Santa Fe River Springs, Florida - (HD)
About 2 hours west of St. Augustine, you'll find one of the most beautiful natural wonders in the southern United States - the fresh water springs of the Santa Fe River. We got there by renting a canoe at Santa Fe Canoe Outpost and paddling down river.
As can always be the case in Florida, we ran in to a sudden change in weather. Thunder, lightning, and a downpour of rain chased us to the swampy banks to find shelter under some trees!
The fact that it's only a 1 in 5 chance to see an alligator on this stretch of the river was cold comfort....I mean, the odds were less than that we'd get caught in the rain!
Thankfully, our son was up to the challenge as he set about setting up the comforts of home (like a place to go to the bathroom!)...

Santa Fe River Paddle/Fishing Trip - January 31st - February 1st 2015
A two day, 15 mile paddle & fishing trip down the Santa Fe river located in north central Florida in search of the rare Suwannee Black Bass. We put in at the Santa Fe River Canoe Outpost (santaferiver.com) in High Springs, Florida, camped overnight near Rum Island and finished up at the Hwy 47 bridge take-out. The Santa Fe River is a Blackwater river full of sink holes and a myriad of exotic wildlife including underground freshwater springs. The Santa Fe is one of the most beautiful and unique river's I've ever paddled. The song used in this video is Echo by Incubus.

VISIT HIGH SPRINGS:
In 1883 the Savannah, Florida, and Western Railroad was extended from Live Oak to Gainesville and a post office and railroad station were established under the name of Santaffey, which was the common spelling of the nearby Santa Fe River. In 1888 the name was changed to High Springs and in the next few years the town prospered as a result of phosphate mining in the area. In 1893 the town was incorporated and the railroad completed its connection to Tampa. The community of High Springs was built and prospered because of honest hard work of men and women who toiled on the railroad, in the mines, and in the fields.
In cooperation with the University of Florida, High Springs is now involved in the restoration of her downtown area. The two adjacent buildings which now house The Great Outdoors Restaurant were restored in 1986. The old trading company building was generally known as the Opera House. It was built circa 1895. The bottom floor housed many different mercantile firms over the years and the top floor was where the stage performances, silent movies, and dances were held. The old cafe building was originally built as a barber shop circa 1915.
High Springs has become a center for those interested in the great outdoors. The area offers canoeing, kayaking, and fishing on the Santa Fe, Ichetucknee, and Suwannee Rivers, hiking at O'Leno State Park, and swimming, tubing, and diving in the numerous crystal clear springs. This area's extensive system of underwater caverns offers the best cave diving in the world and attracts visitors from around the globe to experience this dangerous sport.
We are glad to have you here, and we hope you also find High Springs a nice place to be.

The Santa Fe River is Unsafe
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has designated the Santa Fe River as an Outstanding Florida Waterway (OFW) but in recent years boat traffic has made the river extremely unsafe for historical recreational uses such as swimming, canoeing and fishing. Long term residents are being denied access to the river that they live on due to high speed boaters. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission regulates boaters. Please contact the FWC at myfwc.com and let them know that boaters need to travel at idle speed regardless of river stage. Please help us make the Santa Fe River safe again.
