Water control in the Yellow River improves resource utilization
The Sanmenxia Dam on the Yellow River was the first of its kind. It was constructed to prevent midstream sediments from flushing downwards, but it incurred problems over the years. Unlike many other river dams in the world, the dam facilities on the Yellow River had to consider thick, heavy sediment. Passed through the Loess Plateau, the river carried mud and sand downstream. Sediment deposits had long been an obstacle, but the situation improved.

CHAIRMAN MAO ERA COMMUNIST CHINA SANMENXIA DAM CONSTRUCTION PROJECT GREAT LEAP FORWARD 62184
Dating to the 1960s, this Chinese propaganda film shows the construction of a series of dams along the Yellow River in Shandong Province. This project was part of the so called Great Leap Forward of the People's Republic of China (PRC), a economic and social campaign by the Communist Party of China (CPC) from 1958 to 1962. The campaign was led by Chairman Mao Zedong and aimed to rapidly transform the country from an agrarian economy into a socialist society through rapid industrialization and collectivization. However, it is widely considered to have caused the Great Chinese Famine.
The film was made in 1961 during the tail end of the Great Leap Forward. The people featured in the film are Chinese citizens of Shandong province and members of the Communist Party of China (CPC). The film starts out explaining the vastness of the Yellow River floodplain in northern China’s Shandong province. There are many smaller rivers that flow into the Yellow River. The Yellow River eventually flows into the Yellow Sea which is on the coast of Shandong. Although, at some places along the Yellow River within China, it is as vast as a sea.
The film then goes on to describe how this will help the farmers of this region. Of course this is in the government’s best interest as farming was collective and owned by the state. Details are brought up on the high expenditures that will be spent on the project and how everyone will benefit from the building of the Sanmenxia Dam.
Next, the Dam is examined in detail. The Sanmenxia Dam is a concrete dam on the Yellow River near Sanmenxia Gorge in Henan province. The dam is multi-purpose and was constructed for flood and ice control along with irrigation, hydroelectric power generation and navigation. The film details how this dam will improve the people’s livelihoods. The production has just been completed.
The final part of the film has a song. This is a kind of workers’ anthem for the good of all people in China, everyone must work and do their part! The heart of the worker is strong, and it is a powerful message in the song. Everyone coming together and China will become number one through hard work and collectivization. In return, the CPC will always look after the People of China for that is why it is called the People’s Republic of China.
The Sanmenxia Dam is a concrete gravity dam on the middle-reaches of the Yellow River near Sanmenxia Gorge on the border between Shanxi province and Henan Province, China. The dam is multi-purpose and was constructed for flood and ice control along with irrigation, hydroelectric power generation and navigation. Construction began in 1957 and was completed in 1960. It is the first major water control project on the Yellow River and was viewed as a major achievement of the new People's Republic of China. Subsequently, its image was printed on the country's bank notes. However, due to sediment accumulation in the reservoir, the dam later had to be re-engineered and renovated. The effects from sediment, which include flooding upstream, have placed the dam at the center of controversy and criticism-related arrests by the Chinese government.

Inside The Three Gorges Dam A Man Made Disaster
When it officially became fully functional on July 4, 2012, China hailed the Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest power station with 22,500 megawatts of installed capacity as a resounding success. They pointed to it's modern, highly efficient turbines, it's ability to increase shipping capacity along the Yangtze River and the fact that it could help to prevent downstream flooding by freeing up flood storage space. Not only all of this, but it was a move towards limiting greenhouse gas emissions. Sounds great, but, there are two sides to every story and the negative consequences of this monumental project, which cost the country the equivalent of around 25 billion U.S. dollars have been described by many as catastrophic both in its human and environmental impacts. Over one million people were displaced and the dam flooded historically significant archeological and cultural sites. Entire ecosystems were permanently altered with rare plant and animal life being pushed to the brink of extinction. Experts warned that the increased pressure such a massive structure would create on the surrounding land would trigger massive landslides and an increased risk of earthquakes, and their eerie predictions seem to be coming true. We’ll break down the story behind what has become without a doubt one of the most controversial pieces of infrastructure ever built by humankind, The Three Gorges Dam.

Pros
The dam has plenty of positive impacts, it wasn’t built just to cause landslides and displace millions. At full power the Three Gorges is capable of reducing coal consumption by over 30 million tonnes a year, thereby avoiding some 100 million tonnes of gas emissions and ten thousand tonnes of carbon monoxide. The presence of ship locks and even ship elevators believe it or not, allows giant vessels to traverse the Yangtze, boosting the country’s economy as a result. While the Chinese government hoped that the dam would provide power to 10% of people in China electricity demand in the country became much higher than expected and less than 2 percent of the population receive power through the dam today. Another positive impact of the dam, if you were to ask government officials would be it's ability to prevent a very real and very serious threat to the millions surrounding and directly affected by the Yangtze,
Floods
The Dam’s top priority, it seemed was in preventing the catastrophic floods that occur along the Yangtze, land that is populated by millions of people. In August of 1931 following a year of above average rainfall the Yangtze flooded. 500 square miles surrounding the river were submerged. Entire rice crops were destroyed. Without this essential food thousands in major cities like Nanjing starved following the catastrophe. All told over three and a half million lives were claimed in the months following the floods. More recently in 1998, a series of floods that lasted from June to September left 3,700 people dead, 15 million homeless and caused nearly 25 billion dollars in economic losses. 13 million homes were damaged or broken beyond repair. Now, government officials tout the dams apparent ability to prevent such catastrophes. The general public and especially those that live in areas near the Yangtze aren’t so sure. Flooding last year was the worst since 1998, leaving hundreds dead. Critics pointed to the dam and its failure to prevent the disaster. The 2016 floods were bad and only time will tell if the Three Gorges is capable of preventing an event as devastating as 1998, or scarier still something more along the lines of what transpired in 1931. This dam is so freaking big, some experts out there think it's sheer mass and the changes in water level it creates could actually cause
Earthquakes
The paths of major fault lines lie directly underneath the Three Gorges. Experts believed that the dam, as a result could cause a significant increase in seismic activity. As you know by now the dam was built despite these and many other concerns, some of which we’ve gone over. A study done by the China Earthquake Administration, a government entity showed that the experts were right. They registered 3,429 earthquakes around the reservoir between mid 2003 and the end of 2009, 30 times the frequency recorded during pre-dam periods. People fear a large earthquake and it's potential consequences as it relates to the dam. If the dam itself were to be damaged during a huge earthquake, for instance, the results would surely be devastating for the millions living in close proximity.

