Cruising Through History, A 3-State Tour From Watch Hill
This timeless trip begins with a classic ride.
The car is a 1913 Model T, says Captain Jack Spratt, as he greets his guests at Rhode Island's famed Ocean House.
His old Ford takes folks on a scenic drive through Watch Hill, but that's not all. At the cove, they board a restored yacht called Encore and head out for a sightseeing tour that's both historic and gorgeous.
It's a very interesting area, a beautiful area. I'm particularly interested in the history, Colonial history, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, says this seasoned sailor who donates all proceeds of the charters to the Mystic Seaport.

How to Raise and Lower a Boat Bimini Top | BoatUS
BoatUS Magazine's Lenny Rudow shows you how to put up/open and stow/close/lower a bimini top for boats. If you get caught in an unexpected squall while out for the day on the water, you'll want to know how to raise or open your bimini top -- and fast! Likewise, once the rain has stopped or before towing your boat home for the night, you'll also need to know how to stow it. Lenny takes you through the steps needed to raise and lower this accessory that can double as your boat's sun shade. Your own boat's bimini top might be a little different, but you'll get the basic idea. We recommend going through the process on your own boat a few times before you need to. Do make sure to put your bimini down or lower your boat bimini before towing as it is not made to withstand the buffeting winds. And also ensure it's dry before storing to avoid mold and mildew from forming.

20130901; Algonac, Big Mac, and Michigan's U. P.
Part of our 6,300 mile trip around the USA beginning on the 5th of August and ending on the 27th of September included a much longed-after trip back to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, otherwise known as The U. P. Having been born in the U. P., one seems to retain a calling to go back there if one ever move's away in the first place! Maybe it's the pasties?
This trip begins early in the morning on the 1st of September after breaking camp at White's Haven RV Campgrounds located in Western PA's Cook Forest, having waited out the Labor Day crowds for about a week to continue our trip. We wakened to a thick fog that morning, experiencing more than enough excitement as three deer ran out of the forest and onto the road in front of our car as we traveled west towards Algonac, MI...our next stop. We managed to finally slow down enough to allow them to outpace us and run back into the woods to safety!
We arrived at Algonac, MI around 9.5 hours later, which features a State Park RV campground...extremely well-kept, a beautiful place to stay with clean facilities. It sits alongside the St. Claire River, which provides views of boats and ships plying the waters between Lake Huron and Lake St. Claire. We visited George's sister, her children and their children. Fun times and a welcomed break from traveling. We spent 3 days at Algonac, then traveled to Wroxeter, Ontario, Canada on the 3rd of September looking for relatives...or at least their birthplaces.
We returned from Canada to Algonac, MI on the 6th of September, more visiting, then left for the 5-mile long Big Mac bridge connecting lower Michigan at Mackinaw City to the Upper Peninsula at St. Ignace. It had been almost 50 years since I'd traveled across the bridge towards Manistique, Prior visits were made coming in from the west along U.S.2. The bridge is still impressive...but not as much fun as it was to take the auto ferry from Mackinaw City/Cheboygan to St. Ignace prior to the bridge being built! We've recorded the radio message extolling the virtues of the U. P. and the bridge's very being for you to listen to as we cross the bridge.
Traveling west on U. S. 2 to Manistique and the Indian Lake Resort was exciting, especially when we saw our first pasty shop...so exciting we forgot to turn in and try one out! Listening to the radio along the way provided local color, and we knew we were back in the U. P.
Manistique, George's hometown, had grown in size and now includes most all of the national chain restaurants. The folks are great...just as advertised on the radio! We visited Treasure City...a must for any souvenir hunters, visited an old Inland Lime & Stone quarry engine, spotted a few more deer on the road to our campsite, found some long lost relatives as well as some that weren't lost! And also very important, found a great dog groomer in Manistique where our two pooches were able to finally get a bath and a badly needed trim!
We found grandpa Ottosen's old lighthouse residence at 825 Range St. in Manistique. He was the head lighthouse keeper from around 1920-1940 when he finally retired. A visit to Marina Drive brought us to a view of the East Breakwater Lighthouse...that years ago provided the eerie two-toned sound of a fog horn during appropriate weather. Always nice to fall asleep listening to that strange sound! Finding the homes where George and his friends lived while growing up there in the '40s and early '50s provided a nostalgic twang to the trip.
And so...we hope you enjoy this trip to the U.P. as much as we did! Will share this video with the Colorado Yooper's group!
George

