Counter-reformation in Denmark
Also in Denmark, the Christians fought against the heretic Lutherans in 1536.
This is the true story about a Lutheran priest, that was killed by the faithful Catholics in 1536, because he did blasphemy against Virgin Mary.
Copenhagen - Vor Frue Kirke - Church of Our Lady or the Cathedral of Copenhagen
As seen through the lenses of my old HP Pocket Cam, iPhone and iPad Mini!
Rebuilt several times on the ruins of the 12th century's Catholic church that burnt down in the 14th C, then made the church of both the Catholics and Lutherans in the 16th. C, then struck twice by lightning, and damaged by fire in the 18th. C, then bombarded down by the British Navy during the Napoleonic wars.
It is the architect Christian Frederik Hansen who, if my memory serves me right, also designed some of the finest buildings in Athens, of the then newly independent Greece, (or was it his brother?) who designed the present building in Copenhagen in the neo classical style, a style that adorns many other buildings in Copenhagen from that period, e.g. the Copenhagen Court of Justice, and many others.
The internationally famed danish sculptor, Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770 - 1844) who spent most of his adult life in Italy, some of whose work can be seen among others at the Vatican, and who recently returned home, was commissioned to carve the sculptures of Jesus and the Apostles.
The Church was inaugurated in the spring of 1829!
The tower is 60m high, has 4 bells ranging each from 4 to 6 tons, one of which dates back to the 14th C.
The present organ/s replaces (or adds to the older ones), and dates from the turn of this century.
The funerals of both B. Thorvaldsen as well as those of Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kirkegaard were held at their time in this church.
On a personal note, I love assisting regularly to the gospel choirs and song programs that take place here. I almost never, well almost never, miss Händel's Messiah, at Xmas time. A sure delight!
Before entering the Church, and after leaving it, I make a tour around the building, show among others the old building of Copenhagen's University from the 15th. C, and some of the other buildings that surround it.
Enjoy your visit!

The Catholic cathedral in Stockholm
The Cathedral as it is today was consecrated on the 25'th of march in 1983. It was a big and happy day for the diocese, which means all catholic parishes with about 120 000 members.
The architect was Hans Westman with his daughter Ylva Lenormand from the Westman-studios in the city Malmö. Hans Westman has drawed two other catholic buildings in Sweden; Our saviours church in Malmö and the Carmelite cloister in Glumslöv. Hans westman got aquintance with catholic church buildings already in his childhood; his father was a vicar in the swedish church, active in some of the medieval churches in Uppland.
The cathedrals foremost patron saint is Eric the holy, King and martyr. Other patron saints are the apostles Petrus and Paulus.
Windows: One window shows the handover of the keypower combined with the handover of the shepherdmission to Petrus with a lower motif with Jesus as the good shepherd.
Crucifix: Early renaissance original, which was donated to the concecration of the church by the catholic archdiocese of München.
Tabernacle: Where Christ's body is stored.
Highaltar: Under the highaltar a relicshrine was placed with relics of the holy Eric, the holy Ansgar, Bartolomeus and the beatified Elisabeth Hesselblad.
Pietá: The sculpture represents the Virgin Mary with the dead Christ in her arms, it is a work by a french master and has its place in a niche in the new church wall.
