The first lecture in this new series was centered on a great painting of the Yuan Dynasty, Wang Meng's Dwelling in the Qingbian Mts., the second to a recent artist, Cheng Shifa. For this third, we return to the Yuan dynasty to consider the works of another of the so-called Four Great Masters of Yuan landscape painting, Huang Gongwang. I had meant originally to concentrate again on a single work of his, Dwelling in the Fuchun Mts of 1347-1350; but when I assembled the images and looked at them, it became apparent that a lecture on most of the surviving works of this great artist would be more interesting and valuable. So that's what I'm attempting in the lecture that follows.

The first modern national university established in China, it was founded during the late Qing Dynasty in 1898 as the Imperial University of Peking and was the successor of the Guozijian, or Imperial College. US Prof: China Needs More Western Art (pt1/3)
Professor Donald Stone is an American expert on western art. For 30 years he's taught here at Peking University, helping to build up what he says may be the only permanent public collection of western art in China. It's a project close to the professor's heart as he believes China needs more exposure to classical culture from the west. While Professor Stone's leaving much of his personal art collection to Peking University in his will, he says much more needs to be done to educate Chinese about western culture. Dominic Swire caught up with Professor Stone at the university's Sackler Museum just days before the opening of his latest exhibition on 18th century European prints. They begin talking about the size of the current collection at the Sackler.
