Saint Petersburg, Russia - SPB Tours - Two Day Deluxe Tour (2018)
Saint Petersburg (Russian: Санкт-Петербу́рг, tr. Sankt-Peterburg, IPA: [ˈsankt pʲɪtʲɪrˈburk] (About this sound listen)) is Russia's second-largest city after Moscow, with five million inhabitants in 2012. An important Russian port on the Baltic Sea, it has a status of a federal subject (a federal city).
Situated on the Neva River, at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea, it was founded by Tsar Peter the Great on May 27 [O.S. 16] 1703. On 1 September 1914, the name was changed from Saint Petersburg to Petrograd (Russian: Петрогра́д, IPA: [pʲɪtrɐˈgrat]), on 26 January 1924 to Leningrad (Russian: Ленингра́д, IPA: [lʲɪnʲɪnˈgrat]), and on 7 September 1991 back to Saint Petersburg. Between 1713 and 1728 and in 1732–1918, Saint Petersburg was the capital of Imperial Russia. In 1918, the central government bodies moved to Moscow.
Saint Petersburg is one of the modern cities of Russia, as well as its cultural capital. The Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Saint Petersburg is home to the Hermitage, one of the largest art museums in the world. Many foreign consulates, international corporations, banks and businesses have offices in Saint Petersburg.
Saint Petersburg hosted the games of 2018 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2020.

Guys when visiting St. Petersburg Russia ( landmarks, museum and palaces ) be prepared for a busy crowd, especially the Winter Palace and Hermitage....make sure to book tickets ahead of time of might as well book a guided tour via SPB and have them take care of your itinerary. If you have babies or toddlers, it is best to put them on a carrier, the crowd can be really thick and you don't want to end up losing your kid.

SPB Tour - Going through the Gates at Catherine Palace in Saint Petersburg, Russia
More than 100 kilograms of gold were used to gild the sophisticated stucco façade and numerous statues erected on the roof. It was even rumoured that the palace's roof was constructed entirely of gold. In front of the palace a great formal garden was laid out. It centres on the azure-and-white Hermitage Pavilion near the lake, designed by Mikhail Zemtsov in 1744, remodelled by Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli in 1749 and formerly crowned by a grand-gilded sculpture representing The Rape of Persephone. The interior of the pavilion featured dining tables with dumbwaiter mechanisms. The grand entrance to the palace is flanked by two massive circumferences, also in the Rococo style. A delicate cast-iron grille separates the complex from the town of Tsarskoe Selo.
Although the palace is popularly associated with Catherine the Great, she actually regarded its whipped cream architecture as old-fashioned. When she ascended to the throne, a number of statues in the park were being covered with gold, in accordance with the last wish of Empress Elizabeth, yet the new monarch had all the works suspended upon being informed about the expense. In her memoirs she censured her predecessor's reckless extravagance:

Saint Petersburg (Russian: Санкт-Петербу́рг.
Unlike in Moscow, in Saint Petersburg the historic architecture of the city centre, mostly consisting of Baroque and neoclassical buildings of the 18th and 19th centuries, has been largely preserved; although a number of buildings were demolished after the Bolsheviks' seizure of power, during the Siege of Leningrad and in recent years. The oldest of the remaining building is a wooden house built for Peter I in 1703 on the shore of the Neva near Trinity Square. Since 1991 the Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments in Saint Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast have been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The ensemble of Peter and Paul Fortress with the Peter and Paul Cathedral takes a dominant position on Zayachy Island along the right bank of the Neva River. Each noon a cannon fires a blank shot from the fortress. The Saint Petersburg Mosque, the largest mosque in Europe when opened in 1913, is situated on the right bank nearby. The Spit of Vasilievsky Island, which splits the river into two largest armlets, the Bolshaya Neva and Malaya Neva, is connected to the northern bank (Petrogradsky Island) via the Exchange Bridge and occupied by the Old Saint Petersburg Stock Exchange and Rostral Columns. The southern coast of Vasilyevsky Island along the Bolshaya Neva features some of the city's oldest buildings, dating from the 18th century, including the Kunstkamera, Twelve Collegia, Menshikov Palace and Imperial Academy of Arts. It hosts one of two campuses of Saint Petersburg State University.