On the Sanmenxia Dam in Henan Province, a massive hydrological project built in the 1950s and the first of its kind along the Yellow River, there are paintings of eight characters that say, when the Yellow River is at peace, China is at peace. The river's large sediment load has historically made it prone to flooding, earning it the name China's Sorrow and legend has it that Yu the Great, one of the first emperors of China, established his legitimacy to rule by bringing the Yellow River floods under control.

Chinese trains - Sanmenxia local railway DF7C, DFH5, DFH3, JS
An afternoon on the Sanmenxia local railway in Henan province. This bustling system is significantly quieter than it's former years now serving a solitary chemical works. Two diesels are active now, a DFH5 and a DF7C. Interestingly the railway doesn't appear to have an interest in scrapping their old machines with a huge amount of trucks, cranes, DFH3 diesels and even a JS steam locomotive stored in a shed. The Two working diesels usually work daily in the afternoon transferring empty tank cars to the chemical plant and loaded tank cars to the exchange yard adjacent to Sanmenxia railway station. 23 April 2016

12Provinces Suffer from Severe Drought

While the south is experiencing severe floods, severest drought
in decades is hitting 12 provinces in China such as Henan,
Hebei and others.
Some areas have been without water for three months.
Experts analyze water and ecology are destroyed at the cost
of rapid economic growth.
Projects such as the Three Gorges Dam and the Water Diversion
are causing huge negative impact to the surrounding ecology.
Severest drought in decades has occurred in 12 provinces
such as Henan, Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Hubei, Inner Mongolia,
Xinjiang and others the summer of this year.
For instance, Shaanxi suffered its worst drought in 53 years,
Henan suffered the worst one in 63 years.
Some areas have been without water for three months.
Mainland media reported that as of July 30, drought covers
more than 11.9 million acres of farm land,
affecting 2.07 million farm animals.
More than 1.6 million people lack drinking water.
Drought mainly centers in Henan province, accounting for half
of the drought stricken area in the entire nation.
Mr. Du, a resident of Henan: There has been no rain. All the
crops were dry dead. We have to get drinking water in pails
from tens of miles away, as well as food.
Mr. Du indicates the local government has done nothing to the
disaster despite the severity of the drought and the hardship.
A peasant of Xi'an, Shaanxi province, Mr. Zhao, told NTD TV
about the local drought.
He also revealed that local reservoirs
were deliberately destroyed.
Mr. Zhao: The crops have withered. The reservoirs and the
wells were ruined intentionally long ago.
Since then, there has been no harvest.
Mr. Zhao explains, since local leaders deliberately
destroyed the irrigation facilities, farming was forced to stop.
The deserted land was then resold and became personal gain
for the village leaders. Villagers were left with nothing.
The Tibetan Plateau, the birthplace of some of China's major
rivers, suffers severe damage and pollution after dozens of
years of exploitation in the west.
Dry riverbeds are widespread in the Plateau.
Similar issues have also occurred to many other areas in China,
such as the northeast wetlands being swallowed up
by real estate development.
Sulmaan Khan, assistant Professor of Chinese
Foreign Relations at Tufts University, described in an article in
Foreign Affairs magazine, “The Chinese public is tired of the
water shortages, unsafe drinking water, and soil contamination
caused by haphazard urban development.”
The water shortage is not only a serious damage to the ecology,
but also suicidal.
The article mentioned the water diversion project brings
immense ecological risks.
“It is quite possible that the project will disrupt the river
systems and exacerbate water shortages, rather than solve them,
by triggering soil erosion.”
But, Beijing has yet to develop a plan that addresses the entirety
of its environmental woes.
Chinese financial think tank researcher Gong Shengli:
The water diversion and the Three Gorges dam, as well as the
Sanmenxia power plants built by the Soviet Union,
have resulted in disasters hard to resolve.
Many seismic activities and mud slides in surrounding areas
such as Chongqing, Sichuan and so forth, have been analyzed
to be greatly connected to ecological damage brought
by the Three Gorges Dam.
Temperatures between August 2 and 4 reached as high as
37 to 39 degrees C, and even 40 degrees in the Sichuan Basin,
Chongqing, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Henan, and Hubei.
July 30, Hydrology and Resources Bureau of Henan Province
issued a drought warning: No rainfall is expected next week.
And by mid-August, most parts of Shaanxi will continue under
high temperatures and little rain, the drought will worsen.
