Saarbrücken is the capital and largest city of the state of Saarland, Germany. Saarbrücken is Saarland's administrative, commercial and cultural centre. he city is situated next to the French border at the heart of the metropolitan area of Saarland. Saarbrücken was created in 1909 by the merger of three towns, Saarbrücken, St. Johann, and Malstatt-Burbach. It used to be the industrial and transport centre of the Saar coal basin. Products included iron and steel, sugar, beer, pottery, optical instruments, machinery, and construction materials.
Historic landmarks in the city include the stone bridge across the Saar (1546), the Gothic church of St. Arnual, the 18th-century Saarbrücken Castle, and the old part of the town, the Sankt Johanner Markt (Market of St. Johann). Twice in the 20th century Saarbrücken was separated from Germany: in 1920–35 as capital of the Territory of the Saar Basin and in 1947–56 as capital of the Saar Protectorate.
Some of the closest cities are Trier, Luxembourg, Nancy, Metz, Kaiserslautern, Karlsruhe and Mannheim. Saarbrücken is connected by the city's public transport network to the town of Sarreguemines in France, and to the neighboring town of Völklingen, where the old steel works were the first industrial monument to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994 — the Völklinger Hütte. The city is served by Saarbrücken Airport (SCN), and since June 2007 ICE high speed train services along the LGV Est line provide high speed connections to Paris from Saarbrücken Hauptbahnhof. Saarbrücken's Saarbahn (modelled on the Karlsruhe model light rail) crosses the French–German border, connecting to the French city of Sarreguemines.

Saarbrücken, the capital of the German state Saarland, was originally not on our itinerary! We had planned a four weeks trip to Spain by train, but the strike of the train drivers union GDL forced us to arrive a day early in order to catch our Intercity to Paris.
So we take advantage of the opportunity to make a small tour through the downtown. We book a hotel opposite the Congress Hall, as it is just minutes from the train station. At the beginning of the pedestrian area the Bergwerksdirektion (mining directorate) stings us in the eye. The listed building houses the Europa Galerie, a shopping center, today. We walk through the pedestrian area and turn left to the town hall of St. John and St. John's Church.
Of course a visit to the St. Johanner Markt, a square with many nice cafes, bars and restaurants, should not be missed. The first warm spring day has driven people to the streets, so that everywhere there is lively bustle.
We reach the river Saar at the State Theater and cross the river. On the other side we leave the castle on your left and walk through the narrow streets of Old Saarbrücken. From the Wilhelm Heinrich bridge one has the best overview of the banks of the Saar, the harbor and the waterfront, which is called Berliner Promenade. In the distance, you can recognize the hospital of the Saarland on the Winterberg.
We end the evening in a nice restaurant with a typical dish of the region.

Saarbrücken stand eigentlich nicht auf unserem Reiseplan! Vier Wochen Spanien waren geplant, aber durch den Streik der Lokführer Gewerkschaft GDL waren wir gezwungen einen Tag früher anzureisen um unseren Intercity nach Paris zu erreichen.
So nutzen wir die Gelegenheit zu einem kleinen Rundgang durch die Innenstadt. Wir haben uns ein Hotel gegenüber der Kongresshalle genommen, da es nur wenige Minuten vom Bahnhof entfernt liegt. Am Anfang der Fußgängerzone sticht uns die Bergwerksdirektion ins Auge. Das unter Denkmalschutz stehende Gebäude beherbergt heute die Europa Galerie. Wir gehen durch die Fußgängerzone und biegen dann links ab zum Rathaus St. Johann und zur Johanneskirche.
Natürlich darf auch ein Besuch am St. Johanner Markt, mit vielen netten Cafes, Bars und Restaurants, nicht fehlen. Der erste warme Frühlingstag hat die Menschen auf die Straßen getrieben, so dass überall lebhaftes Treiben herrscht.
Wir erreichen die Saar beim Staatstheater und überqueren sie. Am anderen Ufer lassen wir das Schloss links liegen und gehen ein wenig durch die schmalen Gassen von Alt-Saarbrücken. Von der Wilhelm Heinrich Brücke aus hat man den besten Überblick über die Ufer der Saar, den Hafen und die Uferpromenade, die sich Berliner Promenade nennt. In der Ferne ist das Klinikum des Saarlandes auf dem Winterberg erkennbar.
Den Abend lassen wir in einem Restaurant mit Saarländischen Spezialitäten ausklingen.

