La Fortaleza and San Juan National Historic Site in ... (UNESCO/NHK)
Between the 15th and 19th centuries, a series of defensive structures was built at this strategic point in the Caribbean Sea to protect the city and the Bay of San Juan. They represent a fine display of European military architecture adapted to harbour sites on the American continent.

Puerto Rico, Road Trip to San Juan National Historic Site
San Juan National Historic Site is national park which protect and interprets colonial-era forts such as castillo san felipe del morro, bastions, powder houses, and three fourts of the old city wall.
Fort San Cristobal in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico
— Fort San Cristobal is the largest military structure built by the Spaniards in the New World. The original fort was completed in 1783 and it covered an area of 27 acres. Today the fort is part of the San Juan National Historic Site, which includes Fort San Cristobal, Fort San Felipe del Morro, Fort San Juan de la Cruz (better known locally as El Cañuelo) and three fourths of the original city wall. The other third of the city wall was demolished in 1897, along with a significant part of Fort San Cristobal, to help ease the flow of traffic in and out of the walled city. Even so, Fort San Cristobal is still the largest military fortification built by the Spaniards in the New World.
The main objective of Fort San Cristobal was to protect the city of San Juan from land attacks coming from the east, while Fort San Felipe del Morro and Fort San Juan de la Cruz protected the entrance to San Juan Bay.
Spanish forts in Puerto Rico were built using the latest technology of the day. And while they seem simple today, there are actually many engineering, architecture and military strategy tecniques built into the forts that still surprise the visitor. Be sure to ask your friendly park ranger about the construction of the city walls and the tunnels at Fort San Cristobal and Fort San Felipe del Morro. There's a lot more there than you might think.
The San Juan National Historic Site was added to the UNESCO Register of World Heritage Sites in 1983. It is operated by the United States National Park Service. For more information call 787-729-6777.

San Juan National Historic Site!
San Juan National Historic Site preserves stories of great ambition and aspirations. Countries fought for control of this tiny yet strategic island for centuries. Generations of soldiers have lived and worked within the forts. Visitors today are as inspired by these stories as they are by the beauty of the architecture and the ingenuity of design and engineering of this World Heritage Site.

National Historic Site- Old San Juan Puerto Rico
Old San Juan is such a beautiful place. While staying at the Hotel El Convento we walked the blue cobblestone streets to San Juan's Historic sites. Both of these Forts are within walking distance from the Hotel. Castillo de San Falipe del Morro was built in the 16th century by Spanish and the Castillo de San Cristo'bal is the largest Spanish fort built in the New World. Grade A-F, I give this an A.

Old San Juan, Puerto Rico - Castillo San Felipe del Morro HD (2013)
Castillo San Felipe del Morro also known as Fort San Felipe del Morro or Morro Castle, is a 16th-century citadel located in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Lying on the northwestern-most point of the islet of Old San Juan, Castillo San Felipe del Morro is named in honor of King Philip II of Spain. The fortification, also referred to as el Morro or 'the promontory,' was designed to guard the entrance to the San Juan Bay, and defend the Spanish colonial port city of San Juan from seaborne enemies.
In 1983, the el Castillo was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations in conjunction with the San Juan National Historic Site. Over two million visitors a year explore the castillo, making it one of Puerto Rico's leading tourist attractions. Facing the structure, on the opposite side of the bay, a smaller fortification known as El Cañuelo complemented the castillo's defense of the entrance to the bay.

Old San Juan, Puerto Rico - Castillo de San Cristóbal HD (2013)
The Castillo de San Cristóbal is a Spanish fort in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was built by Spain to protect against land based attacks on the city of San Juan. It is part of San Juan National Historic Site.
Castillo de San Cristóbal is the largest fortification built by the Spanish in the New World. When it was finished in 1783, it covered about 27 acres of land and basically wrapped around the city of San Juan. Entry to the city was sealed by San Cristóbal's double gates. After close to one hundred years of relative peace in the area, part of the fortification (about a third) was demolished in 1897 to help ease the flow of traffic in and out of the walled city.
This fortress was built on a hill originally known as the Cerro de la Horca or the Cerro del Quemadero, which was changed to Cerro de San Cristóbal in celebration of the Spanish victories ejecting English and Dutch interlopers from the island of this name in the Lesser Antilles, then forming part of the insular territorial glacis of Puerto Rico.
