9. Vera Valley. I would suggest staying in the village Valverde de la Vera and my pick is the cosy and rustic La Picota:
8. Cadaqués. I love Tramantua Hotel, a white-washed gem run by a husband and wife team… service is fantastic, and it’s right in the old city, plus near the beach:
7. Cáceres. We stayed at the budget but good Hotel Iberia Plaza Mayor with views of the square): If you want to stay IN the old city though, the Parador here is a 14th century palace - the full Caceres medieval dream!

3. El Rocío. I love Hotel La Malvasía with its old-world luxury, the fact it’s only 5-minutes walk from the famous Santa María del Rocío church and they also have a terrace which is perfect for sunsets.
2. Mejorada del Campo.
Bus info: (take the bus from Conde de Casal). Don’t spend the night there. It’s a day trip. But my favourite Madrid hotels are below (in descending price order):
Pestana Plaza Mayor (right on Plaza Mayor and with a pool) -
Gran Hotel Inglés -
The Pavilions -
Vincci The Mint -
7 Islas -
1. Cádiz. Right in the old town, I love the wonderful Hotel Boutique Convento Cádiz, housed in a renovated 17th century monastery:

Real Life Pirate Ship - Nao Victoria - Saint Augustine - Matts Rad Show
Victoria (or Nao Victoria, as well as Vittoria) was a Spanish carrack and the first ship to successfully circumnavigate the world. The Victoria was part of a Spanish expedition commanded by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, and after his death during the voyage, by Juan Sebastián Elcano. The expedition began with five ships but the Victoria was the only ship to complete the voyage. Magellan was killed in the Philippines. The ship was built at a shipyard in Gipuzkoa, with the Basques being reputed shipbuilders at the time, and along with the four other ships, it was given to Magellan by King Charles I of Spain. Victoria was named after the church of Santa Maria de la Victoria de Triana, where Magellan took an oath of allegiance to Charles V in order to be granted full access to the Spice Islands. Victoria was an 85 ton ship with a crew of 42.
The four other ships were Trinidad
San Antonio
Concepcion
Santiago
Trinidad, Magellan's flagship,
Victoria was rated a carrack or nao (ship), as were all the others except Trinidad, which was a caravel.

Erasmus experience has changed my Life
On the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Erasmus programme, we present the beautiful story of our student Anna Sorrentino, who, during an Erasmus work placement in Málaga, has got a job, a house and...a husband.
But let her talk:
It all started on September 27, 2010 the day I arrived in Spain as an Erasmus work placement student at Malaga Conservatoire. After the first difficult moment, life seemed wonderful to me here in the sense that everything seemed easier and people are more willing to help you and smile at you at all times, think that within a week I already attended the school of Spanish language, already had friends to go out at night, already had a great relationship with my roommates and above all I had a particular professor of flute who had made the sonreir her guiding principle. Later I realized here all people are made this way, in the sense that: put yourself in this culture is not difficult at all and never, ever, you will feel alien: Malaga is a city that thrives on foreigners: Europeans, Nordic, Latin American, African, and all, in a few days, feel like home. Incredible ... the Malaga ... unique people, unique ... and if I, a true Neapolitan, say that, you can believe it.
My first important friendship was Csongor Papp an Hungarian boy who was in Malaga as an Erasmus flute student. It was an artistic love at first sight: within a month we were already planning a concert we then performed in Museo Interactivo de la Musica in Malaga. With him and other students of the Conservatoire we spent unforgettable moments: the rehearsals, the emotion, fear, laughter...things that remain engraved in your memory forever! Csongor came to my wedding and performed a concert in the evening for all the guests, what a friend! 3,000 km were made just for me! Another important course I followed was: Composition for film. At year end we have written, all the trainees, music for a silent movie.
Exactly after 60 days, on November 27, 2010 I knew the person who was to become my husband, Antonio J. Martin Ruiz. That day it rained heavily, a rain I had not seen in 2 months. I was easily accustomed to 28 degrees in 2 months, often after class we went to the beach, playing, walking and the rain of November 27 was really something unexpected...in fact it was a day that I would remember for a lifetime...just did not know it. I found myself to shelter in a cafe in Plaza de la Merced. I was drinking coffee when I saw him coming in, he stared and smiled at me, soaking wet like me. We had to laugh to look at each other and began to chat. So in no time we started going out together but we were already in love with that first look in the cafeteria. After only a few months we already decided to get married. The year 2011 has been a wonderful year: we have traveled extensively. Madrid, Salamanca, Granada, Ronda, Paris, Cadiz, Gibraltar, Palma de Mallorca. Meanwhile, besides studying I was preparing the ground to begin work. I started sending resumes to schools and in September 2011 the Director of the School of Music in Alhaurin de la Torre, Pablo Garcia Vega, called me to form a choir at his school. This school is the most coveted of all the Costa del Sol: it has more than 300 members and is the center of an International Jazz Festival which takes place every year in the school. It has recording studios, concert auditoriums, computer rooms and each room with piano, percussion and air conditioning which is essential here. I have already performed two concerts in December 2011 and one in March. Now we are preparing for two concerts in June. A few days ago I was asked to write Spanish and Neapolitan folk music and if I do that it will be published. Antonio and I live in a penthouse in Fuengirola, Costa del Sol, 25 kilometers from Malaga. Our house is 200 m from the sea and every day I do a walk on the waterfront before heading to the beach where it is always good all year round, except during January or February. I'm talking about me but the English are at the beach even in January. In the afternoon I go to school or do some private lessons.
My husband is a philosopher, but he works in the town of Mijas (a real pearl of the Coast) in the administration of urban development. When he was a boy was a famous soccer player here in Andalusia and played seriously in Segunda División. Now he plays the Padel a typically Spanish sport (like tennis) often I follow him while he plays because I, as his wife, can enjoy the swimming pool or a spa or simply sunbathe in the club. We have amazing friends: with them we often share the weekend and the various borrachere.
I never imagined such a life: carefree, happy, serene...In one year I got a job, house, husband, family and a world of extraordinary friends.

