Sacajawea Heritage Days | Washington State Park
Sacajawea Heritage Days is a collaborative effort by the Friends of Sacajawea State Park Sagebrush Freetrappers Blackpowder Club & The Horse Heaven Historical Re-enactors. The heritage days take place at Sacajawea State Park, a 284-acre state park named after Sacajawea a Shoshone explorer, is situated where the Snake and Columbia rivers converge at Pasco, Washington.
The annual Sacajawea Heritage Days, which celebrates the anniversary of the 1805 Lewis and Clark Expedition, takes place every year during the Fall. The venue of the expedition is where Lewis and Clack got aquatinted with the local tribes at Sacajawea (Yakama, Wanapum and Umatilla) over 200 years ago.
Sacajawea Heritage Days recreates the early tribal days atmosphere. There are different camps and they represent numerous historic themes. Members of the local tribes attending the event to perform traditional music and dances accompany each camp. In addition, there are mountain men demonstrations to show various re-enactments (how food used to be prepared etc.) of the life and skills of early American settlers and explorers.
Overall, this educational event of Sacajawea Heritage Days in Washington State Park can be described as a fun filled experience where visitors can take a break from the modern day chaos and enjoy the relaxed traditional lifestyle.

Sacajawea Historical State Park
Imagine standing at a place where Native American people encountered the Lewis and Clark Expedition on its westward journey.
On Oct. 16, 1805, the Corps of Discovery arrived at the confluence of the Snake and Columbia rivers, the site of today's Sacajawea Historical State Park. They camped for two nights amidst a thriving community of Native American cultures.
As most Washingtonians know, a Shoshone woman named Sacagawea* was instrumental in the Expedition’s success. Not only did she work alongside the men, she was an interpreter and an emissary of peace between the white explorers and Native American tribes.
Central to the park named for her is the Sacajawea Interpretive Center. Open April 1 to Oct. 31, (call 509 545-2361 for hours), the museum features interactive exhibits on the Corps of Discovery, Sacagawea and the Sahaptian-speaking tribes of the region. Stroll the green, tree-shaded grounds, and read the seven story circle installations by internationally known artist Maya Lin.
Once you’ve absorbed this fascinating history, head for the beach. Depending on the season, hundreds of birds flock to these inland waters, and boaters enjoy the two rivers, while kids play on the lawns and parents relax.
As evening falls, stand on the riverside, and picture the area as it must have been in 1805. If you weren’t a Lewis and Clark buff before, you may find your curiosity piqued by this interesting park.

Carol Roberts's Interview
Carol Roberts moved to Hanford with her family in 1944 after her father was hired by DuPont to work as an electrician on the B Reactor. In this interview, she vividly describes life in Richland during the Manhattan Project. Roberts mentions local segregation, dust storms, the housing, social opportunities, and the challenges women faced in raising a family. Roberts champions the role of women in local history, including Leona Marshall Libby’s work on the B Reactor. She also details the founding of the local hospital and library, and recounts the takeoff of the “Day’s Pay,” the bomber funded by Hanford workers as part of their contributions to the war effort.
