Places to see in ( Andalusia - Spain ) Sacromonte
Places to see in ( Andalusia - Spain ) Sacromonte
Sacromonte is known as the gypsy quarter, drawing visitors to the hills above Granada for music and dancing after dark. Venues in hillside caves host dramatic flamenco shows along the narrow Camino de Sacromonte road. Sacromonte Caves Museum preserves houses built into the rock, and relics are displayed at Sacromonte Abbey, with sweeping views over the city. Hiking routes and bike trails lead off into the mountains.
Sacromonte, sometimes also called Sacramonte is a traditional neighbourhood of the eastern area of the city of Granada in Andalusia, Spain. It is one of the six neighbourhoods that make up the urban district Albayzín and limits with the neighbourhoods of Albayzín, San Pedro, Realejo-San Matías, El Fargue and Haza Grande. In 2009 had 578 inhabitants.
It is located on the hill and valley of Valparaíso, in front of the Alhambra, emblematic places of Granada, occupying both banks of the Darro River, whose name seems to derive the phrase D'auro (of gold) for its famous gold-bearing sediments.
It is the traditional neighborhood of the Granadian Gipsies, who settled in Granada after the Christian conquest of the city in 1492. It is one of the most picturesque neighborhoods of the city, by the landscape and its cave houses, installed in whitewashed caves.
The gypsies of Sacromonte have a dialect, Calé, which is currently little used. It's derived, according to tradition, from India, from where the gypsies (or Roma), originated. The Roma of Sacromonte were portrayed by the poet Federico García Lorca in his book of poems Romancero Gitano.

Granada, Spain - Genil River Paseo del Salón
The very large fountain Fuente de las Granadas dominates this area, located within the Plaza del Humilladero, adjacent to the Genil River (Rio Genil) in Granada, Spain. The immediate area next to the river is the Paseo del Salón Embarcadero. The striking Paseo de la Bomba is a beautiful walkway lined with street lamps on both sides. On the opposite side is the striking paseo Carrero de la Virgen which leads back into the old part of Granada. It is mainly residential, with a few shops and cafes, but the paseo is spacious and was full of people strolling while we were there.
As always Ed does the camcorder filming and narrations heard, while I did the still photos, chose the music, edited everything and uploaded to You Tube. The song heard during the slide show is Sunflower by Topher Mohr and Alex Elena; from the free You Tube Library of Songs.

¡Gracias chicas!
Spain Trip 2017 #7 Granada Cathedral and Royal Chapel
The Cathedral of Granada is the second largest church in Spain. It was begun in the early 1500’s, shortly after the Reconquista, when Granada was the capital of the new worldwide Spanish Empire. But the abundance of gold leaf on the altar is not from the new world -- it’s from the local Darro River which is what originally attracted the Romans to the area. Flanking the altar on either side are busts of Adam and Eve in the round niches, and below them, the kneeling monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, architects of the Reconquista and sponsors of the new empire. The statue of St James the Moor-Slayer is a vivid reminder that the Reconquista culminated here in Granada. On display are the giant music books used by medieval choirs with beautifully decorated sheets of 16th c. Gregorian chant. The adjoining Royal Chapel is the final resting place of Ferdinand and Isabella (photography is not permitted inside so the images are from the internet). The video ends with a series of still photos taken by my wife, Pam.
