Russia: Holy relics given cosmonauts to boost spirits during ISS mission
Parts of the holy relics of Saint Seraphim of Sarov were handed to the Russian cosmonauts from the Cosmonauts' Training Centre, who will take them to the International Space Station (ISS) to protect the expedition members and strengthen their spirit, during a service in the village of Diveyevo, Friday. The official ceremony took place in the Seraphim-Diveyevo Convent.
SOT, Sergei Zalyotin, Russian cosmonaut (Russian): For us, cosmonauts, today is a saint event. It strengthens our spirit. This campaign will to some extent avert Russian people from the militant atheism and make us close to real faith.
SOT, Sergei Zalyotin, Russian cosmonaut (Russian): The relics will be packed in a soft box and the ISS Commander will carry them during the expedition.
SOT, Metropolitan Georgi of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas (Russian): The cosmonauts have addressed the church and asked to bless part of holy relics of Saint Seraphim of Sarov. They have an intention to take it to the International Space Station and conduct a special prayer there.

Worshippers mark Epiphany with dip in frozen lake
(20 Jan 2020) LEAD IN:
Orthodox Christians in Russia have celebrated Epiphany by taking chilly ice baths in a frozen lake.
Believers submerge themselves in freezing water to commemorate the baptism of Jesus Christ.
STORY-LINE:
It's the depths of winter and the pond at Nizhny Novgorod is a frozen expanse.
But preparations are underway for this icy water to host a group of hardy Christian worshippers.
Every year, believers take part in an Epiphany ritual where they submerge themselves in the freezing lake.
But first officials must test the water to make sure it is safe.
Samples are taken for microbiological indicators, including pathogenic microflora, and also for chemical indicators that characterize organic and non organic water pollution, says Dimitry Lipschits, Head of the Department for Supervision of Communal Hygiene of Nizhny Novgorod.
People need to understand that in the first place it is necessary to use only official places for swimming, where everything is arranged beforehand and there will also be rescuers and doctors on duty.
Popular folklore says the night of the Epiphany brings the most severe frosts of winter.
But this year, unseasonably warm conditions mean this pond is not as frozen as normal.
So organisers of the ritual are building the fonts where people will enter the water as close to shore as possible.
A diver in full kit enters each of the wooden enclosures to check there are no hidden dangers lurking beneath the surface.
The bottom of the font was examined for sharp objects, sharp corners and also how it is prepared for the divers. Nothing dangerous was found, says Andrey Sikida, part of the emergency rescue team of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
At midnight on the night of the Epiphany, a priest blesses the waters of the pond.
For now, worshippers are wrapped up against the cold.
But once the water has been blessed, those taking part strip off and prepare to take an icy cold dip.
In honour of the Holy Trinity - the Christian doctrine that God is made up of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit - bathers submerge themselves three times in the water.
And the people here insist the experience is not as uncomfortable as it looks.
This is Epiphany and during the Epiphany, the cold is always the same, it makes you warm, says Konstantin Loshchinsky,.
At first you feel the burst of energy, but after you do not feel cold at all. I cannot even fill the blowing of the wind.
For some, this is the first time they have taken part in the ritual after years of longing to be involved.
I decided to go into the water for the first time. I've beengaiming to do it for eight years. I wanted it and at last, decided to try. I have managed it, says Ksenya Nestrova.
In the Orthodox Christian calendar, this religious holiday celebrates the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River.
Worshippers believe that water on Epiphany night has healing powers and washes away their sins.

