Job Charnock can not be regarded as the founder anymore and we are very much happy and we feel that our Bengalis have got their honour back and that the pre-Job Charnock era which was in the darkness before has come into light. And, we all are very much happy indeed over the fact that the people of Calcutta, the people of Bengali culture who love their culture, have come out with the truth. And, the fact is that we were not founded by any British.

22. SOUNDBITE: (English) Professor Sushil Choudhury, Historian:
When Job Charnock died in January 1693, Calcutta was far cry from a city. It was more village. I can read out to you what you know the Fort William council was writing to London. They were writing I quote they, that means the British, were in the wide unsettled conditions at Sutanuti, 945 house, neither fortified house nor godown. So there was no trace, I mean he had no idea and no inclination at all to found a city. His main motive and main purpose was to secure a settlement for the British to trade, to start the trading factory.

27. SOUNDBITE: (English) Professor Sushil Choudhury , Historian:
Though Job Charnock cannot be said to be the founder of the city, but one should give him credit for choosing Calcutta or Sutanuti, as a site for the settlement of the English East India company. Because it was the strategic position of Sutanuti or later Calcutta that gave lot of advantages to the British.

STORYLINE:
The history of Calcutta, once the second capital of the British Empire in India, is currently being re-written.
A recent ruling by Calcutta High Court dictates that English trader Job Charnock, for years believed to be the founder of Calcutta, will no longer be credited with the city's birth.
The court also ruled that Charnock's arrival on the banks of Sutanuti village on August 24, 1690 will not continue to be observed as Calcutta's birthday.
But Calcutta has many reminders of its British colonial legacy, among them the Victoria Memorial, a white marble museum with an imposing statue of Queen Victoria.
Now the traditional story of Calcutta's birth has been officially discarded following a lawsuit by the aristocratic Sabarna Roy Choudhury family, who challenged in court the city's birthday and history.
Debarshi Roy Choudhury, a representative of the 35th generation of the Bengali family says the verdict has set right a historical wrong and there cannot be a fixed birthday for a city which has evolved over centuries.
He says his landlord ancestors had owned the three villages of Sutanuti, Kalikata and Gobindapur since 1608.
Charnock's son-in-law, Charles Iyer, signed the deal on the Company's behalf.

Sabarna Roy Choudhury Durgapuja
The Aatchala Bari was built by Laksmikanta Majumdar and Durga Puja started by him. Later he got the tirle “Roy Choudhury” by Raja Maan Singh. The puja is happening since 1610 in the ancestral home at Barisha. It is possibly the oldest organised festival in Kolkata. Today altogether eight Durga Pujas are being held in the family. Out of these, six are at Barisha (Aatchala, Baro Bari, Mejo Bari, Benaki Bari, Kalikingkar Bhawan and Majher Bari) while the seventh & eighth are at Nimta & Birati.
Amazing rituals and customs can be noticed during the 5 days of Durgapuja festival. The Durga idol is made in the household. One of the rituals of Sabarna Roy Choudhury Durga Puja is “Aakh Boli” – Sacrificing bunches of Sugarcane to Ma Durga. Other rituals include Non Vegetarian “Bhog” offering to the goddess and Kumari Puja. Once started with the “Shakta” trail, the puja now follows a “Tridhara Sangam” – The confluence of Vaishnava, Shaiba & Shakta customs.
