Crystal digging at Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge
People come from all over the world to dig for the selenite crystals at the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge near Jet, Oklahoma. Of course this is the only place in the world where you can find these unique and colorful hourglass shaped selenite crystals. While they are created by a type of magnetic, molecular magnetic force, not everything is quite known as to how they are formed. When you dig for them, you will need some shovels, a day tint for shade, lots of water and sunscreen. The crystal digging season runs April 1st through October 15th.
Great Salt Plains State Park, Jet, Oklahoma
Great Salt Plains State Park is one of Oklahoma's most unique state parks. The barren landscape of the Great Salt Plains is comprised of salt left over from an ocean that covered Oklahoma in prehistoric times. The Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge sits adjacent to the park and offers great bird watching and fall foliage viewing opportunities. The refuge is the only spot in the world where crystal enthusiasts can dig for hourglass selenite crystals, a rare and fragile form of selenite, which is a form of gypsum.

Overland Expo West Trip Ep. 001 - The Great Salt Plains of Oklahoma
We left for our month long overland trip at a ridiculously early hour. Our plan was to barrel through and have a very long travel session until we got to Soccoro, New Mexico. We wanted to stop at the Very Large Array.
Things didn’t go as planned. When we arrived at the Great Salt Plains State Park in Oklahoma, we decided to slow way down. We ended up staying the night to work and explore.
Then, we made our way to Black Mesa, the highest point in Oklahoma to hike to the summit.