DAILY VAN LIFE ROUTINE IN MEXICO
Today's van life vlog takes place in Baja California Sur where we wake in our self converted Sprinter Van in Los Barriles and take you along for a day in the life! Having been here for the last 6 days, we've established a little bit of a van life routine: where we fill up our water, where we go grocery shopping and how we find free beachfront camping!!
We have loved living in a van (self converted sprinter van) for the last year and a half and while we enjoy spending time in Canada it can get a little cold throughout the winter. So, we've decided to hit the road and drive across the continent to enjoy some warmer weather in Baja Mexico. If our last trip to this country taught us anything... it's to expect the unexpected!!
The Traveling Van Life in Mexico; hot, sticky, but oh so much fun!

More about Heart of Darkness:
Heart of Darkness is a novella written by Joseph Conrad. Before its 1903 publication, it appeared as a three-part series (1899) in Blackwood's Magazine. It was classified by the Modern Library website editors as one of the 100 best novels and part of the Western canon. The story centres on Charles Marlow, who narrates most of the book. He is an Englishman who takes a foreign assignment from a Belgian trading company as a river-boat captain in Africa. Heart of Darkness exposes the dark side of European colonization while exploring the three levels of darkness that the protagonist, Marlow, encounters: the darkness of the Congo wilderness, the darkness of the Europeans' cruel treatment of the African natives, and the unfathomable darkness within every human being for committing heinous acts of evil. Although Conrad does not give the name of the river, at the time of writing the Congo Free State, the location of the large and important Congo River, was a private colony of Belgium's King Leopold II. In the story, Marlow is employed to transport ivory downriver. However, his more pressing assignment is to return Kurtz, another ivory trader, to civilization, in a cover-up. Kurtz has a reputation throughout the region. (Summary adapted from from Wikipedia.org)

HEART OF DARKNESS
By Joseph Conrad
I
The Nellie, a cruising yawl, swung to her anchor without a flutter of
the sails, and was at rest. The flood had made, the wind was nearly
calm, and being bound down the river, the only thing for it was to come
to and wait for the turn of the tide.
The sea-reach of the Thames stretched before us like the beginning of
an interminable waterway. In the offing the sea and the sky were welded
together without a joint, and in the luminous space the tanned sails
of the barges drifting up with the tide seemed to stand still in red
clusters of canvas sharply peaked, with gleams of varnished sprits. A
haze rested on the low shores that ran out to sea in vanishing flatness.
The air was dark above Gravesend, and farther back still seemed
condensed into a mournful gloom, brooding motionless over the biggest,
and the greatest, town on earth.
The Director of Companies was our captain and our host. We four
affectionately watched his back as he stood in the bows looking to
seaward. On the whole river there was nothing that looked half so
nautical. He resembled a pilot, which to a seaman is trustworthiness
personified. It was difficult to realize his work was not out there in
the luminous estuary, but behind him, within the brooding gloom.

Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
This is the extraordinary tale of a boy, Jim Hawkins, who comes into possession of Captain Flint's treasure map, after a buccaneer takes a room at his inn and later dies. The map spreads its ill luck to all who know of it. A local squire outfits a ship to voyage to the Treasure Island, unearth the treasure, and bring it home. Little does he suspect that the man he has hired aboard as cook was formerly Flint's quartermaster, who then connives to hire many of his old mates. Once ashore, pirates being pirates, what follows is a mutiny. Jim and a handful of honest men find themselves harried and hunted by the rest of the crew. The pirate treasure, amassed by so much blood and death, is about to reach out and claim more victims!

In the meantime, Carter's friend Xodar has become the new Jeddak (chief or king) of the black Martian First Born, and those white Martian therns who reject the old religion likewise gain a new unnamed leader, but there are still some who wish to keep the old discredited religion going.