A hair’s breadth from the French border in Southwestern Germany, Saarbrücken mixes industrial history with the splendour of the Counts and Princes of Nassau-Saarbrücken who ruled the region for centuries. Two people more than any left their mark on Saarbrücken, 18th-century Prince of Nassau-Saarbrücken, William Henry, and his architect Friedrich Joachim Stengel. For three decades the pair remodelled Saarbrücken into a Baroque city, building palaces, churches, squares and fountains.
One of most absorbing ensembles is Ludwigsplatz, where eight palaces face the sublime Ludwigskirche. Around Saarbrücken Castle there’s much to keep you occupied, as over the last two decades a system of tunnels and underground chambers has been excavated and opened as part of the Saar Historical Museum.
In the 1760s Friedrich Joachim Stengel was commissioned by William Henry, Prince of Nassau-Saarbrücken to build not just this church but the surrounding square as well, all as a single harmonious work. The result is one of the high points of German Baroque art, as well as one of Germany’s standout Protestant churches.
Stengel was also responsible for another stunning Baroque church built in the mid-1750s for the city’s growing catholic congregation. The church was partly funded by French King Louis XV and a collection was made in Rome by Pope Benedict XIV. Before you enter, you have to inspect the bronze doors, which show scenes from the life of St John the Baptist and were remade in 1986 by the local artist Ernst Alt after they were damaged in the war.
South of Saarbrücken and just a couple of kilometres from the border crossing at Goldene Bremm, the Deutsch-Französischer Garten is a park with a diplomatic past. The size of this museum beside Saarbrücken Castle is deceptive.
On ground level there’s a long narrow building from 1988 with a barrel roof, and this conceals a small world of historic underground chambers and tunnels that were excavated in the 1990s and 2000s. East of Saarbrücken a few kilometres down the Saar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Völklingen Ironworks was established in 1873 and shut down in 1986, and is the only smelting works built in the 19th century to have made it to the present.
Also mandatory on Schlossplatz is this museum in the former district administrative building on the south side of the square. One of three branches under the Saarlandmuseum umbrella, the Moderne Galerie is in a modern complex built in 1979 and made up of three interconnected pavilions. One head-turning landmark is the town hall, which is newer than it looks and has a Gothic Revival design from 1900. The facade is busy with traceried windows, pinnacles, and masses of other ornamentation.
Johanner Markt is decked with the dozens of stalls for the city’s main market. For the last 40 years the old centre of Saarbrücken has been a pedestrian zone, and this square in the middle somewhere to come and gauge daily life in the city. If you have time to spare you could take a walk up the Saar from the Saarbrücker Schloss to the district of Sankt Arnual, one of the oldest districts in the city.

Hi there! This is a quick vlog like video of my day in Saarbrücken, Germany. This city is on the boarder of France....like within 10 minutes of walking you've crossed the boarder! It serves as a major shopping hub for the area and also has a main train station connecting to other popular European cities. There's a lovely city center where you can find charming cafes, variety of restaurants, and multi weekly farmers markets.
My Favorite place is the beautiful park...as you can see on nice days like this everyone is outside soaking up the sun. I found a nice tree chill out under for an hour. The city also has many connecting bike paths, so it's perfect to take a relaxing ride.
I hope you enjoyed getting to see a taste of my neighborhood. I plan on doing more of these style videos as I visit more of my favorite European cities.

Toponymy
In modern German, Saarbrücken literally translates to Saar bridges (Brücken is the plural of Brücke), and indeed there are about a dozen bridges across the Saar river; however the name actually predates the oldest bridge in the historic center of Saarbrücken, the Alte Brücke, by at least 500 years.
The name Saar stems from the Celtic word sara (streaming water), and the Roman name of the river, saravus.
However, there are three theories about the origin of the second part of the name Saarbrücken.
Briga (rock)
The most popular theory states that the historical name of the town, Sarabrucca, derived from the Celtic word briga (hill, or rock, big stone), which became Brocken (can mean rock or boulder) in High German. The castle of Sarabrucca was located on a large rock by the name of Saarbrocken overlooking the river Saar.
Brucca (ford)
A minority opinion holds that the historical name of the town, Sarabrucca, derived from the Old High German word Brucca(German), meaning bridge – or more precisely a Corduroy road, which was also used in fords. Next to the castle, there was a ford allowing to cross the Saar.
Bruco (swamp)
A mostly rejected theory claims that the historical name of the town, Sarabrucca, derived from the Germanic word bruco (swamp, marsh). There is an area in St Johann called Bruchwiese (wiese meaning meadow), which used to be swampy prior to development, and there were flood-meadows along the river, and those are often marshy. However, the Saarbrücken area was first settled by Celts and not by Germanic peoples.

من معالمها الأثرية جسر حجري فوق نهر السار من القرن السادس عشر وكنيسة القديس أرنوال القوطية وقلعة ساربروكر (Saarbrücker Schloss) التي تعود إلى القرن الثامن عشر.
