How Dollar Stores Really Make Their Money
Every year, dollar stores see higher and higher earnings, but how can a store that seems like it's giving things away turn itself into a multi-billion-dollar enterprise? The answer is simple: that dollar isn't always the great deal it appears to be. Here are their secrets.
Whether times are good or bad, you can still count on people to flock to dollar stores because they have the one thing everyone loves: convenience. Sales for Dollar General are always on the upswing, with the chain seeing an increase of 3.7 percent between 2017 and 2018, regardless of the state of the economy. Take it from Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos, who had this to say about their regular customers:
We have seen no sign of trade out or trade up from our core customers. Even in a good economy, [they are] still looking for value and convenience.
So, basically, no matter how much money people have, they still want something that bigger grocery stores can't give them. Dollar stores are not just convenient because their items are cheaper, but also because there seems to be one on every corner — and that makes them perfect for a quick fill-in trip between your weekly grocery runs. These stores are also typically smaller than the ones in a big chain like Walmart, which means that you can usually get in and out with your emergency bag of dog food, a handful of snacks, or supplies for your kid's art project in just a couple of minutes. The fact that most people are on to this, means dollar stores are always making money — even if customers buy just a few things.

Portland food and travel playlist
Portland is a city located in the U.S. state of Oregon, near the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers. As of the 2010 Census, it had a population of 583,776, estimated to have reached 587,865 in 2012 making it the 28th most populous city in the United States. Portland is Oregon's most populous city, and the third most populous city in the Pacific Northwest region, after Seattle, Washington, and Vancouver, British Columbia. Approximately 2,289,800 people live in the Portland metropolitan area (MSA), the 19th most populous MSA in the United States.
Portland was incorporated in 1851 near the end of the Oregon Trail and is the county seat of Multnomah County. The city has a commission-based government headed by a mayor and four other commissioners as well as Metro, a distinctive regional government. The city is noted for its superior land-use planning and investment in light rail.Because of its public transportation networks and efficient land-use planning, Portland has been referred to as one of the most environmentally friendly, or green, cities in the world.
Located in the Marine west coast climate region, Portland has a climate marked by both warm, dry summers and wet, cool-to-chilly winter days. This climate is ideal for growing roses. For more than a century, Portland has been known as the City of Roses, with many rose gardens -- most prominently the International Rose Test Garden. The city is also known for its abundant outdoor activities, liberal political values, and beer and coffee enthusiasm. Portland is home to a collection of independent microbreweries, microdistilleries and food carts that contribute to the unofficial but widely utilized[citation needed] slogan Keep Portland Weird.

Newfoundland explorations continue, as I travel east beyond Twillingate. The coast yields everything from sandy beaches to towering cliffs. I experience Trinity, enjoy a brewery, and discover some amazing coffee shops. An evening hike on the Skerwink trail, and wrap up the week at the Bonavista lighthouse.

Medical marijuana is legal in 20 states and the District of Columbia, but there are still use cases that are very controversial, like medical marijuana for children. Some claim it's a wonder drug for epilepsy, severe autism, and even to quell the harsh side effects of chemotherapy, while others decry pumping marijuana into still-growing bodies. We went to the small town of Pendleton, Oregon, where medical marijuana is legal, to visit Mykayla Comstock, an eight-year-old leukemia patient who takes massive amounts of weed to treat her illness. Her family, and many people we met along the way, believe not only in the palliative aspects of the drug, but also in marijuana's curative effect—that pot can literally shrink tumors.

Finding Good Crappie Fishing Spots
Jason made a point in the fall and winter to look for new crappie fishing spots with his electronics. He started in some productive arms of the lake and idled along break lines looking for brush piles with fish.
These creek channel edges are often where fishermen like to drop their brush piles. So Jason scanned with Lowrance HDS 3D Structure Scan for likely looking spots and brush piles until he found schools of crappie holding on them.
Once he saw a good school of fish on a brush pile, he stopped and fished it. He would cast a jig over the top, when they quit biting that, he would pitch to the piles from a closer distance, and finally he would get right on top of them and fish vertically on the pile.
He had one of the best fall/winter periods for crappie fishing in recent years by getting out and hunting for fish more with his electronics.

Portland’s Black Belt: Motives and Means in Albina Real Estate, 1940–1990
Recorded on Monday, May 22, 2017 at McMenamins Kennedy School, Portland, Oregon.
Presented by Dr. Karen J. Gibson
In 1960, Portland was the second-most segregated city on the West Coast, behind Los Angeles. Four of five Black residents lived in the Albina District. This presentation explores how the real estate industry, public officials, and citizens justified that spatial segregation. It traces the private- and public-sector mechanisms utilized to confine and re-shape Black settlement within Albina. A major motive for segregation was to enable financial exploitation of Black homeowners and renters, allowing housing-industry manipulators to extract wealth from the Black community.
Dr. Karen J. Gibson is an Associate Professor in the Nohad A. Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning at Portland State University. Her scholarship seeks to answer questions about the political economy of racial economic inequality in the urban setting. Her publications have appeared in Cities, Feminist Economics, Transforming Anthropology, the Journal of Planning Education and Research, and the Oregon Historical Quarterly.

Permaculture Convergence | Inland Northwest
The Permaculture Convergence, Inland Northwest will be held at the MiVoden Retreat Center - Hayden Lake, ID. Enjoy this gathering of the permaculture community.
The 2013 INPC will be held at the MiVoden Retreat Center on Hayden Lake, Idaho. The camp is a 35-minute drive north of I-90. Will Kearns and Sheila Grace visited several camps recently on INPC'S behalf and MiVoden was the best choice. MiVoden is a summer camp facility which has many attributes for our event. They have a large commercial kitchen which we can staff and bring in our own food. There is a large, beautiful dining room with a breathtaking view of the lake which can hold everyone at once, plus another huge room adjacent to it for plenary sessions. There is ample space for tenting and for RVs. There are small cabins for people who wish indoor accommodations. The camp is right on the Hayden Lake with a sandy beach, canoes, etc. The water in mid-September is still warm. There's also a great outdoor stage/ gathering area, a heated indoor pool area, a hot tub, rooms with digital presentation capabilities. If you'd like to look at some photos go to:
They are into growing food and we all feel that it is a good fit to have the INPC at MiVoden. We will give them some permaculture ideas to think about.
This year's INPC will be different than INPC I and II, which were held respectively at the Spokane Falls Community College in Spokane and the University of Montana Conference Center in Missoula. One big change in 2013 is that everyone will be able to stay on site so that there is more time for interaction. The rural camp is close to nature and we get to go swimming, take plant walks, etc.
Another change is the emphasis is switching from conference to convergence. The first two INPCs were conferences that focused on education, workshops and presentations for permaculturists and the general public. The 3rd INPC will be a convergence of people who are already into permaculture and there will be more information on movement building such as permaculture education, permaculture consulting, networking, how to set up and run local groups, etc. There will also be how-to workshops with practical information. We would love to see people do demonstrations and hands-on activities. The convergence is for people who have completed permaculture design courses as well as people who are excited about permaculture. Permaculture people from around the Inland Northwest are invited. Idaho, Montana, eastern Washington, eastern Oregon, and southern interior British Columbia.
Let's share information, collaborate, synthesize, synergize and have fun!
Our next step is to pull together a team of people to organize this year's INPC. We will need some on-the-ground people in the Couer d'Alene/Hayden Lake area but team members can be from around the region. Would you like to be on the team?
