Singalila National Park is a national park of India located on the Singalila Ridge at an altitude of more than 7000 feet above sea level, in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal. It is well known for the trekking route to Sandakphu that runs through it.
The park was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1986, and was made an Indian national park in 1992. The region had long been used as the trekking route from Manebhanjang to Sandakphu (the highest peak of West Bengal) and Phalut.
Mammals: The park has a number of small mammals including the red panda, leopard cat, barking deer, yellow-throated marten, wild boar, pangolin and pika. Larger mammals include the Himalayan black bear, leopard, clouded leopard, serow and takin. Tigers occasionally wander into the area, but do not have a large enough prey base to make residence in these forests feasible.
Birds: The park is a birder's delight with over 120 species recorded including many rare and exotic species like the scarlet minivet, kalij pheasant, blood pheasant, satyr tragopan, brown and fulvous parrotbills, rufous-vented tit, and Old World babblers like the fire-tailed myzornis and the golden-breasted fulvetta. The park is also on the flyway of many migratory birds.
Reptiles and amphibians: The endangered Himalayan newt frequents the region and congregates around the lakes of Jore Pokhri and Sukhiapokhri and nearby lakes to reproduce. Jore Pokhri and Sukhiapokhri are within 20 km of the park boundary and are protected wildlife sanctuaries.

Red Panda Trip to Singalila National Park
Singalila National Park is an East Himalayan Broadleaf Forest that is the Habitat of the Red Panda . I made a five day trip here along with friends and stayed at Habre's Nest in Kaikatta Nepal , a charming homestay passionately run by Shantanu Prasad, a conservationist and Wildlife researcher . A group of Trackers meticulously combed for the Panda and let us have a good sighting of this adorable creature . A capsule of our Trip is presented in this Video

When people hear about Darjeeling, most think of the famous tea plantations. If they know more about the area, they might think of Darjeeling as a jumping off point for mountain treks in Sikkim. Little do people know that just a short drive from Darjeeling lie some of the greatest trails in India. Several days of hiking/walking/trekking around Darjeeling will leave you with a positive lasting impression of this natural dreamland.
Where else in the world can you get a sweeping view of four out of the five highest peaks in the world? From the summit of Sandakphu (3636 meters / 11,929 feet), Mount Everest (8848 meteres), Kanchenjunga (8586 meters), Lhotse (8516 meters), and Makalu (8481 meters) can be seen in all their majesty. Each of our treks visit Sandakhpu – the highlight of trekking in Darjeeling.
Singalila National Park is a nature lover’s paradise. Feel the cool mountain air as you are surrounded by rhododendron, orchid, pine and bamboo trees. In fact, there are over 600 varieties of orchids in the area! These lush forests are home to a diverse group of wildlife. Dispersed along the trails, you might run into the elusive red panda, leopard, barking deer, Himalayan black bar, serow, takin, and countless other wonderful species.
As is the case with all treks, you will have an authentic cultural experience with the locals in each passing village. Eat the same food as those who live in the area, while learning about their customs, culture, and everyday lifestyle. The mountain views are part of the adventure, but spending time with Gurung, Rai, Limbu, and other fascinating ethnic groups adds much cultural value to the journey. Also, nothing beats finishing a long day of trekking and being greeted with a hot plate of dal bhaat (traditional meal) and a glass of chhang (local rice beer).

The Kanchenjunga cluster is famously called The Sleeping Buddha, thanks to its appearance. Mt. Kumbhakarna forms the head and face of Buddha, while Kanchenjunga forms the upper body. The other peaks that make up The Sleeping Buddha are Kokthang, Rathong, Frey, Kabru South, Kabru North, Simvo, Mt. Pandim, Tenzingkhang, Japanu, Narsing.
