Key West, a U.S. island city, is part of the Florida Keys archipelago. It's also Florida's southernmost point, lying roughly 90 miles north of Cuba. Famed for its pastel-hued, conch-style houses, it’s a cruise-ship stop also accessible from the mainland via the Overseas Highway. It’s known more for its coral reefs – destinations for diving and snorkeling – than for its beaches.
Key West is the far frontier, edgier and more eccentric than the other keys, and also far more captivating. At its heart, this 7-sq-mile island feels like a beautiful tropical oasis, where the moonflowers bloom at night and the classical Caribbean homes are so sad and romantic it’s hard not to sigh at them.
While it has obvious allure, it's not without its contradictions. On one side of the road, there are literary festivals, Caribbean villas, tropical dining rooms and expensive art galleries. On the other, an S&M fetishist parade, frat boys passing out on the sidewalk and grizzly bars filled with bearded burnouts. With all that in mind, it's easy to find your groove in this setting, no matter where your interests lie. As in other parts of the Keys, nature plays a starring role here, with some breathtaking sunsets – cause for nightly celebration down on Mallory Sq.
The earliest Key West neighborhoods, on the western part of the island, are broadly known as Old Town. The Key West Historic District includes the major tourist destinations of the island, including Mallory Square, Duval Street, the Truman Annex and Fort Zachary Taylor. Old Town is where the classic bungalows and guest mansions are found. Bahama Village, southwest of Whitehead Street, features houses, churches, and sites related to its Afro-Bahamian history. The Meadows, lying northeast of the White Street Gallery District, is exclusively residential.
Key West, the southernmost point in the United States, is famous for watersports, lively nightlife, beaches, historic sites and its pastel, conch-style architechture. Duval Street, one of the most energetic strips of shops, bars and cafes anywhere, offers Sloppy Joe’s bar, a favorite Key West hangout of novelist Ernest Hemingway. And, for the more sober-minded, there's Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum.

STORYLINE:
Hurricane Wilma was headed toward Florida on Sunday and expected to increase in intensity.
Thousands of residents had already left the area after being ordered to evacuate.
The southern half of Florida's peninsula was under a hurricane warning on Sunday in anticipation of Wilma, a Category 2 storm with 160 kilometres per hour (100 miles per hour) sustained wind.
Although still far from the state, Wilma's outer bands of rain had already caused street flooding in South Florida.
Tropical storm-force winds were expected to begin lashing the state late on Sunday and meteorologists said the heart of the storm was expected to roar across the state on Monday.
Streets of the resort island of Key West in the gulf of Mexico, were virtually deserted as most people heeded the warnings and have left the area.
At the St. Mary of the Sea church on the island, nearly 100 faithful gathered for Sunday morning mass.
St. Mary of the Sea church is associated with the Lourdes Grotto, where for over 80 years the faithful have come to pray for relief from disasters, personal tragedy and spiritual fulfilment.
On Sunday, the grotto witnessed several prayers for deliverance from the impending hurricane.
Tropical storm-force winds of at least 63 kilometres per hour (39 miles per hour) were expected in the Keys and the southwestern part of the state by Sunday evening, and in Miami and other Atlantic coast cities around midnight.
The centre of Wilma should make landfall on Florida's southwest coast as a Category 1 or 2 hurricane around sunrise on Monday, forecasters said.

Thousands of residents have left the resort island of Key West in Florida after being ordered to evacuate, as Hurricane Wilma hurtled towards the state on Sunday.
The southern half of Florida's peninsula was under a hurricane warning on Sunday in anticipation of the Category 2 storm.
Emergency officials prepared rescue and relief plans as Hurricane Wilma started picking up speed like a rocket on a course toward Florida, moving at 160 kilometres per hour (100 miles per hour) at 1800 GMT.
Streets of the resort island of Key West in the gulf of Mexico, were virtually deserted as most people heeded the warnings and left the area.

The grotto - meant to resemble its namesake in France - was built by a nun in 1922 to honour the hundreds who died when a nameless Category 4 storm devastated the area in 1919.
On Sunday, the grotto witnessed several prayers for deliverance from the impending hurricane and many lit candles in front of the Virgin Mary's statue.
About 160-thousand people in the state were under mandatory evacuation orders, including the entire population of the Florida Keys island chain, according to officials and Census data.
A hospital in the island city was also evacuated on Saturday.

STORYLINE
It was an agonising wait on Friday for Floridians waiting to see what turn Hurricane Wilma would take.
Though most of the tourists fled the Florida Keys, many residents of the island chain weren't in a hurry to evacuate.
Some, like the director of the Wildlife Rescue of Florida Keys, planned to stay to help out wildlife injured in the event of Hurricane Wilma hitting the tip of the island chain south of the mainland.
We usually get a big onslaught of injured birds, sea birds. So we will be staying in town to take care of the animals, Janet Matheny told APTN.
While many stores in the main part of Key West boarded up, some remained open for business.
In one coffee shop, patrons enjoyed coffee while talking about how the US media had overblown the significance of the storm.
Reporters and television crews from around the country descended on the region in advance of the hurricane's winds and rain.
Meanwhile, devout Catholics in Key West believed their faith would protect the area from any storm damage.
Cuban-American Martha Mendoza on Friday lit a candle in the Lourdes Grotto in the grounds of the St Mary Star of the Sea church.
The grotto - meant to resemble its namesake in France - was built by a nun in 1922 to honour the hundreds who died when a nameless Category 4 storm devastated the area in 1919.
Mendoza told APTN that since the grotto was constructed, the area had been spared the worse of the storm damage that hit the rest of Florida over the past 80-plus years.
Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami on Friday said Wilma was expected to hover around Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula longer than previously thought.
They also said landfall somewhere on Florida's western coast wasn't likely until sometime Monday afternoon.
That could mean that the storm might be weaker when it reaches Florida.

Highway 1
Proudly brought to you by:
U.S. Route 1 (US 1) in Florida runs 541 miles (871 km) along the state's east coast from Key West to its crossing of the St. Marys River into Georgia north of Boulogne, and south of Folkston. US 1 was designated through Florida when the U.S. Highway System was established in 1926.
US 1 runs 541 miles (871 km) in the state of Florida, and is maintained by FDOT. From it's national southern terminus in Key West, it carries the Overseas Highway, the Keys main highway north to the mainland, entering South Florida. From South Florida to Jacksonville, US 1 runs close to the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, generally east of I-95 and west of State Road A1A, running roughly parallel with both roads. North of Jacksonville, US 1 curves inland towards the St. Mary's River as it enters Georgia.
As is the case with all Florida roads with Federal designations, the entirety of US 1 has a hidden Florida Department of Transportation designation: State Road 5 south of Callahan (except for 11 miles (18 km) as SR 805 in Palm Beach County); State Road 15 north of Callahan. US 1 is a designated Blue Star Memorial Highway along its entire route through the state. Markers are placed at various locations, including one in Rockledge, Florida and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. State Road A1A runs next to the Atlantic Ocean, roughly parallel to US 1 for much of its path through Florida.

Key West, the southernmost island destination in US, is a funky charm-filled place that combines sophistication with a down-to-earth mix of friendly people. Tropically lush Key West has wonderfully interesting architecture, a rich and varied history and all happening environment combining music, art and entertainment. If you want to chill and relax it is easy to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy eating in the extensive choice of quality restaurants. Key West is a well known all inclusive place where the One Human Family official philosophy of Key West was inaugurated.
This walking tour takes in many of the places of interest and gives a brief over-view of Key West.
