Pods with up to fifty family members live here and we see these intelligent orcas on 80% or more of our San Juan Islands kayak tours in some months. Our sea kayaking trips in the San Juan Islands are designed to visit the killer whales favorite feeding, traveling, and play areas. Sea Quest whale-watching kayak tours maximize your chances for an encounter with these awesome orcas!
San Juan Island kayaking tours include:
• Lowest prices for kayak tours in the San Juan Islands.
• Best routes for kayak orca watching in the United States.
• Kayak past stunning sea cliffs & lighthouses.

• Best, newest & safest kayaks & paddling gear.
San Juan Islands Orca Whale Watching Kayak Trips: The San Juan Islands of Washington are famous as the top orca whale watching location in the United States. The first park in the world dedicated to whale watching was created here. Our San Juan Island kayak tours are designed as orca whale watching kayak trips. Of all orca whale sightings in Washington state, over 95% occur in just one relatively small area that forms the western edge of the San Juan Islands. This is where the killer whales do nearly all of their hunting and playing. And it's the exact location where Sea Quest kayak trips take you orca whale watching!
Our sea kayaking routes are planned to maximize your chances to kayak with orcas. We don't see them every time, but about 2/3rds of our kayak trip guests enjoy killer whale sightings. Remember, these are wild orca whales and they don't perform on schedule, so we can't guarantee success on every kayak trip! Be sure to check out our blog for monthly reports on how the whales are doing and our recent whale watching success rates.
Sadly, there are companies that advertise kayaking with the orcas in the San Juan Islands that never kayak in the primary orca whale watching area. It is very unlikely that you will be killer whale watching on their kayaking trips. They may see the orca whales once a month or week, but we often see them several times a day!
Remember, Sea Quest has been leading kayak tours for over 20 years and our San Juan Island kayak trips are guided by actual biologists and environmental scientists that can tell you about the lives of these amazing animals. Our record of success is the best!
Kayak Whale Watching in the San Juan Islands: Many people ask us if it is safe to kayak with orcas. The answer is an emphatic YES! These intelligent whales have never injured a human in the wild. (Only ill-treated captive orca whales have harmed people.) Orca whales are extremely aware of their surroundings and NEVER collide with kayaks. They approach kayaks with the same respect that we offer them. The killer whales of the San Juan Islands are the most studied whales in the world; they in turn have observed humans for at least six thousand years. Stable family groups, called pods, represent several generations and include grandmothers (the pod leaders), adolescents, infants, and huge bulls. Each family member is recognized by its distinctive markings and can live as long as a human. Much of what is known about the orca whale's highly-organized social life has been learned from the resident pods you can watch from kayaks in the San Juan Islands of Washington.
The beautiful San Juan Islands of Washington state are the most popular summer kayaking tour destination in the world. Friday Harbor is easily accessed from Seattle, and the San Juan Islands lie within the Puget Sound and straddle the US-Canada border where Washington meets British Columbia. The rural archipelago encompasses several hundred islands, rocks, and reefs. Hundreds of miles of twisting shorelines are perfect for exploration on sea kayak tours. The sheltered waters of the San Juans are the perfect place for beginners to kayak with killer whales.

Explore Washington Recreation: Patos Island, San Juan Islands
Welcome to the northwestern-most point in the lower 48 states! Patos Island is a wild and remote 200-acre island in the beautiful Salish Sea. The mountains of Canada and the spectacular Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges provide scenic backdrops to this special area.
Recreational activities include hiking, camping, boating, sea kayaking, watching wildlife, and viewing wildflowers along the beaches, wooded areas, and at overlooks. The BLM cooperatively manages the area with Washington State Parks.
Patos Island Lighthouse, built in 1893, stands on the western-most end of the island, providing light and reference to mariners.
Know Before You Go:
Patos Island is open YEAR ROUND.
Limited mooring buoys and campsites in Active Cove are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Patos Island is only accessible by watercraft.
Washington State Park fees apply.
Patos Island is very primitive and there is no fresh water available on site.
On Oct. 7, 2014, San Juan County became the first County in the U.S. designated as a voluntary “Leave No Trace” area. Please help and practice LNT.
Patos Island State Park is located 5 miles northwest of Orcas Island in San Juan County. It is accessible only by boat and there is no commercial ferry service to the park. The nearest launch sites are at Point Roberts Marina (13 miles north), Blaine Harbor (11 miles northeast), and Squallicum Harbor in Bellingham (24 miles east).
Keepers of the Patos Light is a nonprofit partner group that operates a small interpretive museum during the summer weekends from June through September, based on weather and available volunteers.

