Volcano Hiking Adventure | Kagoshima Sakurajima ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Start your year with -- a VOLCANIC EXPLOSION! Japan's most active volcano is also a great place for lava trail hiking, hot spring bathing and pure adventure.
Where is this magical volcano you ask? It's down on Kyushu Island in Kagoshima Prefecture (1,300km from Tokyo) and that ash and fire throwing cone is SAKURAJIMA!
You can get there by ferry in 15 minutes from the city center for a ridiculous 180 yen / $1.50, about 4km across the sea.
Sakurajima is famous for island mikan, much smaller and sweeter than on the mainland. The Sakurajima DAIKON RADISH which can weigh as much as 45kg is also well known. It's the biggest radish in the world. (Are you excited yet?)
If radishes aren't enough, there's that LAVA TRAIL and loads of paths for bicycling. Not far away are sea view onsen baths where you can soak up those minerals and long views across the sea.
The Sakurajima Visitor's Center is the place to start your adventure.
Inside, data on the island's volcanic activity and history is all documented with diagrams and videos. There's also a gift shop with some cool things to buy.
I went in the off season (January) but that shouldn't stop you from visiting. It just means you get the whole place to yourself.
The population on Sakurajima is quite old. I met a 97 year old woman who was walking around just fine. She was half my size but seemed to have twice my energy so I think there's something truly magical about this island. I hope some of that magic rubs off onto you as well.
HOW TO GET THE SAKURAJIMA:
It's a 90-115 minute flight from Tokyo (Haneda or Narita Airport)
or a 7 hour trip on the Shinkansen. Great if you have a JR Rail Pass!
Buses depart regularly from Kagoshima Airport to the city center where you can either grab a taxi to the ferry terminal or a bus from Chuo-Kagoshima Station. It's a short ride.
THE SAKURAJIMA FERRY:
It's 24 hours, departing every 15-20 minutes.
Adults: 180 yen ($1.50)
Child: 90 Yen ($0.75)
Ferry Schedule and Guide:
Try a bowl of udon or soba on board for 480 yen!

Kagoshima City - Japan - Sakurajima - Gourmet Street - Hokke Hotel
Living in the Shadows of a Volcano
Kagoshima City is the administrative, economic, and cultural center of Kagoshima Prefecture and is a castle town dating back to the 14th century. The city and its suburbs are located on the northeastern part of Satsuma Peninsula and face the Kagoshima Bay, which is more commonly known as Kinko Bay.
The smoking Sakurajima centered in Kinko Bay is one of the main symbols of Kagoshima Prefecture. Throughout history Sakurajima (4 km from central Kagoshima City) has been the site of multiple massive eruptions and continues to be one of the most well-known active volcanos in the world. Sakurajima was originally an isolated island however, as a result of the eruption of 1914, the island was joined to the adjacent Osumi Peninsula. The leva fields can still be seen on the island as testament to the history of the volcano's eruptions. - Japan Tourism

Satsuma Burn, who accepted Western artifacts early, led the development of modern industry. This is a reconstruction of 19th century glass craft factory, making glassware. This factory makes crafts in the style of the 19th century. The glass is blown and polished to make a bowl, and the finished surface is finished by machine. Satsuma Kiriko, which began to be made in Satsuma Bay 160 years ago, became a special product representing Kagoshima. The colors and elaborate patterns are very beautiful.

Kagoshima City Museum of ART, Center of Culture & History of Kagoshima, Japan
Center of Culture of History of KAGOSHIMA
This museum located at ruins of Kagoshima Castle in which Shimazu family governed Kagoshima for centuries.
At the foot of Mountain Shiroyama, this area has prospered as the historical center of politics and culture.
This art museum opened in 1954 and stored historical artifacts.
As only one public art museum, it has collected precious art pieces.
At the same time, this museum has contributed to the advancement of art culture of Kagoshima through activities such as exhibition and other activities of art museum.
In order to catch up with diversifying art activities and expectation of Kagoshima citizens, old museum was demolished and new museum was built and started on 29 November 1985.
New museum mainly stores arts of local artists and western pieces from the end of the 19th century.
My Personal Recommendation at this Museum
It is wonderful to place to walk around while appreciating various kinds of art. I love to take a rest and drink a cup of coffee at the restaurant in this museum. It is confortable!

