The San Carlos Institute Celebrates the Life of Jose Marti and Cuba's Independence
May 17th -- 20th, 2012
The San Carlos Institute of Key West invites the community and the press to a four-day program in tribute of Jose Marti, Cuba's foremost patriot and poet, and to celebrate the 110th anniversary of Cuba's independence from Spain.
The San Carlos Institute, founded in 1871, served as cradle of Cuba's independence movement. Jose Marti launched the final drive for Cuba's independence from the San Carlos and affectionately referred to it as La Casa Cuba.
Highlights of the program include the following:
Musical performances by La Coral Cubana, a 40-voice choir, tracing the history of Cuba through its music, renowned soprano Virginia Alonso and violinist Andres Trujillo, and the 13-member band Tradicion Caribe.
The San Carlos will also host the world premiere of Jose Marti: A Musical Tribute, with pieces selected by Emilio Cueto, and performed by Jose Ramos, a distinguished Puerto Rican pianist and professor at The Catholic University of America.
There will also be special viewings of the WPBT award-winning documentary Jose Marti: Legacy of Freedom by film director Joe Cardona.
Distinguished guests will include former Governor and U.S. Senator Bob Graham, U.S. Congressman David Rivera, and U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (via satellite) among many others.

8:00 PM: Showing of the WPBT award-winning documentary Jose Marti: Legacy of Freedom in the institute's theater, followed by a Q & A session about Marti with film director Joe Cardona, historians and other experts. A fundraising cocktail reception in the museum's exhibit hall will follow.
Friday, May 18
8:00 PM: The San Carlos: history and architecture. Historians and architects on the importance of the Institute to Cuba and Florida. Tour of the building with a viewing of its exhibits, including the acclaimed Jose Marti exhibit donated by Florida International University.

Saturday, May 19
1:00 PM: Repeat showing of the documentary, Jose Marti: Legacy of Freedom
3:00 PM: Concert by the Coral Cubana, a 40-voice choir, tracing the history of Cuba through its music. Special performance by renowned soprano Virginia Alonso and violinist Andres Trujillo. (Admission: $10)
8:00 PM: World premiere of Jose Marti: A Musical Tribute. The concert includes pieces inspired by Marti, as well as pieces about some of his most famous poems. Emilio Cueto, a Washington, D.C.-based independent scholar, has conducted the research and selected the compositions, spanning over one hundred years and several countries. Jose Ramos, a distinguished Puerto Rican pianist and professor at The Catholic University of America, and two singers from the University Doctoral Program will perform the musical selections. (Admission: $25 per adult and $10 for students and children)
Sunday, May 20
1:30 PM: Mass at San Carlos in memory of San Carlos' Board Member, Bishop Agustin Roman, who passed away on April 11th of this year.
3:00 PM: Jose Marti: A Musical Tribute will be repeated. (Admission: $25 adults/$10 students and children)
5:00 PM: Musical celebration of Cuban Independence Day by the 13-member band, Tradicion Caribe. Duval Street will rock to the best of Cuba's music.

The San Carlos Institute is a Cuban heritage center and museum founded in 1871 by Cuban exiles who came to Key West to plan the campaign for Cuba's independence from Spain. The San Carlos Institute is a not for profit organization maintained by private donations and the work of volunteers.

It's very difficult. This is the fourth time in two years we have had to do this. It's very, very hard on the residents. They don't want to leave. These are people that have lived on this island on their lives... many of the Key West Conchs are not leaving under any circumstances. But it's very difficult, it's necessary. Unfortunately this new weather pattern has made it very difficult for us to operate here.

STORYLINE:
Thousands of residents have left the resort island of Key West in Florida after being ordered to evacuate, as Hurricane Wilma hurtled towards the state on Sunday.
The southern half of Florida's peninsula was under a hurricane warning on Sunday in anticipation of the Category 2 storm.
Emergency officials prepared rescue and relief plans as Hurricane Wilma started picking up speed like a rocket on a course toward Florida, moving at 160 kilometres per hour (100 miles per hour) at 1800 GMT.
Streets of the resort island of Key West in the gulf of Mexico, were virtually deserted as most people heeded the warnings and left the area.
Although still far from the state, Wilma's outer bands of rain had already caused street flooding in South Florida.
Tropical storm-force winds were expected to begin lashing the state late on Sunday and meteorologists said the heart of the storm was expected to roar across the state on Monday.
At the St. Mary of the Sea church on Key West island, nearly 100 faithful gathered for Sunday morning mass.
St. Mary of the Sea church is associated with the Lourdes Grotto, where for over 80 years the faithful have come to pray for relief from disasters, personal tragedy and spiritual fulfilment.
The grotto - meant to resemble its namesake in France - was built by a nun in 1922 to honour the hundreds who died when a nameless Category 4 storm devastated the area in 1919.
On Sunday, the grotto witnessed several prayers for deliverance from the impending hurricane and many lit candles in front of the Virgin Mary's statue.
About 160-thousand people in the state were under mandatory evacuation orders, including the entire population of the Florida Keys island chain, according to officials and Census data.
A hospital in the island city was also evacuated on Saturday.
