Scenic Drive from Alamogordo to Cloudcroft New Mexico on Highway 82 with Fall Colors
I take the scenic drive from Alamogordo, where I shop, up Hwy 82 to Cloudcroft, then travel along Highway 130 dotted with Fall foliage. The terrain changes in the 16 mile ascent from desert to alpine, and from no hint of Fall in the desert to Fall colors at the mountain summit.
We gain 4,300 ft of elevation on this 16 mile ascent. Alamogordo is high desert at 4300 ft elevation. Cloudcroft is 8668 ft high, while Ski Cloudcroft tops at 9100 ft. As one ascends Highway 82, ones' ears pop, due to the air pressure decreasing the higher one climbs.
This drive is like traveling north a thousand miles in only sixteen. That's one of the advantages of Cloudcroft over living in northern areas. Here, if one wishes a drastic change of scene, warmer weather, desert sands, it's only 16 miles away. Quite unlike the years I lived in London, when I saw desert sand again only when we'd travel to Cairo or Jerusalem, 3000 miles away.
Cloudcroft is, literally, in the clouds on this day. Not unusual. Cloudcroft was named by a Scotsman working for the railroad company. Therefore, I include bag pipes and Scots music as we approach the Tunnel. I wish I could capture the splendid scent of Cloudcroft too. Clean, fresh, lovely.
I include music I like. In some portions, all along the drive, I include informational captions too. I don't know what kind of dash cam I'm using. It was one of the gadgets of the truck I recently bought. Had fun playing with it for the first time with this video.
Music includes:
Prince Igor Polovetsian Dances (Borodin), performed by MIT Symphony Orchestra. From the Free Music Archive.

Mesilla Park Could Make Register Of Historic Places
(LAS CRUCES) -- Mesilla Park has had its fair share of famous local residents over the years.
Fabian Garcia...R. W. Goddard...started the first radio station in New Mexico.
Dr. Jon Hunner, professor of history at NMSU, was recently at the Frank O'Brien Community Center watching graduate students present their finals.
I looked at houses that were as old...to 1940 or so.
NMSU graduate student David Mercer was one of those students.
There are some different architectural styles that are great.
There's not just one type of house...you might have an adobe next to a wooden frame house.
David and other students documented about 80 of the homes in Mesilla Park.
Las Cruces councilor Greg Smith lives in and represents the neighborhood...
He says the architecture is not the only thing here with variety.
Mesilla Park is an area that has diversity...wide range...people's professions and things that they do.
Some residents worry they will lose property rights if the neighborhood is designated historic...Smith says, that is only under certain circumstances.
There are those restrictions...not applied to every home in the district....only those seeking tax exemptions or if they're government-owned.
Others, he says, worry the neighborhood is not historic at all. That is nothing he's worried about.
You go, that is us...those things are happening here.
Dr. Hunner and the history department need to survey about 80 more homes before they can take the next steps.
Once we get that completed...complete the nomination, send it up...to Santa Fe...consideration for national registry.

Alamogordo, New Mexico
Alamogordo is the county seat and economic center of Otero County in south-central New Mexico, United States. A city in the Tularosa Basin of the Chihuahuan desert, it is bordered on the east by the Sacramento Mountains and to the west by White Sands National Monument. It is the city nearest to Holloman Air Force Base. The population was 30,403 as of the 2010 census. Alamogordo is known for its connection with the Trinity test, the first explosion of an atomic bomb, and also for the Atari video game burial of 1983.
Humans have lived in the Alamogordo area for at least 11,000 years. The present settlement, established in 1898 to support the construction of the El Paso and Northeastern Railroad, is an early example of a planned community. The city was incorporated in 1912. Tourism became an important economic factor with the creation of White Sands National Monument in 1934. During the 1950-60s, Alamogordo was an unofficial center for research on pilot safety and the developing United States' space program.

Dry 2 27 2016 Dry Canyon Alamogordo, NM (USA)
Robin and I needed thermals since the wind wasn't strong enough to soar the rim. Even though it is February southern New Mexico (USA) still has thermals as strong as 800'/min. (Lifting air taking up pilot and glider). We each had an hour and a quarter of air time.
Cowboys and the A&SM RR
To understand why the Apache Indians would allow railroads and logging on there reservation in the Sacramento mountains, the video looks back at the 1870s and the Lincoln county war between cattle ranchers. The Apache had the timber and wanted there own cattle herd. The video tells this story on my HO model railroad and involves cowboys and indians.
Vlog # 15, Oliver Lee Memorial State Park, NM
This park is about Oliver Lee Memorial State park located just outside of Alamogordo New Mexico. It was our first experience with the New Mexico state park system. There were some pretty great trails at this park, my favorite was the Dog Canyon trail which leads up through the wash of Dog Canyon. There is water present in the form of small waterfalls, pools and small streams cutting through rock. Great water-carved rocks and super views on some of the other trails. Outside the park, you'll find White Sands National Monument as well as The Historic SPace Museum And Hall Of Fame. There are remnants of a cabin within the park called Frenchy's Cabin. There is a very interesting story relating to this cabin, and Oliver Lee. Here is a pretty good site that goes into a little more detail about the history of Frenchy and Oliver Lee.
