Santa’s Workshop In North Pole, NY
We are so in love with Santa's Workshop in the Lake Placid area of upstate New York! This was our first year visiting and we are sure to return as a yearly tradition. Opened in July 1, 1949, Santa's Workshop is the oldest theme park in the United States. From what I have read, it hasn't changed much since opening and it retains a charm that appeals to all ages. The kiddo was truly enchanted! There are buildings to explore and various characters to meet, including the big man himself! The rides appeal to the under 4 ft crowd. In the snow the place is really magical and a fun day out. And only a couple hours from Montreal. Highly recommend visiting in the Christmas season!

North Pole in Alaska gets ready for Christmas
(8 Dec 2015) LEAD-IN:
It's the town where it's Christmas all year round. North Pole, Alaska in the United States is always festive, but at this time of year it's inundated with thousands of letters from children.
But with two resident Santa Claus - who gets to open the mail?
STORY-LINE:
Festive trees glow amid the snow here in 'North Pole' .
Of course this isn't the real North Pole... it's a small town of 2,200 residents in the US state of Alaska.
Even the street lights are shaped like the candy canes - just like those that hang from Christmas trees around the world.
The signs in the town boast names like Santa Claus Lane and Snowman Lane.
Because of its reputation, each year in December thousands of letters pour in from children, hoping Santa Claus will grant them a Christmas wish.
But for the North Pole's Post Office, it's a year-round venture.
Lisa Wineland is the manager, and in order to help Santa she spends a lot of her time sifting through the mail.
She says the children: Want all the newest, latest, greatest electronics and games. It's mostly electronics, a lot of times.
So, we do open, it's addressed to us, we open them, pull the letters out. Most of them are coloured upon, have nice little pictures on them, and then the letters themselves, they always profess to being very good that year, she adds.
It's a Herculean task to process all of the mail - and during the holiday period the post office often needs to call on colleagues in nearby Anchorage to deal with the demand.
Wineland reads aloud a typical letter: This year, I would like to receive your blessing for me and my family and friends. Thanks for your effort to share happiness to others last year. Please give my love to Ms. Claus and the reindeer, especially Rudolph. Sincerely, Manke.
Tourists often head for Santa Claus House, a gift shop that stocks all-things-Christmas.
People can buy their North Pole souvenirs here, grab a sweet snack, pet a reindeer and - of course - sit on the knee of the main man himself.
Paul Brown is the operations manager here: Santa Claus House is primarily a gift shop, it's a general visitor attraction. It's a great place to visit with Santa all year round. We've got reindeer. We've got the world's largest Santa. A lot of different, fun elements, and things like that that people can come visit other than just the shopping.
Tourist Lauren Perez is visiting from Cuba: I'm coming with friends from work, and we want to see the Northern Lights, hopefully tonight, and Santa Claus. Who doesn't want to meet Santa?
One North Pole city official also boasts the name Santa Claus. He changed his given name while living in the Lake Tahoe, Nevada area.
With a name like that he figured two years ago he should live in North Pole, so made the move to Alaska.
Last year, he was elected to the city council on a write-in vote. But don't confuse this Santa with the one that sits inside Santa Claus House, asking children what they want for Christmas.
There's a serious side to this Santa Claus.
More than anything else, what I do is advocate for the two million children in the United States who are abused, neglected, exploited, abandoned, homeless, institutionalised, says Santa Claus.
Santa Claus - the councilman - says he's a Christian monk who doesn't like the commercialization of Christmas.
Because of my child advocacy, I sort of have a general aversion to the crass commercial, secular spectacle that Christmas has become, he says.
For now the scene is set for this year's holiday season - with freshly fallen snow along Santa Claus Lane.
