In this episode of Russia: Tips, Tricks & Travel Tim goes to the little known yet massive Russian island that used to be (partially) part of the Japanese Empire.
Tim Kirby starts his journey downtown next to one of the most regular “guests” on our program Vladimir Lenin. From there he went to the amazing Japanese-styled Sakhalin Regional Museum. History sure makes a guy hungry, so on his way to the region’s first and oldest Japanese restaurant Tim stops by the Anton Pavlovich Chekhov memorial to pay his respects to a major player in the island’s history. At the restaurant Tim speaks with its founder and philanthropist Yutaka Miyanisi who shows our host the proper way to do sushi. One hint, it does not include mayo, not even spicy mayo!
From there Tim decides that he should share the island’s amazing seafood with his family and stocks up at the Central Market (“Успех”/”Uspekh”) with all sorts of fish, crab and caviar.
From there Tim drops his stuff at the Japanese built and inspired Santa Resort Hotel to see how hotel rooms made for the Land of the Rising Sun fare in Russia. After teaching the robot Japanese toilet who is boss Tim heads out to the ski slopes of the Gorny Vosdukh Ski Resort. Thankfully our hero survives the trip down the snowy routes and heads out to the Harat’s Pub downtown to meet up with a fan after it gets dark.
Next Tim has to track down said fan and does so using the old railway still built to Japanese Imperial standards. He then gets exclusive access to the port in Korsakov. From there Tim sneaks into the boat graveyard, you’ll see whether the guard dogs bit him or not jumping over the fence.

Russia's Far Eastern Federal District covers 41 percent of the country's territory but is home to a mere six percent of its population. And the region is losing an average of 17,000 inhabitants a year. In order to stem this rural exodus, but also to exploit this vast territory, Russian President Vladimir Putin has made developing the Far East a priority. FRANCE 24's Elena Volochine reports.

We are back to Russian Island or Russky Island. Last time we came here 10 years ago, before we moved to Singapore.
This island is located in the Great Gulf in the Sea of Japan, in the city of Vladivostok, Primorsky Krai, Russia.
The island is home to Far Eastern Federal University and the southern span of the Russky Bridge, the world's longest cable-stayed bridge, connecting the island to the mainland portion of Vladivostok.
We visited the Oceanarium and enjoyed a stroll along the island.

Bridge and Tunnel Announced for Sakhalin: Easternmost Island to be Linked With Russian Mainland

In other news, the construction of a bridge to Sakhalin has been incorporated into a comprehensive modernization and railway infrastructure development plan. Funding sources and further planning are required before the project can be implemented. The Russian Minister of Transportation, Yevgeny Dietrich, made the announcement after a meeting of the Presidium of the Council for Strategic Development and Priority Projects.

They lie between the Sea of Okhotsk and the North Pacific Ocean. There are 56 of them with a total land area of about 15,600 square kilometers and a population of 19,000. Along with millions of seabirds, crabs and fish, the Ainu people were early inhabitants on these islands. Yet a long-running dispute over these territories still continues. Russia: Severe icy conditions grind Russian far east to a halt
Footage released on Tuesday shows dozens of cars that rescued from severe icy conditions by EMERCOM workers in Dolinsky Region, Sakhalin.
Rescuers assisted passengers and drivers stuck in the Firsovo-Starodubsky area of the Region. In total, about a hundred vehicles required assistance.
A powerful cyclone is raging in the Far Eastern regions of Russia. The wind speed in the coastal areas is more than 40 metres per second.
The ferry crossing of Kholmsk-Vanino is out of service in Sakhalin, and the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk airport is closed to air traffic.

Sakhalin is an important economic region of the Russian Far East with its huge Oil and Gas Reserves especially in the Northern part of the Island. Southern Sakhalin was once under the rule of Imperial Japan until the Russo-Japanese War that ceded the whole of Sakhalin to Russia.

Russia's Far East was hit by a fierce winter storm on Thursday with driving winds, heavy snow and severe frosts hitting the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk region. The entire region including Sakhalin, Kuril Islands and the Okhotsk Sea were affected as were large parts of the Russian mainland.