This tour is a combination of two of our most popular half day tour plus an evening Russian Folkloric show. This three tour combination lets you enjoy City Highlights and the Peter & Paul Fortress, A Russian Folkloric Extravaganza and Peterhof, the Russian Versailles.
Day 1: Your coach brings you to the city center, the Spit of Vasilievsky Island, to enjoy the magnificent view of the Neva River and the Rostral Columns. This stop will give you a chance to take pictures of the Winter Palace and other buildings of the Hermitage Museum, as well as the St. Peter and Paul Fortress situated right across the river. The tour continues inside the fortress. Once inside the cathedral, admire the beauty of its marble columns, glittering chandeliers, and painted decor combined with carved and gilded iconostasis, create a magnificent setting for the tombs of the Romanov monarchs. After your guided tour of the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral and Fortress grounds, you'll continue on a drive along the embankments of the Neva River. A photo stop will be made at St. Isaac's Cathedral. Your tour ends at St. Isaac's Square, from where your coach will take you back to the pier.
Day 1 Evening: Later in the evening you'll be taken to the concert hall to enjoy a Russian Folkloric performance. Get acquainted with the fascinating songs and dances from the nations inhabiting Russia, and the republics of the former Soviet Union. You'll be offered Russian Champagne and mineral water. This evening will take you on a spiritual journey through different regions of Russia, with energetic dances of Don Cossacks and melodic Russian, Ukrainian and Gypsy songs including the world-famous Kalinka and Katyusha.
Day 2: Take a short drive to Peterhof, the town of palaces, fountains and parks, built by Peter the Great to rival Versailles. It lies on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland, 22 miles west of St. Petersburg. After a short walk from the parking lot you'll reach the main entrance of the Grand Palace. Built in the beginning of the 18th century, Peterhof is known as the most brilliant of all the summer residences of the Russian Tsars. The estate construction spanned two centuries, and upon its completion it encompassed seven parks and more than 20 smaller palaces and pavilions. Peter himself designed the layout of the 300 acre park and spectacular fountains.
Driving on SPB Tour Bus to The Peter and Paul Fortress in Saint Petersburg, Russia
The fortress contains several notable buildings clustered around the Peter and Paul Cathedral (1712--1733), which has a 122.5 m (402 ft) bell-tower (the tallest in the city centre) and a gilded angel-topped cupola.
The cathedral is the burial place of all Russian tsars from Peter I to Alexander III, with the exception of Peter II and Ivan VI. The remains of Nicholas II and his family and entourage were re-interred there, in the side St. Catherine's Chapel, on July 17, 1998, the 80th anniversary of their deaths. Toward the end of 2006, the remains of Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna were brought from Roskilde Cathedral outside Copenhagen and reinterred next to her husband, Alexander III.
The newer Grand Ducal Mausoleum (built in the Neo-Baroque style under Leon Benois's supervision in 1896-1908) is connected to the cathedral by a corridor. It was constructed in order to remove the remains of some of the non-reigning Romanovs from the cathedral, where there was scarcely any room for new burials. The mausoleum was expected to hold up to sixty tombs, but by the time of the Russian Revolution, there were thirteen. The latest burial was of Nicholas II's first cousin once removed, Grand Duke Vladimir Cyrilovich (1992). The remains of his parents, Grand Duke Cyril Vladimirovich and his wife Viktoria Fyodorovna, were transferred to the mausoleum from Coburg in 1995.
Other structures inside the fortress include the still functioning mint building [1] (constructed to Antonio Porta's designs under Emperor Paul), the Trubetskoy Bastion with its grim prison cells, and the city museum. According to a centuries-old tradition, a cannon is fired each noon from the Naryshkin Bastion. Annual celebrations of the city day (May 27) are normally centered on the island where the city was born.
The fortress walls overlook sandy beaches that have become among the most popular in St. Petersburg. In summer, the beach is often overcrowded, especially when a major sand festival takes place on the shore.

First Thoughts on Russia | We Spent 48 Hours in St Petersburg, Russia
After our insane Russian visa nightmare we are so glad to arrive here in St Petersburg...these are our first thoughts on the country.
Tour we are on in Russia with On the Go Tours:
We have 48 hours in St Petersburg so we are going to show you as much as possible to do in this incredible city which started off by working out the Metro systems...going to the deepest one in Russia - Admiralteyskaya station. It's so cost effective to use the Metro system, less than a $1 and there's no zones - jump on and just jump off when you are done.
Our first stop was obviously coffee, so we went to Pyshechnaya which is a cafe set up like an old soviet style restaurant where all they sell is cheap coffee and one style of donut.
Next up we headed to the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood which is a breathtaking church best described as a gingerbread house - and if you think outside looks stunning - wait till you go inside and see the 1000's of mosaics lining the walls.
To find the best views in St Petersburg we recommend you head to St Isaac's Cathedral.
If you are looking for some of the best museums in the world - head to the Hermitage Museum (the Winter Palace) and also head to Catherines Summer Palace - both very grand and opulent.
If you want to try some Russian food - we recommend Советское кафе Квартирка - which is an old soviet style restaurant set up like an old soviet home. Amazing food - we recommend you try
We Tried Russian Food in St Petersburg
- Vareniki (Potatoes & Mushroom dumpling)
- Cherry Vareniki
- Pirzhok Pie (cabbage and egg)
- Rasstegai Pie (fish)
- Napoleon Cake with Custard
- Ukrainian Cottage Cheese Pancake
and finally 2 end your 2 days in St Pettersburg - head on a river boat to see the best views around the city :)
