Salida, Colorado is the largest National Historic District in Colorado
While many cities trade their history for modern buildings, it’s just the opposite in Salida. History is embraced, celebrated and proudly visible.
The Salida Downtown Historic District is the largest historic district in Colorado and was added to the National Historic Register in 1984.
Founded in 1880, Salida’s 100 turn-of-the-century historic buildings are largely regarded as the best collection of historically significant buildings in the state. Now they house charming antique
and consignment shops, art galleries, outdoor gear stores, independently-owned restaurants, cafes and bars. But each holds fascinating stories of Salida’s colorful past, too.

D&RGW #493 Shakedown Run Animas R. Crossing 1/28/2020
I “Chase and Pace” the rebuilt D&RGW K37 #493 on its first “Shakedown Run” to Home Ranch about 6 miles north of Durango. The Rockwood turn was cut short when it developed a hot journal on the engineer’s side trailing truck. The engine and caboose #0540 were backed a short distance and turned on the Y at the Events Center. The 493 moved under its own power for the first time in 52 years 4 days before after the D&S employees performed a multi-year, multi-million dollar rebuild and conversion to burn oil. The conversion to burn oil will reduce the risk of starting fires during extremely dry condition. The 493 was originally built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1902 as standard gauge and converted to narrow gauge in 1928 by the D&RGW Burnham Shops. The locomotive was retired by the D&RGW in 1968, 52 years ago. It was purchased and moved to the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in 1981. It sat outside on display in Silverton for 20 years.
“Just Pacing” and the Full “Shakedown Run” to follow soon.

Como, Colorado 1929-2018
Como, Colorado was once the division point for the Denver, South Park & Pacific, which eventually became the Colorado & Southern Railway. The line from Denver reached Como and then split with one route to Gunnison via the Alpine Tunnel and the other over Boreas Pass and onto Leadville.
Incredible work has been done in the last several years to restore the roundhouse, turntable, and depot. New track has been laid and excursions are run occasionally with a steam locomotive.
I visited Como in 2018 for the first time since my first visit in 2004. The restoration is simply mind-boggling as you can see in the differences of the photos.
If you haven't been to Como, this will give you a small look at the dramatic changes that have happened and a look inside the 1881 roundhouse. In just the year since we visited in 2018, more rolling stock has arrived and more track has been laid. These are exciting times for those with a passion for the DSP&P/C&S!

Explore the history of Colorado's Forts
August 1 is Colorado Day.
The Centennial State first joined the union on Aug. 1, 1876 thanks to Proclamation 230, which was signed by President Ulysses S. Grant.
As settlers from the eastern United States ventured westward, forts were created throughout the American West including Fort Collins, Fort Garland, Fort Lupton and Fort Vasquez in Colorado.
9NEWS Photojournalist Matt Bell dives into Colorado's rich history and shows us these four forts in Colorado.

American Southwest (#10): Vicksburg Ghost Town, Colorado
Vicksburg ... was founded in 1879 when gold and silver were discovered along Clear Creek. The town, named for storekeeper Vick Keller, featured a school, two saloons and billiard parlors, two hotels, and a boarding house, along with many log cabin residences. The post office, called Vicksburgh, lasted from 1881 until 1885, about the time the precious metals of the area gave out.
The main road (FR 390) now bypasses Vicksburg, but one can still visit this lovely little town by parking at the Vicksburg Museum's lot and walking in. This way is rather like backing into town, because once you come to the front of the museum, you will also see Vicksburg's main street, shaded by rows of Balm of Gilead trees, which were packed in by burros during the town's heyday. Six well-maintained old cabins posted against trespassing and privately owned (some by descendants of the original miners) line the north side of the street.
The museum, opened weekends and holidays by the Clear Creek Canyon Historical Society, is located in the Shephard House and recreates a mining-era home. On the museum's grounds are interesting artifacts, such as a tram drum, ore cars, wagons, a smelter pot, and a gold rocker (a device used to separate gold from its surrounding material).
