STORYLINE:
An explosion targeted a coalition convoy on Monday and wounded two Afghan boys near a US base north of the Afghan capital, officials said.
An Afghan official claimed a suicide car bomber carried out the attack, but a US military spokesman said a roadside bomb exploded and damaged one coalition vehicle.
An investigation is under way.
The attack took place about one kilometre (less than a mile) outside Bagram Air Field, the main US military base in Afghanistan, according to a district official.
He said a suicide car-bomb attacker detonated his explosives-packed Toyota Corolla near the convoy, which was heading toward Kabul.
The car was turned into a charred, twisted hunk of metal and the attacker's body was blown into pieces.
Two boys riding by on a bicycle were wounded, a Transportation Ministry employee who witnessed the attack said.
The two victims were in a stable condition, and taken to the military hospital at Bagram.
A US military spokesman said a roadside bomb placed in a pothole exploded, damaging a coalition sport utility vehicle.
No coalition personnel were wounded.
Soon after the attack, dozens of US soldiers and Afghan police cordoned off the area around the destroyed car.
Militants have been launching an increasing number of attacks across Afghanistan during recent months, including the use of suicide and roadside bombs.
