Peru 2012: Andahuaylillas
On our way to Cusco we also got the chance to visit the stunning church of St Peter at Andahuaylillas, known as the Sistine Chapel of the Americas. It was extremely impressive and has a fascinating history, going back to 1580. Unfortunately photography is not allowed inside the church so this video is much less interesting than I would have wished it to be. :-( But you can see some more pictures here:

Neglect, rain threatening 'Sistine Chapel of the Andes'
(14 Feb 2019) LEADIN:
Neglect and heavy rains are threatening one of South America's oldest churches in Curahuara de Carangas, Bolivia.
Many residents in the impoverished Aymara town have migrated to bigger cities in the past decades, a flow that's disrupted the traditional, communal system for maintaining the church.
STORYLINE:
A buttress supporting an adobe (mud brick) wall has collapsed and grass overgrows the patio of this fourth-century old church.
Inside its dazzling murals, depicting biblical scenes and remote location high atop a Bolivian plateau have earned it the name the Sistine Chapel of the Andes.
On the outside, Curahuara de Carangas' church looks like anything but Vatican City's Sistine Chapel.
Its rough walls of mud brick and straw give it the appearance of a humble, rural chapel.
But when visitors open its doors and enter, they're overwhelmed by the brilliantly-colored paintings that cover its walls, ceilings and cupola.
''For me, it is a pleasure to be in charge of one of the temples (church) that South America has, says priest Rafael Choque.
In fact, this is the only one that has those murals, but it is a great responsibility, because the church needs monthly maintenance, almost annual in every way.''
The biblical murals include depictions of the Garden of Eden, the Last Supper and the Final Judgment all done by local Aymara painters. The only blank space is part of a roof that collapsed in 1901.
Historians say missionaries wanted to teach the indigenous Aymara Bolivians about the passion of Christ, heaven and hell.
The church's central dome features a triumphant Christ and his 12 apostles. Another painting shows the Archangel Gabriel crushing a demon with his foot.
The painters, who didn't record their names, combined elements of Andean culture with biblical paintings made using natural dyes.
The church's largest mural shows the reign of Christ in heaven with his apostles and saints. But two Andean elements stand out - the sun and the moon.
In the painting of the Last Supper, Jesus has a roasted guinea pig - a popular Andean dish - on his plate.
Lions are drawn with human faces, apparently because the Ayamara painters had never seen a lion's face.
''There is nothing comparable in the way of the Plata to Curawa of Carangas, says Carmen loza, a historian and head of the Culture Ministry's Intangible Heritage Unit.
There is a mural painted that have been developed by native painters, there is no European intervention, but here are many periods inside the church.
Facing an emergency, officials from the Roman Catholic Church, Bolivia's culture ministry and the local government are meeting to figure out a plan to save the church, built between 1570 and 1608.
While no plan has been formalized, two architects arrived last week to look at the damage and the government has a responsibility to maintain the Curahuara church since it is registered as a national monument.
''If we talk about the structural issue, at first sight it does not have damage, it is still in good condition, says architect Francisco Poma.
The church's location on a high desert plateau at an altitude of almost 3,900 meters (12,800 feet) and 170 kilometers (105 miles) southwest of La Paz at first does not seem to make sense.
But at the time of colonization, Curahuara de Carangas was an important indigenous population center and for the colonists it lay on vital route linking the silver and gold mines of Potosi and La Paz to Pacific ports in Chile and Peru.

