Samphire Hoe Nature Reserve, Kent, England
Samphire Hoe is land reclaimed from the sea during the construction of the channel tunnel under the seabed, between England and France (1988-1994), when almost 5 million cubic metres of chalk from the tunnel excavations were deposited at the base of Shakespeare Cliff.
Samphire Hoe, isolated from the rest of England by the white cliffs, has become a haven for wildflowers and birds, with a number of rare in Britain plant species (including the early spider orchid) colonising the meadows and rock face.
Access to Samphire Hoe Nature Reserve is from the A20 just outside of Dover, Kent, England.

Samphire Hoe, Kent, UK
Samphire Hoe is a new piece of land created by Eurotunnel during the construction of the Channel Tunnel. It covers a 30-hectare site at the foot of Shakespeare Cliff, between Dover and Folkestone.
It was created for the disposal of the Channel Tunnel spoil. It was decided that the option with the least adverse environmental impact was to reclaim land at the base of Shakespeare Cliff. There was already access to the site from the Dover to Folkestone railway line and through a tunnel in the cliff left from the 1970s tunnel attempt. The main advantage of this location was no need for any transportation of the spoil to another site and the creation of a large platform to be used as a work site as the tunnel was dug.
As the Tunnel boring machines cut the chalk marl it was loaded onto rail tipper wagons, brought back along the tunnel and then moved onto the surface by conveyor belt. 1.7km of sheet piling enclosed lagoons were then infilled with the chalk marl. The area became a 24hours a day work site.
Once construction works were completed, the site was then landscaped to provide an undulating topography including some low lying wetlands.
It is home to more than 200 species of plants (including the rare early spider orchid with 8,500 plants recorded in 2013), 120 species of birds and 30 of butterflies have been recorded. Half of the Hoe was sown with wildflower seeds. This consisted of five mixes totalling 31 species, designed to suit the different conditions on the site. The rest of the site was planted with annual rye grass. This has since died out allowing plants from the surrounding areas to colonise. This newly developed vegetation has attracted a wide variety of wildlife.
Samphire is owned by Eurotunnel and managed together with White Cliffs Countryside Partnership. WCCP ensures a correct balance is struck between visitor access and wildlife conservation.
Toeristisch Engeland - Dover - Samphire Hoe
What is Samphire Hoe?
This is Samphire Hoe in Dover, Kent. It is a creation from the excavated chalk from construction of the channel tunnel, 4.9 million cubic metres of it! It is located at the bottom of a section of the White Cliffs of Dover know as Shakespeare Cliff. This section of the cliff already has a railway tunnel that was built in 1844 which is part of the South Eastern Main Line. To build this tunnel, a huge section of the cliff was blown away as it was too unstable to tunnel through, which is why the railway is open at this part. The base of Shakespeare Cliff was a major working area during construction of the channel tunnel and was a 24 hour work site for 6 years.
After the channel tunnel was opened in 1994, Samphire Hoe was landscaped and opened to the public in 1997 as a country park. The site is not only a country park. It is a working operational part of the channel tunnel siting the ventilation and cooling plants for the tunnel.

Ashford International to Dover Priory – Hastings DEMU cab ride – 31 December 2016
Canterbury Bell, Part 2: Cab view from Ashford International to Dover Priory, filmed from our preserved Hastings DEMU on Saturday 31 December 2016, during the outward leg of our Canterbury Bell railtour.
.
In this video we cover the 23 miles and 57 chains along the South Eastern Main Line from Ashford International to Dover Priory. This includes the section between Folkestone and Dover which had been out of bounds to our train if carrying passengers — until provision was made in the twin single-bore Shakespeare Tunnels to facilitate emergency egress from trains such as ours that have no end gangways. At the eastern end of Shakespeare Tunnel we also pass over the new viaduct built during 2016 after the original line was damaged in a storm a year earlier.
.
Video and audio footage are from an unattended unmonitored forward-facing cab-camera in motor coach 60116 Mountfield. The railtour began at Eastbourne and ran via Rye and Dover to Faversham.

STORM ANGUS BATTERS BRITAIN
Desperate scramble to rescue crew from massive cargo ship sinking in the Channel as ‘life-threatening’ Storm Angus unleashes floods, snow, 97mph winds and FIRE
Eleven people have reportedly been air-lifted to safety while others remain on board the vessel
A CARGO ship is being evacuated after smashing into a ‘barge full of rocks’ three miles south west of Samphire Hoe near Dover.
Around 23 crew members are believed to be on board the 200-metre vessel – eleven of whom have reportedly been air-lifted to safety.
Coastguard boats and helicopters are attending the scene which has been declared a major incident.
The Hong Kong registered boat named Saga Sky is taking on water after losing engine and steering power - however it is reportedly not expected to sink.
The vessel was travelling past Folkestone and Dover when the crash happened.
It is unclear if weather conditions played a part in the incident although the region has been battered by Storm Angus which has produced 97mph winds overnight and this morning.
Ferry services have also been suspended.
A UK coastguard spokeswoman said: Deal and Dover Coastguard Rescue Teams have been put on standby to help receive crew members rescued from the vessel.
Duty commander Steve Carson added that the storm conditions have made the rescue operation difficult.
He said: The weather conditions this morning are particularly challenging and we have declared this a major incident.
We are now planning to evacuate the crew from the cargo vessel and our HM Coastguard helicopters from Lydd and Lee-on-Solent are on the scene.
Brits in many parts of the country have woken up to floodwater and damaged buildings this morning as Storm Angus took hold last night.
Winds of 97mph were reported by BBC Weather off the south coast this morning with one family in Folkestone, Kent, saying it sounded like “we [were] next to a [Boeing] 747 jet on take off”.
They added: “Whole house is shaking and windows flexing … Crazy here.”
Next door in Brighton, East Sussex, a video emerged showing strong winds wrecking scaffolding that collapsed onto an empty parked car.
The family also tweeted a view of the choppy seas outside their front door and claimed waves five metres tall were breaking on the beach.
A severe flood alert – a warning of immediate danger to life – was put out in Devon before the River Mole burst its banks.
Police had to evacuate a chalet park as fast flowing water rose to around 4ft in South Molton.
Residents were allowed to return to their homes just over an hour after the emergency measure was taken as the rain had stopped and floodwater reduced.
Almost 2,000 properties in the south-west of England, most of them in Devon, are without electricity say Western Power Distribution.
Southern England has been hit particularly hard by this season’s first named storm with reports of damaged walls, broken trees and floodwater.
This morning the storm system is unleashing rainwater in the Midlands, East Anglia and Wales as it moves further north.
The highest recorded rainfall so far is in Exeter where 53mm fell but that could rise with 21 flood warnings and 30 flood alerts issued across southwestern England.
The High Street in Swanage, Dorset, was closed after sea water flooded the road and the sea wall was damaged with bricks splattered across the sea front.
A huge cargo ship has also been taking on water in the English channel after hitting a barge filled with rocks.
There are estimated to be 20-30 crew members on board with five having been rescued so far.
There could have been a potentially fatal accident in Guernsey, Channel Islands, when a tree fell in strong winds and smashed through a bench
