Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan ( Patna Zoo) at bailey road Patna is 90 km from my native village. It is Spread over 100 acre and Unlike most of the Indian zoo it is not crowded and animals are not confined into small cages. Most of the enclosures are big and animals appears to be healthy. This zoo is successful in breeding many captive wild animals and got world attention after successful breeding of rhinoceros. Zoo is also having a lake, Aquarium , snake house , train, restaurant and garden.

Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park is famous for captive Royal Bengal Tiger in its normal and white variant. At present Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park has four white and two normal colour Royal Bengal Tiger.
The history of Royal Bengal Tiger at Patna Zoo began in the year 1975 when Delhi Zoo provided one male tiger named MOTI. In the year 1980, Govt. of Assam gave two female tigress of wild origin. Name of these two tigresses were BULBORANI and FAUZI. After getting two female partners, Moti started breeding with these two female and the first tiger cub (female) born on 01.01.1983 from Bulborani which led to start of conservation breeding of tiger at Patna Zoo.
Till now Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park has provided some tigers to Ranchi Zoo. Several tiger were brought from different zoos to Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park to improve genetic diversity. Under exchange programme Shivpur, Hyderabad and Tirupati Zoos provided tigers to Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, Patna.

Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan (also known as Sanjay Gandhi Botanical and Zoological Garden or Patna Zoo) is located off Bailey Road in Patna, Bihar, India. The park was opened to the public as a zoo in 1973. The park is Patna's most frequented picnic spot, with more than 36,000 visitors on New Year's Day alone in 2011.
The Patna Zoo makes considerable effort to conserve and propagate endangered species from around the world. Breeding captive wild animals is a difficult challenge that the zoo has met with some notable success.

The Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, Patna was established as a Botanical Garden vide Government of Bihar, Forest Department's letter no. 1781V dated 13.4.1970 on a chunk of 34.00 acres land being part of the Governor’s campus. His Excellency the then Governor of Bihar, Shri Nityanand Kanoongo bestowed the land to the forest department to establish the garden.

Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park located in Patna city of Bihar state.
It is just 6 kms from Patna Junction and the nearest airport is Jayprakash Narayan Airport.
It is 8 to 9 kilometers from Mithapur bus stand.
This biological park located on Bailey Road is spread over 153 acres and it is a center of attraction for local people
People come here from far and wide to see the animals, riding the elephant and boating for a toy train ride.
It is for this reason that 2to 2.5 million people come here for all ages groups.
The visiting time of Patna zoo is from morning 9 A.M to evening 5:30 pm. It remains closed on Monday of every week
The entry fee for adults is rupess 30 and for kids its rs. 10
Looking at its historical background, we will know that in 1969 this park was established as a Botanical Garden.
Sanjay gandhi zoological park is consist of a zoo and a Botanical Garden .
At present, this organic garden is home to 800 animals, where there are 70 species of animals , 33 species of fish and five species of snakes.
A special achievement has been achieved in the breeding of animals in the Patna Zoo.
As a Botanical Garden is consist of 300 species of plants, it also has a fern house, glass house, orchid house and a rose garden.

The Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, Patna was established as a Botanical Garden vide Government of Bihar, Forest Department's letter no. 1781V dated 13.4.1970 on a chunk of 34.00 acres land being part of the Governor’s campus. His Excellency the then Governor of Bihar, Shri Nityanand Kanoongo bestowed the land to the forest department to establish the garden. The Divisional Forest Officer, Gaya Forest Division was deputed as officer-in-charge of the Garden.
In 1972 the name was changed to Biological Park by the Department of Forests, Govt. of Bihar, and, it was brought under the administrative control of the Working Plan Officer, Magadh Circle, Patna. Later on the adjoining 58.20 acres land of Revenue Department and 60.75 acres land of Public Works Department transferred to Forest Department was added to the existing Biological Park. Thus, present area of the Biological Park is approximately 153 acres. The land acquired from Public Works Department and Revenue Department is notified as Protected Forest by the State Government. The State Government has declared the park/zoo service as ‘Essential Service’ under the Bihar Essential Services Maintenance Act. In the year 1980, the name was changed to Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park

The zoo is currently home to over 800 animals of about 110 species, including tiger, leopard, clouded leopard, hippopotamus, crocodile, elephants, Himalayan black bear, jackal, black bucks, spotted deer, peafowl, hill myna, gharial, python, Indian rhinoceros, chimpanzee, giraffe, zebra, emu, and white peacock.
Having started as a botanical garden, the park currently houses more than 300 species of trees, herbs and shrubs. Plant exhibits include a nursery for medicinal plants, an orchid house, a fern house, a glass house, and a rose garden.
The park also includes an aquarium which is the largest revenue generator after the general admission fee. The aquarium has about 35 species of fish, and the snake house has 32 snakes belonging to 5 species.
