Russia: Putin visits the relics of St. Nicholas in the Christ the Saviour Cathedral
Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour to see the relics of Saint Nicholas, in Moscow, on Wednesday, which were brought to Russia from Italy on May 21.
President’s visit was brief, he kissed the relics and lit a candle, then left the Cathedral.
Thousands of believers queued up to see the relics of one of the Russian Orthodox Church's most important figures.
Believers will be able to visit the remains of Saint Nicholas from May 22 till July 12 in Moscow and from July 13 till July 28 in Saint-Petersburg.
The agreement to bring the relics to Russian was brokered by Pope Francis and Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill during their historic meeting in Havana, in February this year.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is attending an overnight Orthodox Christmas service at the Transfiguration Cathedral in Saint Petersburg.
Putin attended the Christmas service at the Transfiguration Cathedral in Russia’s second largest city in 2012, when he held the post of the Russian prime minister. He told journalists at that time that he was Christianized at this Cathedral in his childhood.
As a rule Putin leaves Moscow for Christmas, while on Easter he stays in the Russian capital for a night-time service at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
Last year Putin went to the Christmas service at the Church of Saints Simeon and Anna in Saint Petersburg. In 2017 he attended the Christmas service at the Spassky (St. Savior) Cathedral of the St. George’s Monastery in the city of Veliky Novgorod. In 2016 went for the service at a rural Church near Voronezh. Before that he twice attended Christmas services in Sochi.
The president attended the service with other worshippers for half an hour, briefly spoke with Dean Nikolai Bryndin and presented him and the Cathedral with the icon of Christ Pantocrator as a Christmas gift. Bryndin in turn also presented the Russian president with a Christmas gift.
Orthodox Christians in Russia and other countries around the world are celebrating Christmas on January 7, an event which 2018 years ago marked the beginning of the new history of mankind.
Christians conclude a four-week fast during which they confess their sins and receive communion. And on Christmas Eve they have special fasting, until the first star, in memory of how the Magi came first to the birthplace of Christ following the movement of the star in the sky. At present, a candle in front of the altar, which is lit at the end of the Christmas Eve service at about noon, symbolizes the star.

Church services have taken place across Russia to mark Orthodox Christmas.
More than 6,000 people gathered to see Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia lead the service at Christ the Savior Cathedral in the Russian capital.
The liturgy was attended by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and his wife. Medvedev and Patriarch Kirill exchanged holiday greetings at the altar.

As Russia celebrates Orthodox Christmas, the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Kirill, has delivered his traditional address to believers. He said he prays for peace in Ukraine above all.
As millions of worshippers across Russia gathered for Christmas night liturgies on January 6, Patriarch Kirill addressed the Orthodox community with words of peace, paying special attention to the conflict in Ukraine.
“On these holy Christmas days, the prayers of the whole Church and my augmented litany are for peace on the Ukrainian soil,” Kirill said in his address.
He added that “regardless of the place of residence of its children, their political views or preferences,” the Russian Orthodox Church is doing everything possible to bring people together to help them overcome the consequences of conflicts.
Patriarch Kirill mentioned that 2015 is the year in which the Orthodox Church celebrates 1,000 years since the death of Vladimir the Great, the ruler who baptized Kievan Rus’ in the 9th century.
He pointed out that Ukrainians and Russians are bound by centuries-old spiritual and cultural ties which cannot be broken by any “external forces.” Orthodox Christianity remains the main religion of Ukraine.
The Russian president remained faithful to the tradition of celebrating Orthodox Christmas in small churches.
On the night of January 7, Vladimir Putin took part in the Christmas service at the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin in the village of Otradnoye, near the southern city of Voronezh, some 600 kilometers from Moscow.
Parishioners this year, along with local residents, were the children from the orphanage at the Church.
The place of worship, which is included in the list of cultural heritage sites, can accommodate up to 450 members. It was built in 1901 but after 29 years of service, was closed, so the building was used as a granary. Work to restore the cathedral began in 1991 and was finished in the early 2000s.
The Orthodox Church follows the Julian Calendar, which is 13 days behind the Gregorian Calendar adopted by the Catholic Church. Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on January 7. -RT.

Acting Russian President Vladimir Putin attended a special Christmas mass led by Alexei II, head of the Russian Orthodox church on Friday.
Putin acknowledged the importance of respecting the various faiths and their festivities but, he explained, there is no change in Russia's goals and plans for Grozny.
Continuing the special mood of religious festivities that has coincided between the Russian Orthodox Church's Christmas and Islam's end to Ramadan and the Eid festivity, a special Christmas mass was held in Christ the Saviour Cathedral on Friday.
Alexei II, the Russian Orthodox Church leader offered a special mass upon his return from Jerusalem to which many attended.
The Orthodox church traditionally celebrates two weeks after the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches.
In what has now become a public holiday in post-communist Russia, even the Acting President, Vladimir Putin, attended mass.
Putin, like everyone at the ceremony, made the sign of the cross and listened to the choir - perhaps a moment of reflection, as Russia's military postponed its attacks on Grozny on Friday.

When it comes to Grozny (stopping military actions there), we have to remember what time of the year it is. First of all for Orthodox Christians and tomorrow for Muslims. We should not forget about that. We have to respect believers.

But Putin added that the ceasefire is temporary and commented on the alleged use of chemical weapons.

Our military actions are dictated by care for civilians. Besides that, nothing has changed. As you know, care for civilians has always been one of the main elements in our tactics. This is the only explanation. Our goals remain the same, and they will be achieved.