08:00am – Andahuaylillas “Sistine Chapel of America” | 3122 m. a.s.l.
There, you’ll find the church of San Pedro Apostol de Andahuaylillas, built by the Jesuits in the 16th century. Like other Spanish and religious constructions of the time, it was built on top of a huaca, or sacred place for the Incas. Made out of adobe and brick, the church is a small structure consisting of one nave, apse and bell tower. But there’s a reason why it’s known as the Sistine Chapel of America.
10:30am – Raqchi “Temple of Wiracocha” | 3450 m.a.s.l.
The most important building inside the complex is the “Wiracocha temple” that according to the old chroniclers was built by the Inca Wiracocha in honour to the Superior God invisible for the Andean people: “Apu Kon Titi Wiracocha”. The “temple of Wiracocha” is a great construction for that age. Architectonically it is classified as “Kallanka”, that is, a high building completely covered with straw (wood and “ichu”). Externally it is 92 meters long (302 feet) and 25.25 meter wide (83 feet).
11:40am – Sicuani Buffet Lunch | 3552 m.a.s.l.
Sicuani is a relatively large highland town. The town is a major intersection, with the road to Puno/Arequipa passing through here. This town is surrounded by some very pretty hills. Afterwards, you have a buffet lunch in our exclusive restaurant with family atmosphere.
15:00pm – Pukara | 3900 m.a.s.l.
Pukara was the first regional population center in the northern Lake Titicaca Basin during the Late Formative Period (500 BC- AD 200), providing valuable insights into the origins of Andean civilization in the highlands. During its peak it covered over a square kilometer and housed thousands of bureaucrats, priests, artisans, farmers, herders, and possibly warriors. The Pukara style is identified by impressive monolithic sculptures with a variety of geometric, zoomorphic, and anthropomorphic images plus intricate, multi-colored pottery in a variety of ritual and domestic forms.

Magical Peru #18: Travelling by Bus From Puno to Cusco [Part 1 of 2]
Magical Peru:
Please watch the second part of this bus trip here
We woke up very early in Puno to hop on a Cruz del Sur bus heading to Cusco!
It is a touristic service so we stopped a few times in small towns and archaeological sites, and the bus trip took the whole day.
The first stop was on Pukará (or Pucará), a little but ancient pueblo, with a 2,400 years-history.
A couple of hours later we stopped by the border between the departments of Puno and Cusco, at 4,338 meters above sea level.
On the next video we pass by the Inca ruins of Rachi and the San Pedro de Andahuaylillas, the Sistine Chapel of the Americas, before arriving in Cusco!
Puno is in southeastern Peru, located on the shore of Lake Titicaca. It is the capital city of the Puno Region and the Puno Province with a population of approximately 100,000. The city was established in 1668 by viceroy Pedro Antonio Fernández de Castro as capital of the province of Paucarcolla with the name San Juan Bautista de Puno. Puno has several churches dating back from the colonial period; they were built to service the Spanish population and evangelize the natives. Lake Titicaca (Spanish: Lago Titicaca) is a lake in the Andes on the border of Peru and Bolivia. By volume of water, it is the largest lake in South America. It is often called the highest navigable lake in the world, with a surface elevation of 3,812 m (12,507 ft).
Cusco (often spelled Cuzco) is in southeastern Peru, near the Urubamba Valley of the Andes mountain range. It is the capital of the Cusco Region as well as the Cuzco Province. In 2007, the city had a population of 358,935. Located on the eastern end of the Knot of Cuzco, its elevation is around 3,400 m (11,200 ft). Cusco was the site of the historic capital of the Inca Empire and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1983 by UNESCO. It is a major tourist destination and receives almost 2 million visitors a year. It is designated as the Historical Capital of Peru by the Constitution of Peru.
When we first arrived in Peru, we spent a couple of weeks studying Spanish in Lima (please watch the vlog Living in Lima) then we headed to the North of Peru and visited Trujillo, Chiclayo and some archaeological sites, such as tombs, pyramids and ancient cities. On the South of Peru, our first stop was in Arequipa, and then we headed to Chivay and its thermal pools (La Calera hot springs) and the Colca Canyon, to do a canyon tour. Now, we go to the country side: Puno, Lake Titicaca, Cusco, Machu Pichu and so on...
On the next video we continue our journey to Cusco, but not before visiting the Inca ruins of Rachi and the San Pedro de Andahuaylillas, the Sistine Chapel of the Americas!
