Visiting the National Shrine of Saint Padre Pio in Batangas!
- Saint Padre Pio is revered as a man of charity and piety. Also known as the patron saint of civil defense volunteers, adolescents, and stress-relief, Saint Padre Pio's life and works have inspired several devotees in the Roman Catholic Chruch from all over the world.
- Jubilee of Mercy/Main Church. Marvel at the indigenous charm of the main church. The design is very open, with columns separating the interior from the exterior. There’s no wall, except the one where the altar is located. It’s like a big welcoming gazebo made of indigenous materials like bamboo, stones, wood, sawali, and nipa leaves. The ceiling resembles the shape of a salakot, a traditional Filipino headgear. Right in the middle of the ceiling hangs a cross with the Holy Family on one side and the crucified body of Christ on the other side.

The National Shrine and Parish of Saint Padre Pio. Pambansang Dambana at Parokya ni Santo Padre Pio), commonly known as Padre Pio Shrine, is a parish church and pilgrimage site situated at Brgy. San Pedro in Santo Tomas, Batangas Philippines. It is consecrated to the Italian Saint Pio of Pietrelcina.

The National Shrine of Saint Padre Pio is truly becoming one of the most visited Catholic pilgrimage site here in the Philippines by both local and foreign faithfuls. One must not confuse its natural beauty as mere displays of cultural relevance but as tools to rekindle the fire of faith and to reconnect us to our religious beliefs as well as our relationship with GOD.
It is also good to know that the shrine is also a favorite place for pilgrims to hold their annual Way of The Cross practice.

St. Padre Pio National Shrine Santo Tomas Batangas Philippines
The National Shrine and Parish of Saint Padre Pio(Filipino: Pambansang Dambana at Parokya ni Santo Padre Pio), commonly known as Padre Pio Shrine, is a parish church and pilgrimage site situated at Brgy. San Pedro, Santo Tomas, Batangas, Philippines. It is consecrated to the Italian Saint Pio of Pietrelcina.
Padre Pio died in 1968 at the age of 81 (He looks like he died just yesterday or just taking a nap. His body has NOT decomposed for 50 years). His health deteriorated in the 1960s but he continued his spiritual works. On September 21, 1968, the day after the 50th anniversary of his receiving the stigmata, Padre Pio felt great fatigue.[46] The next day, on September 22, 1968, he was supposed to offer a Solemn Mass, but feeling weak, he asked his superior if he might say a Low Mass instead, as he had done daily for years.
Due to the large number of pilgrims present for the Mass, Padre Pio's superior decided the Solemn Mass must proceed. Padre Pio carried out his duties but appeared extremely weak and fragile. His voice was weak and, after the Mass had concluded, he nearly collapsed while walking down the altar steps. He needed help from his Capuchin brothers. This was his last celebration of the Mass.
Early in the morning of September 23, 1968, Padre Pio made his last confession and renewed his Franciscan vows.[14] As was customary, he had his rosary in his hands, though he did not have the strength to say the Hail Marys aloud. Till the end, he repeated the words Gesù, Maria (Jesus, Mary). At around 2:30 a.m., he said, I see two mothers (taken to mean his mother and Mary).[46] At 2:30 a.m. he died in his cell in San Giovanni Rotondo with his last breath whispering, Maria![3]
His body was buried on September 26 in a crypt in the Church of Our Lady of Grace. His Requiem Mass was attended by over 100,000 people. He had often said, After my death I will do more. My real mission will begin after my death.[46] The accounts of those who stayed with Padre Pio till the end state that the stigmata had completely disappeared without a scar. Only a red mark as if drawn by a red pencil remained on his side but it disappeared.[46]

National Shrine of Saint Padre Pio, Santo Tomas, Batangas, Philippines: Peaceful and Powerful
BB and family take a stroll around the Shrine to St Padre Pio in Santo Tomas, Batangas. In 1918, at the age of 31, Padre Pio was inflicted with the Stigmata on his hands and kept those wounds for over 50 years. He is the first (is he the only?) stigmatised Priest, and that alone would make him pretty special. One of his most famous quotes is also one of my favourites, Pray, Hope and Don't Worry. How simple is that!
BB records part of a service being conducted and the singing is quite beautiful and then he takes a wonder around outside. We explore towers and various buildings and features, including the Fountain of Hope where people pray and leave a padlock and/or a bandana tied to the fence there. Divine Mercy Sanctuary for Pilgrims, Mary Mother of Mercy Belfry, Chapel of Reconciliation, Holy Water Sanctuary, The Relic of the Holy Cross and many more.
There is magnificent art around every turn and some incredible statues and carvings. The buildings are an unusual mix of steel and bamboo, only in the Philippines!
The site is a very peaceful and beautiful place, just be prepared to be overwhelmed by the power you will feel there, it's immense.
