dear,' I replied. We wound our way up through the town centre, then over the top and into Provence profonde, towards St-Vallier-de-Thiey and Castellane. Here the lush green lowlands suddenly gave way to an arid terrain of rocks and giant slabs of granite. There were snow-capped peaks to the north as we entered the tongue-tripping Parc Naturel Régional des Préalpes d'Azur. The sea was shimmering in the distance, partially obscured by a heat haze, before finally disappearing behind a ridge. The gravel tones of the three-litre supercharged engine shattered the afternoon peace as we powered up the winding road, rounding a bend to be greeted by a cliff edge horizon that resembled a giant serrated blade. The road quickly passed the 1,000 metre mark and suddenly the barren rockscape gave way to a plateau of rolling meadows and hay bales, straight from a Constable canvas. As we approached the Parc naturel régional du Verdon the meadows gave way to fields of lavender.I was happy to see that the route would not take us along that precipitous road on which I had frozen in terror a decade before, while crawling along the Gorge de Verdon in a campervan.I don't mind speed, but I sure mind heights. Soon we were passing through Digne-les-Bains, the capital of Haute Provence.Man has been here since Neolithic times, attracted by the thermal waters. Napoleon dropped by 202 years ago before marching on to the Royalist town of Sisteron, where he and his growing band of followers were greeted with a chilly and rather brave silence.Sisteron is a spectacular small to

Chance of a Lifetime | South of France September 09
Rosie and myself went to the South of France. We flew to Rodez, drove to Millau and stayed in a châteaux, then drove over the Millau Viaduct in our soft top car. Oh yeah! Then we drove to Montpellier (amazing! our new Paris!) and syaed in the New Hotel du Midi on Place de la Comedie, next to the Opera House. After that we travelled back to Rodez via the Lac du Salagou and La Couvertoirade, a Templar Knights village. Not bad for five four days! The song is I wish u heaven, written by Prince and performed by Storm Gordon. Shout out of a big thank you to Mansell!

Nice
Nice (/ˈniːs/, French pronunciation: [nis]; Niçard Occitan: Niça [classical norm] or Nissa [nonstandard], Italian: Nizza or Nizza Marittima, Greek: Νίκαια, Latin: Nicaea) is the fifth most populous city in France, after Paris, Marseille, Lyon and Toulouse, and it is the capital of the Alpes Maritimes département. The urban area of Nice extends beyond the administrative city limits with a population of about 1 million on an area of 721 km2 (278 sq mi). Located on the south east coast of France on the Mediterranean Sea, Nice is the second-largest French city on the Mediterranean coast and the second-largest city in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region after Marseille.
The city is called Nice la Belle (Nissa La Bella in Niçard), which means Nice the Beautiful, which is also the title of the unofficial anthem of Nice, written by Menica Rondelly in 1912.

Tambi LOVES Snorkeling At The Coral Garden | Sailboat Story 119
In this video we leave the calmest anchorage, travel through the flattest seas, and snorkel in the clearest water. It was a rad day. RAD I SAY!
Hawksbill Cay is the anchorage in the very beginning of the video. Amazing place. Great beach, great anchorage, cool ruins. Gotta watch out as your leaving because you want to be sure you've got plenty of water under your keep because you have to weave through patches of small, scattered coral heads as you depart.
From there we head towards Soldier Cay to snorkel the Coral Garden that is just South of the Cay. There a little bit of intricate maneuvering as you leave the banks and strike off towards the cays, but it's not all that bad. I'll share some of the navigational details within the video.
Once at the Coral Gardens we dive right in and enjoy Tambi's most favorite spot to snorkel in all of the Bahamas. She could spend hours snorkeling here. She does just that actually. She stays in the water so long that Molly and I head back to the dinghy to get un-pruny, but Tambi snorkels on - observing the plethora of sea-life and coral that exists, protected, in great abundance at this location.
Thanks for watching!!
