Saint Arnold Brewing Company Interview at the GABF
As part of our continuing coverage of the 2014 Great American Beer Festival we wanted to take a minute, three actually, to let you get to know one of the participants. The Saint Arnold Brewing Company is a Houston, Tx. based brewery and the oldest craft brewery in the state, brewing quality craft beers since 1994.
One of the things you quickly learn hiking through the #GABF is that players come to play, and the end-cap is the player's playground. Some of the bigger, more well known, craft-breweries have big and amazing looking bars basically setup. There was one, however, that made you stop to do a quick double-take to make sure you were seeing things right. Couples lined up outside a makeshift church exchanging vows under the watchful guise of Saint Arnold himself. The double-award winning brewery not only brought some stellar brews for everyone to try, but also a fun attitude and a desire to get the word out regarding Texas beer and Saint Arnold's place in it.
Be sure to Follow Saint Arnold on Twitter and Facebook too, as they have a great online and social presence. This is definitely a place on WLD's visit list when we make it down to the Lone Star State..
Saint Arnold Fancy Lawnmower Beer The Spit or Swallow Beer Review
Shagdog & Jammer cutting some grass with the patron saint of beer, Saint Arnold and their Lawnmower Beer.
Brewed by: Saint Arnold Brewing Company Texas, United States
A true German-style Kölsch. Originally brewed in Cologne, this beer is crisp & refreshing, yet has a sweet malty body that is balanced by a complex, citrus hop character. Multiple additions of German Hallertauer hops are used to achieve this delicate flavor. We use a special Kölsch yeast, an ale yeast that ferments at lager temperatures, to yield the slightly fruity, clean flavor of this beer. Fancy Lawnmower Beer is a world class brew yet light enough to be enjoyed by Texans after strenuous activities, like mowing the lawn.

Debuted August 2000. We developed this beer because we wanted a slightly delicate beer in our portfolio, and one with a crisper, hoppier character than the Texas Wheat. We settled on Kölsch for the style.
When it came to naming the beer, we performed our typical expensive, highly sophisticated consumer research program. We made a sheet of paper with five potential beer names on it: Select, Blonde, Kölsch, Golden and Fancy Lawnmower Beer. We then went around to any parties or bars we were at and handed out these sheets to have people rate their perception of the quality of the beer with each name on a scale of 1 to 5. If we just averaged the totals, Golden would have won. People rated Fancy Lawnmower Beer either a 1 or a 5, but all anyone wanted to talk about, no matter what they rated it, when they handed their questionnaire in was Fancy Lawnmower Beer.
This beer has a distinctive floral hop aroma. This, combined with the power of suggestion leads many people to inform us that this beer tastes like grass. No it doesn't, silly. And stop smoking so much of it.
Research has also found this beer to be perfect for tailgating at Texans game. Especially on those crisp, fall days at the beginning of the football season in August. In Houston. In a paved parking lot.

Saint Arnold Brewing Co. Santo Black Kölsch Beer Review
Thanks for joining us again ladies and gentlemen - welcome to the TTT! This time around we've got the third and final brew that was brought back from Houston, TX during a recent trip - this is the Saint Arnold Brewing Co. Santo, a black kölsch in style which comes in at 4.7% ABV. The description on the website reads:
Santo is a black Kölsch, which technically doesn’t exist as a style, but this is as close as we can come to describing it. Essentially it is brewed using a Kölsch recipe with the addition of Munich and black malt. It is light bodied and floral yet with a distinct dark malt flavor. Our goal was to create a dark yet refreshing beer that would pair perfectly with a plate of enchiladas.
The label artwork is by Houston artist Carlos Hernandez who is known for his Day of the Dead Rock Star series of paintings and prints.
Original Gravity: 1.045 (11.4° Plato)
Color: Dark
Bitterness: 17 IBU
Alcohol Content: By weight - 3.7%; By volume - 4.7%
Malted Barley:
This beer is brewed with a combination of pale 2 row, pils and Munich malted barley along with a small amount of black malt. We import the world's best pils malt to create the light yet rich malt body.
Hops:
We use a single hop variety in this beer: Hallertauer Hersbrucker. Four separate additions to the brew kettle create the delicate flavor and aroma of this classic hop.
Yeast:
We use our traditional Kölsch yeast in this beer, fermented on the cooler side.