Porto’s Taberna Santo António: My Kind of Restaurant
I spend nearly every evening in Europe hunting...hunting for places like Porto’s Taberna Santo António. This impromptu clip gives a sense of the neighborhood energy of a great little eatery, with a local friend giving me what we agreed is a little bit of “heaven on a spoon.”
Looking for great new restaurants to recommend in the next edition of one of my guidebooks is also a lot like fishing: Sometimes you go home empty-handed, and sometimes you score. In Porto, I was a happy guidebook writer, having found several great new restaurants — some characteristic and rough like this one, others more romantic and elegant.
Here’s the write-up for the Rick Steves Portugal guidebook —
[$$] Taberna Santo António is a convivial, hole-in-the-wall place — the quintessence of a family-run, neighborhood favorite. There’s a tight dining room and a few prime seats at the bar where eaters are choosing from six traditional stews, marveling at the homemade desserts, and having fun with the waitstaff (Rua das Virtudes 32, tel. 222-055-306).
My Study Abroad Adventures
As a sophomore in college I decided to study abroad for the fall semester in Spain. Over the four months I was there I traveled to 8 different countries, learned another language, experienced many cultures, and made friends of a lifetime. It has been the best decision of my life. I have learned, experienced, and grew up so much. Enjoy!

4. EPIC MADRID FOOD TOUR! ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Madrid has amazing food.. there I said it! Often when people think of Madrid they think of museums and art and maybe a trip to Toledo. But trust me, this city has an incredible food scene that is less touristy and more underground compared to some other cities in Spain. So, I wanted to make this Madrid food guide so that you can enjoy it like a true local!
Today I take you to 10 of my favourite places to eat 10 incredible bites. We start with the best chocolate in the city (melted from actual chocolate) at an over 100-year-old pastry shop. Then we head to a local and hidden family-run joint for the city’s top Spanish omelette (tortilla española) and a beer (caña).
Next up! Vermouth time. We nip across to the San Miguel market for a sweet red vermouth on tap just like the locals do (along with marcona almonds, campo real olives and a local skewer). Then we head to a SECRET STOP. Cloistered nuns who bake cookies in - the cookies are delicious and moreish and the experience is truly one-of-a-kind. As a friend used to say, like doing a drug deal!
OK… getting full. Next stop - jamón… ham! And the good stuff - acorn-fed jamón ibérico in a family-run ham shop. Around the corner we head to an over 100-year-old tapas bar for one of the most delicious tapas in the city - bull tail stew parcel, paired with a Rioja wine.
Next it’s Madrid’s most famous bite - the calamari sandwich. There are so many places that do this, but we head for the best one! And for more seafood, we swing around into the La Latina neighbourhood for the best bacalao in the city, served with a white wine in a place that is a true Madrid rough-and-tumble tapas bar.
And then - tapas. We swing into Casa Toni, a fantastic tapas bar that does brilliant sweetbreads - mollejas - a delicacy in many restaurants around the world, and here deliciously cooked with skill on the griddle.
And finally, dessert … we head to the most famous pastry shop in the city for the napolitana de crema. The perfect sweet end to a fabulous Madrid food tour. Siesta time!
Want to find those secret nun cookies? Head to Calle Codo (near Plaza de la Villa) and where you see the door with the sign Venta de Dulces, ring the top bell. Hours are Mon-Fri 0930-1300 then 16.30 - 18.30.
Here's the list of where we went:
1. El Riojano
2. Cerveriz
3. Mercado San Miguel (La Hora del Vermut was the stall)
4. Nuns
5. Mercado Jamon Iberico
6. Anciano Rey de los Vinos
7. Casa Revuelta
8. La Campana
9. Casa Toni
10. La Mallorquina