Sakurajima, Japan - Sakurajima Island Volcano Tour (2019)
Sakurajima (Japanese: 桜島, literally Cherry blossom Island) is an active composite volcano, formerly an island and now a peninsula, in Kagoshima Prefecture in Kyushu, Japan. The lava flows of the 1914 eruption connected it with the Ōsumi Peninsula. It is the most active volcano in Japan.
The volcanic activity still continues, dropping volcanic ash on the surroundings which continues as of March 2019. Earlier eruptions built the white sand highlands in the region. The most recent eruption started on May 2, 2017. On September 13, 2016 a team of experts from Bristol University and the Sakurajima Volcano Research Centre in Japan suggested that the volcano could have a major eruption within 30 years.
Sakurajima is a stratovolcano. Its summit has three peaks, Kita-dake (northern peak), Naka-dake (central peak) and Minami-dake (southern peak) which is active now.
Kita-dake is Sakurajima's highest peak, rising to 1,117 m (3,665 ft) above sea level. The mountain is in a part of Kagoshima Bay known as Kinkō-wan. The former island is part of the city of Kagoshima. The surface of this volcanic peninsula is about 77 km2 (30 sq mi).
Kagoshima (鹿児島市 Kagoshima-shi, Japanese: [ka̠ɡo̞ɕima̠]) is the capital city of Kagoshima Prefecture at the south western tip of the island of Kyushu in Japan, and the largest city in the prefecture by some margin. It has been nicknamed the Naples of the Eastern world for its bay location (Aira Caldera), hot climate, and emblematic stratovolcano, Sakurajima. The city was officially founded on April 1, 1889.
日本九州鹿兒島市覓獲精美早餐後自駕乘汽車渡輪往櫻島活火山+海景酒店-粵語解述2019 Kagoshima Vehicular Ferry to Sakurajima

About three kilometers of walking trails connects Nagisa Lava park with Karasujima Observation Point along the water beside the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal. The trail cuts through a lava zone created by the powerful eruption of 1914. That burned every grasses and plants. However, travelers can observe the growth of grasses and short plants nowadays.

Located in the middle of Kagoshima Bay, Sakurajima is the area's most splendid geographic feature, having an elevation of 1117 meters and a circumference of about 50 kilometers.
Before a strong eruption in 1914, Sakurajima used to be an island in the bay, but the massive lava flow from that eruption created the volcano's current land connection to the Osumi Peninsula in the east. However For a great number of travelers the volcano is still most easily accessed by the ferries that run the 3.5 kilometers between Kagoshima Port and the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal.
Sakurajima has three main peaks: Kita-dake(peak) (, 1117 meters), Naka-dake (1060 meters) and Minami-dake (1040 meters). The Minami-dake peak is currently the most active, with a lot of eruptions taking place from the Showa Crater on the peak's eastern slope. Approaching within two kilometers of the volcano's craters is banned, but there are many observation points around Sakurajima where eruptions can be seen from about three kilometers away.

The easiest way to travel around Sakurajima is by rental car, which can be taken onto the ferry (1150 yen one way for 3-4 meter long cars; 1600 yen one way for 4-5 meter long cars). Driving once around the coast of Sakurajima takes about an hour. Many car rental outlets are found in the city center and at the airport.
There is some transportation for travelers who want to travel around Sakurajima, like a loop bus, the Sakurajima Island View Bus, that operates hourly from the ferry terminal to the Yunohira observation point and back. The fare depends on the distance traveled or is 500 yen for a 1-day pass. Instead, sightseeing bus tours are available for Sakurajima (3-4 hours, about 2500 yen) or in combination with Kagoshima (6 hours, about 4000 yen).
