Stevie Luna-Rodriguez at Stop the Wall: Rally to Save Santa Ana in Alamo, TX
Have you ever met a butterfly that stopped its path for a badge? Powerful words by RGV poet Stevie Luna-Rodriguez from The Cicadas, an original poem performed at Stop the Wall: Rally to Save Santa Ana in January at the field adjacent to Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. Luna-Rodriguez states that that the poem is dedicated to Maria Ermerita Portillo Lopez, an Honduran immigrant who died in Sullivan City last year, here, in the RGV. She died out in the brush. I helped her cousin who came down from Virginia to go look for her, and it changed my life. The poem is also dedicated to RGV poet, Noemi Martinez, author of South Texas Experience. Luna-Rodriguez also mentions: I grew up as a farmworker... my parents picked these fields [I'm standing on] for decades... This short #PoetsAgainstWalls video documents Stevie's presentation at the rally and the poem text is included here:
THE CICADAS
by Stevie Luna-Rodriguez
When the cicadas try to sing in unison
I think of you.
Beads of sweat in the brush
A maze of what ifs buried in your chest
I have nightmares of you.
(I think we are alike in the way
That we are both tired and terrified
of navigating the darkness in our own backyard)
You bled like me
but I wish I could bleed for you
Because who
Told you
That you weren't worthy of water
When you are this close to dying of thirst?
You deserve a golden palace
But instead
You get a $70 billion dollar cage
And no one knows how to get the key to
Free us
Just yet
But I always see you
in the murmurations of birds
A revolution encoded in the roots of their feathers
How they glide against wind when they’re
together
That's their secret.
I think we’re missing the fact
That
Our predators are the same and we forgot
because
This wall isn’t a mirror yet
Wake up
They call our babies dreamers
As if they'll never achieve it
And they call us immigrants like we should be ashamed to be butterflies
Have you ever met a butterfly that stopped its path for a badge
Have you ever looked at a butterfly and felt anything but pride for its
Color and composure
And do you know their path is ingrained into them?
Did you know their path is ingrained into them?
Listen
To the cicadas when they sing in unison
Move quietly in your dark home
And i will move with you i will try in dreams
I only seek to be the green in the leaves to guide you
But right now
I can only hope that someone will be there to hold you
When the ringing in our ears stops
And it finally feels like we’re home.

South Texas Refuge Complex
Situated along the southernmost stretch of the Rio Grande, the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge is one of the top birding destinations in the world and home to half of all butterfly species found in North America. In the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, situated along the Gulf of Mexico, thorn forest intermingles with freshwater wetlands, coastal prairies, mudflats, and beaches. The largest population of ocelots in the United States call this refuge home, making it a center for conservation and recovery efforts for this endangered cat. And in the nearby Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge, four climates converge, producing one of the most biologically diverse regions in North America. In addition to providing habitat for an amazing array of species, these refuges enrich their surrounding communities by hosting nature festivals, forming conservation partnerships with local organizations, offering meaningful volunteer opportunities, and providing interactive educational programs for youth.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping!