Event Info:
Jun 09, 2010 -- HOUSTON -- Saint Arnold Brewing Company, the oldest craft brewery in Texas, will celebrate the 16th anniversary of the delivery of its first keg this weekend, joined by its loyal customers at the brewery on the northern edge of downtown Houston. The event will feature the third annual Saint Arnold Olympics, which pits eight 2-person teams against each other in three fun contests.
The past year, during which brewing operation moved to a new brewery in a historic building near the city's business center, has recalled much about the start-up of 16 years ago as Saint Arnold commissioned its new brewery.
Building the new brewery took more work, more money and a lot more time than building our original brewery 16 years ago, said founder and brewer Brock Wagner. Anniversaries like this make you appreciate all the hard work our crew has put in and the loyal support of our many customers that has made all of this possible.
The anniversary celebration will be at Saint Arnold's brewery at 2000 Lyons Avenue in Houston on Sunday, June 13.The big event of the day will be the third annual Saint Arnold Olympics. Eight 2-person teams will compete in three events: the deceptively difficult Keg Roll through an obstacle course, the crowd pleasing 2-story Beer Pour and a lightning round of Beer Pong, each of which offers great photo opportunities.
Since we began brewing in 1994, our community has been here to help and encourage us every step of the way, Wagner said. Historically breweries have been community oriented businesses and this is our way of recognizing and celebrating that bond.
The Saint Arnold Sweet 16 Brewery Party begins at 1:00 p.m. on June 13. Admission is $36, which includes a barbecue lunch and a commemorative pint glass. Register online.

1 The Pit Room Houston, Tx #TXBBQPASSPORT
In June of 2017 Texas Monthly issued their list of the Top 50 Best BBQ Joints. Stating that we had entered the Golden Age of Texas BBQ. My friends and I decided that we wanted to take that challenge and experience some of the best BBQ that Texas had to offer. We're not food critics, just a couple of BBQ fanboys documenting our journey around Texas.
We started off with local restaurants that had made a list. Since no one in the group of us had ever dined at the newcomer The Pit Room we decided to put them first on the list.
We ate at The Pit Room on a Tuesday morning at 11 am right after they had opened. We had no trouble parking, ordering or finding a place to sit. We opted to sit outside because it was a less humid day and almost lovely summer weather.
Located in Montrose, The Pit Room opened in 2016. Co-Pitmasters Michael Sambrooks and Bramwell Tripp (whose name you might recognize from other Houston restaurants like Revival Market and Coltivare) smoke up delicious wood-cooked barbecue daily. When you walk into the restaurant, it feels like a Texas BBQ joint. The tables and booth seating around them are all wood. The tables are light and the benches a darker shade all part of the rustic decor of the restaurant. There is also bar seating in the front of the restaurant and tables available at the venue next door (now called The Patio, the bar formerly known as Jackson's Watering Hole). The serving line runs in an L-shape perpendicularly across the restaurant. When you reach the front of the line, you can see the BBQ items like chicken and sausage hanging under heat lamps waiting to be cut fresh for your meal. The whole area smells of BBQ from blocks away.
The Pit Room offer a wide variety of your typical BBQ meat selections to choose from including brisket, ribs (both beef and pork), turkey, chicken, pulled pork, and three kinds of sausage: beef (Czech style), pork (with jalapeno and cheddar), and finally venison (seasoned with black pepper and garlic).
I was a little overwhelmed with all of the options, and it took me a minute to figure out what I wanted. I knew that I was there for the BBQ, so I skipped over the tacos and chili and went straight for the meats. There was no doubt that I was going to have my two go-to choices BBQ and Ribs, but the third option perplexed me for a minute. I opted to go with the venison sausage. Daniel Vaughn from TexasMonthly had an interesting perspective when talking about the sausage saying that they force you to buy a whole link, so it's hard to sample but I was unaware that there was another way to eat sausage.
Then you get to choose sides. I had the Mac&Cheese which was creamy and delicious and the elote (Mexican corn on the cob). The elote that on my tray was underdone and could have used a couple of extra minutes cooking. When you reach the cashier, there are several Texas breweries to choose from on draft, with an even larger selection of cans and bottles. They are currently featuring Karbach, 512, Shiner, Brash, Lone Star, Buffalo Bayou Brewing, Saint Arnolds, Real Ale, No Label, and Southern Star. There is also wine available by glass or bottle. They also have soda, fresh lemonade, and cold brew coffee available in the sidebar. Accompanying the drinks is a wide variety of bar-b-q fixins. They've got onions (fresh white and red pickled), Taqueria style carrots, jalapenos (fresh and pickled). Five different kinds of sauces including a coffee bourbon that was an interesting mix with the ribs and a yellow mustard that was spicy and delicious when paired with the sausage. There was also a California Reaper Hot Sauce which was labeled as Stupid Hot so on this trip I left it alone. I was already worried about the gastrointestinal distress that was going to wreak havoc with the mixture of BBQ and Cold Brew Coffee.
We sampled the pies and were pleased with both. The cherry pie was the winner on every front though. It featured sour cherries, with a very light, tart, filling and a small crumble crust. I would have ordered the pie a la mode, but that is just a personal preference, and it stands on its own without the ice cream.
When we left about an hour and a half later, the line was already out the door as the lunch crowd from the surrounding offices were coming in. When we return for another visit, I plan on sampling the tacos and having one of the giant beef ribs, and finishing with the bananas foster ice cream cookie sandwiches. There was just simply no room left at the inn this time around.
