Sam's Point Preserve, or Sam's Point Dwarf Pine Ridge Preserve, is a 4,600-acre preserve in Ulster County on the highest point of the Shawangunk Ridge in New York, on the Wawarsing, New York-Shawangunk town line. It is owned and managed by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation after having previously been managed by The Nature Conservancy. Its unique environment features dwarf pitch pine trees along the ridgetop. Located within the park is Lake Maratanza, the highest lake on the ridge, and the Ellenville Fault Ice Caves.

Cragsmoor is located atop the Shawangunk Ridge, in the south part of the Town of Wawarsing. Sam's Point Preserve is near Cragsmoor.

Fire Destroys Hudson Valley Business Where HBO Is Filming

More drinking water in the Hudson Valley has been contaminated with potentially toxic chemicals. The New York State Department of Health told New Windsor officials’ low levels of PFOA and PFOS were detected the town’s new water supply. Officials say the levels are below the EPA health advisory and is safe to drink. However, out of an abundance of caution, New Windsor officials are shutting down the Butterhill water supply and will be using the town’s old water supply.

A potentially deadly tick, that causes dangerous brain swelling, is expected to return to the Hudson Valley this summer. The Powassanvirus is spread by the same deer tick that carries Lyme disease. The virus kills about 10 percent, leaving half with permanent neurological problems. In 2017, the last year on record, there were 33 people diagnosed with the virus in the United States. 16 of those live in New York. Last summer, Hudson Valley Post reported on two local residents who were diagnosed with the virus.

Jeopardy champ James Holzhauer has been offered a job by the Hudson Valley Renegades. The Minor league baseball team offered a him contract to be their GM for 1 day. The team hopes Holzhauer will take up the offer, and live out his lifelong dream being in professional baseball. Holzhauer has won close to two-million-dollars on Jeopardy, which puts him in second place for all time winnings on the game show.

A Hudson Valley store is going viral for the wrong reasons. A Facebook post shows a help wanted sign outside Xtreme Motorsports in Kinderhook. The issue, Wanted is spelled wrong. It’s spelled W-O-N-T-E-D. The business has yet to respond to their potential spelling error.

A fire that broke out where HBO was filming in the Hudson Valley left three families displaced and destroyed a local car dealership. Several fire departments responded to the massive fire that broke out at the 613 Automotive Group on South Main Street in Ellenville yesterday. No injuries were reported and fire officials don't suspect arson but an investigation continues. The HBO six-part series I Know This Much Is True, stars Mark Ruffalo and has filmed all over the area recently.

Snowshoeing on the Ellenville Fault Line

Ellenville Wawarsing has some amazing trails here in the Gunks! And hikers come from all over to play on the mountain. I went up SMiley Road to the second gully. From there I bushwacked straight up. It turns into the Ellenville Fault Line which becomes the Grand Canyon.
