San Juan County Road 2 - Silverton, Colorado
For the full trail guide please visit:
San Juan County Road 2 is a connector road between the town of Silverton and Animas Forks. It provides access to numerous campgrounds, both public and commercial, and popular four-wheel-drive roads such as Burns Gulch, Maggie Gulch, Picayne Gulch, California Pass, Engineer Pass and Cinnamon Pass (the Alpine Loop) . Animas Forks, an historic uninhabited town, is an attraction unto itself. Numerous buildings have been restored to near-period condition, and plentiful interpretive markers describe history of the structures and the persons who once inhabited them. Ample parking is available at Animas Forks, and there are public restrooms on the south end of the parking area.

Silverton Colorado Saves its Newspaper
In these times of newspaper closings and sales, the Silverton Standard & the Miner has gotten a reprieve. When the owner of the Colorado newspaper, which has been part of the community for more than a century, decided to close it, the editor came up with an unusual idea: Ask the local historical society to take over the paper. And the society did, saving the Standards rich history and connection to the people it serves.

ABOUT US
Welcome to Grand Adventure, a YouTube channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, nearly always filmed in stunning 4K.
We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the western U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and our dogs Zoe and Maggie are avid boondockers, so you'll seldom find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds. We'll provide tips and insight on equipping and maintaining your RV, trip planning and travel videos to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

Picayne and Placer Gulches 4wd Trail- Silverton, Colorado
For the full 4wd trail guide please visit:
Picayne and Placer Gulch is a gorgeous 4wd route offering scenic vistas of the San Juan Mountains and traverses an area rich with mining history. This area provides gorgeous wildflowers in the peak season of late July and early August which enhances the already spectacular vistas found in all directions. Some of the best-preserved mine structures found in Colorado can be found along this trail. The Sound Democrat Mill is one of the finest examples and still possesses all of its machinery still in place, from its stamp batteries to its Wilfley tables. This allows visitors the ability to see step by step how precious minerals were processes out of the raw ore that entered the mill. More information on the process of gold mining can be found Here.

Bent Elbow 60.avi
This 60 second ad was produced by Patrick Swonger of TV-11 for the Bent Elbow Restaurant & Hotel on Blair Street in Silverton, Colorado in June of 2010. The ad utilizes 35mm stills taken with a Nikon 6 mpx camera and edited with a Pinnacle Studio 14 software. The ad-lib character voice-over was done on the first take by Patrick Swonger. This ad shows that an effective commercial can be produced by a single person on a very low to no budget.
Montezuma Colorado Ghost Town
Traveling through the mountains visiting old ghost towns. I videotapped an old school house that was used from the 1800's to as late as 1950. Desks and books are still in the school house.
Internet research:
MONTEZUMA SCHOOLHOUSE
5375 Webster St., Montezuma
National Register 1/9/207, 5ST.1043
The school building served as the educational center for this high mountain mining community from its construction in 1884 up until school consolidation brought about its closure in 1958. The building embodies the distinctive characteristics of the one-room schoolhouse building type. Its purpose is easily discerned by its form. The school exhibits such typical features as a front gabled roof, bell tower, vestibule, tall narrow windows, and associated privies.

Seeing Potential, Creating Change
Philanthropy was slow to catch on in Colorado's earliest days. During the Gold Rush of 1859, the state attracted more takers than givers. Most just wanted to get and get out. Some who stayed prospered. Over the years, fortunes were made in industries that helped shape Colorado. Some of those legacies are the many Colorado foundations that collectively invest $700 million a year in grants to nonprofits. This short documentary highlights foundation history, as well as two programs that benefit from grants: Denver's Road Home program and Organic Seed Alliance in Pueblo County. Narrated by Colorado historian Tom Noel. Produced by Joanne Kelley, Sonya Doctorian, Abel Wurmnest and Matthew Roberts for the Colorado Association of Funders.
Ouray Colorado to Silverton Colorado along the Million Dollar Highway
We will take you on a five minute road trip between Ouray, Colorado and Silverton, Colorado along the Million Dollar Highway. We took this day trip while camping out at the Ouray RV Park and Cabins. You will see old mine shafts that date back to the 1800's Tailings from the old mines. Miners houses and some very beautiful country.
The Switzerland of America - along the back roads and Scenic Byways: you can see vistas where old Hollywood westerns were filmed and explore high country ghost towns that were once booming mining cities. Ouray is also known as “The Jeeping Capital of the World.” Regardless of the season or the purpose of your visit, a trip to the famous, sulfur-free Ouray Hot Springs Pool is always a treat. With nearly one-million gallons of naturally heated water from deep in the earth, the hot springs pool has been a soothing destination for generations.
The Million Dollar Highway delivers jaw-dropping vista after vista. It was cut from the side of the mountain and became know as the Million Dollar Highway. It's one of the most scenic drives in the USA. There are several legends, though, including that it cost a million dollars a mile to build it, this is in the 1800's and that its fill dirt contains a million dollars in gold ore.
Silverton is where the video ends, a video on Silverton coming soon.