RUSSIA: CZAR NICHOLAS II TO GET PROPER RELIGIOUS BURIAL
Russian/Nat
Russia's last royal family, who were murdered in 1918 during the Bolshevik uprising, may soon get the proper religious burial denied them for nearly 80 years.
President Boris Yeltsin said in a Kremlin news conference Friday, that all the known remains of the Imperial family should now be solemnly buried together - probably in St Petersburg.
This follows positive identification of DNA by scientists of bones unearthed in the Ural Mountains in 1991.
Russia's last royal family fascinates the country whose socialist forebears murdered them in 1918 during the Bolshevik revolution.
Czar Nicholas II was forced to abdicate in 1917 as the workers' revolution gained strength.
He and his family and servants were exiled to Northern Siberia, and then moved to Yekaterinburg in the Ural Mountains.
Here they were massacred in revenge for the past and in fear for the future.
A memorial exists for the family but their whereabouts was a mystery until some bones were unearthed in 1991 in the Ural Mountains that were widely believed to be those of the murdered Romanovs.
Just last week the bones were positively identified by American and Russian scientists using D-N-A tests as those of the murdered royal family.
Since then speculation has been widespread about whether or not the czar and his family would now be given the proper religious burial denied them for nearly 80 years.
And the debate is also raging about where the reburial will take place.
Officials in Yekaterinburg want the Romanovs to be buried in their city but they face stiff opposition from St. Petersburg authorities who are lobbying for the czar to be interred in the pre-Revolutionary capital .
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Some say they should be buried in St. Petersburg where all the Romanovs are buried. But others say they should be buried in Yekaterinburg where they were shot. We will discuss the matter a little more and then make a decision. My opinion is that they should be buried in St. Petersburg where the dynasty is buried.
SUPERCAPTION: Boris Yeltsin, Russian President
The reburial would be a huge event in Russia where nationalist feelings are growing rapidly and the killing of the czar, his wife and five children is a source of deep shame.
It would also be a triumph for the Orthodox Church which has actively sought a religious reburial ceremony for the murdered Czar and his family .

The Alekseevskoe Society of Mercy on Assumption Island was one of the largest charities in the St. Petersburg diocese in the late XIX and early XX centuries. The Society was Archpriest Alexei Bell (February 20, 1836 - January 29, 1902). He purchased the island from the state and built soon after a poorhouse, orphanage and hospital. The stone built Church of the Assumption was constructed in 1876 with a chapel in the name of Tikhon of Zadonsk. Following his death and by order of Emperor Nicholas II, the Society became a public charitable institution.
Following the Revolution, the island became the home for juvenile delinquents, and then a nursing home, which lasted until 1964.

The Life And Death Of Mstislav I of Kiev
Mstislav I Vladimirovich the Great (Russian: Мстислав Владимирович Великий, Ukrainian: Мстислав Володимирович Великий, Belarusian: Мсціслаў Уладзіміравіч Вялікі) (June 1, 1076, Turov – April 14, 1132, Kiev) was the Grand Prince of Kiev (1125–1132), the eldest son of Vladimir II Monomakh by Gytha of Wessex. He figures prominently in the Norse Sagas under the name Harald, taken to allude to his grandfather, Harold II of England. Mstislav's Christian name was Theodore.
As his father's future successor, Mstislav reigned in Novgorod the Great from 1088–93 and (after a brief stint at Rostov) from 1095–1117. Thereafter he was Monomakh's co-ruler in Belgorod Kievsky, and inherited the Kievan throne after his death. He built numerous churches in Novgorod, of which St. Nicholas Cathedral (1113) and the cathedral of St Anthony Cloister (1117) survive to the present day. Later, he would also erect important churches in Kiev, notably his family sepulchre at Berestovo and the church of Our Lady at Podil.
Mstislav's life was spent in constant warfare with Cumans (1093, 1107, 1111, 1129), Estonians (1111, 1113, 1116, 1130), Lithuanians (1131), and the princedom of Polotsk (1127, 1129). In 1096, he defeated his uncle Oleg of Chernigov on the Koloksha River, thereby laying foundation for the centuries of enmity between his and Oleg's descendants. Mstislav was the last ruler of united Rus, and upon his death, as the chronicler put it, the land of Rus was torn apart.
In 1095, Mstislav wed Princess Christina Ingesdotter of Sweden, daughter of King Inge I of Sweden. They had many children:
Ingeborg of Kiev, married Canute Lavard of Jutland, and was mother to Valdemar I of Denmark
Malmfred, married (1) Sigurd I of Norway; (2) Eric II of Denmark
Eupraxia, married Alexius Comnenus, son of John II Comnenus
Vsevolod of Novgorod and Pskov
Maria, married Vsevolod II of Kiev
Iziaslav II of Kiev
Rostislav of Kiev
Sviatopolk of Pskov
Rogneda, married Yaroslav of Volinya
Xenia, married Briachislav of Izyaslawl
Christine died on January 18, 1122; later that year Mstislav married again, to Liubava Dmitrievna, the daughter of Dmitry Zavidich, a nobleman of Novgorod. Their children were:
Vladimir III Mstislavich (1132–1171)
Euphrosyne of Kiev, (c. 1130 – c. 1193) married King Géza II of Hungary in 1146
Through Euphrosyne, Mstislav is an ancestor of King Edward III of England and hence of all subsequent English and British monarchs. Through his mother Gytha, he is part of a link between Harold II of England and the modern line of English kings founded by William the Conqueror, who deposed him.
