The history of Sagaing dates back to the beginning of the 14th century when the royal city of Bagan fell and the city became the new capital of Burma. However, its importance as a centre of power was short-lived yet around fifty years later the newly founded Inwa became the capital of the Burmese Empire.More than seven hundred hilltop and valley monasteries have made Sagaing one of the world’s most important centres of Buddhism. The Pa Ba Kyaung Monastery is situated on Sagaing’s western hills and is surrounded by two elevations, a place of tranquillity and meditation. Peaceful and serene, the statues and Buddha images appear to stare into the very soul of all those who come here. It is not surprising that for nearly eight hundred years the region’s pagodas have attracted the faithful as well as tourists from around the world.

Sagaing (Burmese: စစ်ကိုင်းမြို့; MLCTS: cac kuing: mrui) is located the Irrawaddy River, 20 km to the south-west of Mandalay on the opposite bank of the river, Sagaing, with numerous Buddhist monasteries is an important religious and monastic centre. The pagodas and monasteries crowd the numerous hills along the ridge running parallel to the river. The central pagoda, Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda, is connected by a set of covered staircases that run up the 240 m hill. Today, with about 70,000 inhabitants, the city is part of Mandalay built-up area with more than 1,022,000 inhabitants estimated in 2011. The city is a frequent tourist destination of day trippers. Within the city are the Sagaing Institute of Education, the Sagaing Education College, Sagaing University, Technological University (Sagaing), and co-operative university (Sagaing)

Las pagodas de Sagaing Hill y Ava, la antigua capital de Myanmar o Birmania
Un día de aprendizaje. Fuimos a las afueras de Mandalay y encontramos lugares magníficos.
Primerollegamos a la colina de Sagaing en donde pudimos ver las innumerables pagodas además de una maravillosa vista de la ciudad. Sagaing Hill tiene una altura de 240 metros y es visible desde la lejanía, ya sea cruzando cualquiera de los puentes que unen Sagaing con Mandalay o bien en barco por el rio Ayeyarwady. Saging hill está formado por un total de 37 colinas.
La ciudad de Ava, también llamada Inwa fue la capital del antiguo imperio Birmano durante los siglos XIV al XIX. Asolada por las guerras, saqueada de sus riquezas y parcialmente destruida por los terremotos, Ava en la actualidad es un mero espejismo de aquella esplendorosa capital. Por su historia y su cercanía a otros lugares de interés como Sagaing, Amarapura o Mingun, Ava es una de las excursiones más populares por los alrededores de Mandalay

Touring Sagaing Hill / စစ်ကိုင်းမြို့ (Three Cities Tour)
Sagaing Hill / စစ်ကိုင်းမြို့ has numerous pagodas and monasteries crowding hills along a ridge running parallel to the Irrawaddy River. Sagaing was the capital of Sagaing Kingdom (1315–1364), one of the minor kingdoms that rose up after the fall of Pagan dynasty, where one of Thihathu's sons, Athinkhaya, established himself. During the Ava period (1364–1555), the city was the common fief of the crown prince or senior princes. The city briefly became the royal capital between 1760 and 1763 in the reign of King Naungdawgyi.
The Soon Oo Ponya Shin Pagoda / ဆွမ်းဦးပုညရှင်ဘုရား is located on the top of the Sagaing Hill and is one of the hill's oldest temples. The pagoda is connected by a set of covered staircases that run up the 240 meter hill.
U Min Thonze Caves or literally '30 Caves' is famed for its crescent-shaped colonnade of 45 Buddha images.
