Salisbury Market - Charter Market - market square Salisbury Wiltshire
Salisbury Market Wiltshire
Salisbury holds a market on Tuesdays and Saturdays and has held markets regularly since 1227. In the 15th century the Market Place was dotted with stone crosses marking the centres for certain trades and goods. Today only the Poultry Cross remains, to which flying buttresses were added in 1852. The other crosses were the Livestock Cross, the Cheese & Milk Cross and the Wool & Yarn Cross.
In 1226, King Henry III granted the Bishop of Salisbury a charter to hold a fair lasting 8 days from the Feast of the Assumption of Mary (15 August).[12] Over the centuries the dates for the fair have moved around, but in its modern guise, a funfair is now held in the Market Place for three days from the third Monday in October. However, there is still an ancient law stating that the fair can be held in the Cathedral Close.
Even though Salisbury's famous Charter Market is held outdoors in all weathers throughout the year, it never fails to please the shopper and browser alike. Colourful, noisy, bustling, friendly and full of enticing aromas; from freshly ground coffee and fresh bread to hot doughnuts, hog roast and newly cut flowers. You can also discover a bit of Italy, selling the best ice cream, oils and olives in the South West. Also fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, cheeses, eggs, haberdashery, carpets, clothes, shoes, jewellery, kitchenware and wooden furniture, in fact the range of goods on offer is outstanding and all at exceptional prices.
The farmers' section within the market now runs every market day throughout the year and has proved to be an invaluable addition. It can be recognised by the line of green and yellow umbrellas located in the middle of the market. The produce sold is grown or produced by local farmers selling goods such as smoked trout and other fish, fresh bread, eggs, meats, sausages, bacon, cheeses and locally produced wines - something for all tastes. Around the top of the market you will find many cafés serving espresso and cappucino as well as beer, wine and food, with plenty of outside tables and chairs.
Other shopping centres in Salisbury include The Old George Mall, The Maltings, Winchester Street and the Crosskeys precinct.

SAVE Salisbury Market !
ALL MY OWN WORK! This is my protest against the 'Salisbury Vision,' a coalition of Salisbury Business leaders who are trying to sneakily destroy the 800 year old Charter Market, of which I have been a regular customer every Tuesday and Saturday all my life, and my parents and grandparents before me.
Oh, they say, we have a wonderful vision of how Salisbury Market Place can work in the future, look at our slick pictures, doesn't it look good? Oh yes, it all looks very nice, but in the meantime, while the work is going ahead, the market traders - many of whom have traded on the same spots for 30 to 50 years - will have to move off, will lose their regular custom, and be forced to pack the business in. Salisbury is a traditional market selling all sorts of fruit, veg and meats, household goods and specialities, regular longterm traders you can know personally and trust, all year round in all weathers - the Salisbury Vision want a shrunken sanitised 'tourist-friendly market' that will serve no function for the community at all.
They are killing the market - Do we really want a new supermarket or coffee-bars in its place? Do we?
Salisbury Barons - Salisbury Market Baron
Salisbury Market Baron, part of the Barons Trail in Salisbury 2015
Lee O'Brien has painted the Salisbury Market Baron, seen here in the Guildhall Square in Salisbury, celebrating the fact that five years after Magna Carta came the founding of Salisbury Cathedral, and shortly after the founding by Royal Charter of our Charter Market - itself nearly 800 years old and a piece of Living History!!

Salisbury Wiltshire England - 2018
SALISBURY WILTSHIRE ENGLAND July 2, 2018. Salisbury is very compact City with most attractions a short walk from the central Market Square. I guess most come to view the magnificent Cathedral but there are many more lovely old buildings to admire and to try to figure out how they managed to build them hundreds of years ago.
Salisbury market incident
Fi tried to get into shoe zone but a market stall holder who was packing up had parked in the way. He would not move when asked but did add soon as the council man turned up 45mins later...

Salisbury named best place to live in the UK 2019

The city which was the scene of the Russian nerve agent attack has been named the best place to live in the UK.
Salisbury in Wiltshire was chosen by the Sunday Times Best Places To Live guide because it remains a divinely attractive and welcoming place.
Former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were exposed to Novichok in the city on 4 March 2018.
Military personnel spent months decontaminating various sites in the city after the incident.
Sunday Times home editor Helen Davies said: Salisbury has shown real collective spirit in dealing with a chemical attack that saw the cathedral city become the centre of world headlines for all the wrong reasons.
There are still parts of the city where the clean-up continues, but to bounce back and be even stronger is a sure sign of a very special community, which is one of the reasons we have chosen Salisbury as the best place to live in Britain in 2019.
It remains a divinely attractive and welcoming place. It's handy for coast, countryside and London, has some of the best schools in the southwest, a great market and it's very strong culturally, too.