A trip to Orcas Island in the San Juans
We decided to take a camping trip to Moran State Park on Orcas Island in the San Juan Island group. It is about an hour and a half drive from our home in Clearview to the ferry landing at Anacortes and then a little over an hour ferry ride to Orcas Island. It was raining hard when we left home at 7 am but the sky gradually cleared as we made our way to Anacortes and there was some blue sky and sunshine by the time the ferry boarded. Along the way the ferry captain announced an Orca whale sighting and stopped the ferry about a quarter mile away from the pod. Everyone who was not already outside flooded to the front viewing decks and oohed and aahed as the Orcas broke water. My GoPro was not good enough to capture them, but we saw a number of fins break the surface and spumes shooting into the air. We sat dead in the water for ten or fifteen minutes before continuing our journey. It was a wonderful experience all around.

Orcas Island, Washington | Camping at Moran State Park | May 2017
My family's magical trip to Orcas Island, Washington. Orcas is one of the main islands in the San Juan Islands chain at the very northwest tip of the contiguous United States in Washington. It is only accessible by ferry from Anacortes, WA.
We camped at Moran State Park on Cascade Lake. Entire island was in full bloom when we visited in May of 2017.
I don't usually post public videos but I wanted to share Orcas Island and Moran State Park for those considering.
Disclaimer about music: I purchased all the music by Hammock used in this video. It was what we listened to while visiting Orcas Island.

Washington Park, Anacortes, WA, USA
Beautiful views of Guemes Channel and Burrows Bay as seen from Washington Park and also the park's famous leaning tree (one of Washington state's most photographed tree) in the historic town of Anacortes on Fidalgo Island in Skagit County, Washington, USA during our trip on Sep. 3, 2011.
Washington Park is located on a peninsula at the western tip of Fidalgo Island. The 220-acre city park features camping, a boat launch, and day use picnic sites. The park juts into Rosario Strait on the western edge of Anacortes, offering territorial views. A scenic 2.3-mile one-way loop road winds through the park's forested hills and meadows with views of the San Juan Islands and Olympic Mountains. The park offers sweeping views of Guemes Channel on one side and Burrows Bay on the other.
At Sunset Beach, on the north shore, there is a boat launch, restrooms, reservable picnic shelter, playground and open play area. There are 75 campsites, restrooms, showers and laundry services in the overnight area. Picnic sites and car pullouts provide beach access along Green Point, the west shoreline. The loop road is used by cars, joggers, bicyclists and walkers.
Anacortes is the gateway to the San Juan and Vancouver Islands. Downtown Anacortes has over 125 life-sized murals painted by local resident Bill Mitchell. He painted the murals over the last 25 years from historical photographs. His art is on display all over Downtown buildings with depictions of historic scenes. Pick up a free mural map at the Visitor Center located at 819 Commercial Avenue as it is a wonderful way to discover Anacortes.
Anacortes is located 18 miles west of Mount Vernon and about one hour drive from Bellingham to the north and Seattle to the south.
Driving directions to the park: From I-5 take Highway 20 West. Enter Anacortes on Spur 20 and take Commercial Avenue to 12th Street. Turn left on 12th and follow the signs (about 3 miles) to Washington Park.

Friday Harbor Washington - San Juan Islands Puget Sound
Friday Harbor is a favorite destination for many visiting the San Juan Islands. Reachable by Washington State Ferry, Private Boat, or Float Plane, Friday Harbor is a great place to catch a Whale Watching Excursion boat, go on a fishing charter or to make as a home base for visiting day trips to nearby Orcas Island, and Lopez Island.
The Washington State Ferry makes it easy to bring your car from the mainland so you can explore the Islands and you can also continue on to Victoria on Vancouver Island in Canada. Friday Harbor is the only incorporated city in the San Juan Islands and its also the county seat.
No visit to the San Juan Islands is complete without a visit to Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor with shares the same island as Friday Harbor.