San Miguel de Allende, Mexican Colonial Property for Lease
Located in a gated enclave of ten luxury homes, Casa Grande’s private residence is an exquisite 3 bedroom, 3-1/2 bath secure retreat, just minutes from the activity of downtown San Miguel. The main house covers over 4,000 square feet of livable space including stone work, boveda ceilings, outdoor fountains, cupulas, Sautillo tile, outdoor gardens and terraces that make this designer home gorgeous. All our beds are super comfy with luxurious linens and plush bathroom towels.
The spectacular rooftop garden is over 3,000 square feet of uninterrupted views in all directions. It includes (all under cover) a full gourmet kitchen complete with GE Profile appliances (refrigerator, gas fired stove top, oven, dishwasher, microwave and two sinks both with garbage disposals), a professionally-designed gas-fired wood burning pizza oven, a circular bar with 10 custom made leather-padded bar chairs, a hot tub for eight people, and a full bathroom complete with glass topped shower. All counter tops are granite, cabinetry is mesquite wood curved to match the curved granite bar and the entire roof has slate tile flooring.
The balance of the roof is open air with custom made cushioned loungers, tables and chairs, gas-fire pit, gorgeous planters and potted plants; excellent for dining outside, entertaining a large party…or for a more intimate evening after a day of touring the many places to explore here in San Miguel.
This Mexican Colonial property is located in one of San Miguel's most distinguished, gated communities. Casa Grande is located 0.4 miles from Parque Juarez, 0.5 miles from the world famous Instituto Allende and 0.7 miles from the Parroquia and El Jardin (the town square), both are the center of the city. The walk to these areas are gently downhill (you can walk home or a taxi is $3 USD from anywhere in town). Juarez Park is also only a short walk as are many restaurants, shops, galleries and the famous historic Instituto Allende on Ancha de San Antonio Street.
The designer home is furnished with Mexican folk art, antiques, fine linens and other plush textiles. The home has a large, beautifully appointed living room, sunny dining room for eight with floor to ceiling glass windows and doors opening to an open air atrium complete with water fountain, loungers, table and chairs and the sounds of birds chirping daylong.
The large kitchen features stainless steel GE appliances and a heavy duty Viking industrial gas stove complete with grill and griddle. The kitchen includes wonderful cabinetry and hand-painted Mexican tile with plenty of prep areas and includes a separate maid’s sink, additional prep area and pantry space; truly a gourmets delight!!!
A laundry room with full size washer and dryer is located in the home immediately beyond the maid's kitchen.
The main house can sleep six with a king master suite and two bedrooms with queen beds. An additional inflatable queen size air mattress is available for 2 extra guests if needed. A 4th bedroom and additional casitas are located on the property as described at the bottom of this section.
The home includes four additional items of importance:
•Purified, pressurized water treatment systems so that there are no problems with drinking the water or having adequate water pressure to all users.
•Internet and TV access. Because all homes and hotels in SMA are built with stone and brick walls, such services can be spotty at best. To alleviate such problems, we have installed hard wire to each room and then broadcast Wi-Fi from that point forward in each room. We have three services coming into the property from the cable company divided by five servers in the house so that each user will receive at least 14 mbs on their devices.
•48” Samsung Smart TVs are provided to keep you tuned to your favorite streaming sites be it Netflix, YouTube or other providers.
•A monitored burglar alarm and perimeter security cameras are provided for your peace of mind.
Maid service is included twice per week. Additional service can be provided at additional cost and availability.
All rooms include ceiling fans and gas fire places. A US Vonage phone is available so you can call anywhere in the world free of charge…and your friends and family can reach you, too, free of charge.
As an added benefit, Lawnie & Michelle Sturdevant (the owners) live in a separate house located next door and are available at any time to assist you.
For more information, please email Lawnie or Michelle at sanmiguelproperty@gmail.com or call us at 281-769-1222
Why do people in Andalusia divorce more often? | VPRO Documentary
Why do people divorce more often than Spaniards from other regions? In love not everything is about roses, certainly not in Andalusia. But why are people in this region more likely to leave their partner? What is it that makes them divorce more often?
A year ago, Stef and his family still lived in Nicaragua, in a quiet area of the pleasant village of Masaya. But his street turned into a war zone when the country went into a deep crisis and President Daniel Ortega cracked down the protests. Stef searched for a place to stay and ended up with his wife and children in Andalusia. To find his way and get to know this part of Spain better, in this six-part series he writes letters to the inhabitants. Stef discovers Andalusia on the basis of those letters, but parallel to this story you follow his personal situation, which of course is strongly influenced by the crisis in Nicaragua.
Andalusia is the region with the most divorces of Spain. Stef wonders why this is and what a good reason is for the Andalusians to separate. In the meantime, Stef has been in Andalusia for eight months and the situation in Nicaragua has not changed. Stef's mother-in-law has flown back. It is now too dangerous for Stef's father-in-law to return. Another kind of divorce, somehow.
