Green Chiles for Breakfast at the Santa Fe Farmer's Market
| Red or green, you will constantly be asked while visiting New Mexico. They are referring to your preference for chiles! The Santa Fe Farmer's Market is the place to go wander and grab several little breakfasts on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. It gives you a taste of the area, from the people to the crafts to the munchies.
Route 66 Part 8 - We Reach SANTA FE, New Mexico
In part 8 we take Route 66 from Tucumcari to Santa Fe, New Mexico.
This is the Santa Fe loop which was the original alignment of Route 66 between 1926 and 1937.
Santa Fe is the capital of New Mexico and looks very different to many of the other towns and cities on Route 66. It has a very distinctive architectural style all its own. Low rise, adobe brick buildings, which consist of a mixture of sun-dried earth and straw. Many of these are over 400 years old.
Santa Fe is also home to many artists with galleries concentrated along Canyon Road.
We stayed in Santa Fe for two nights so got a full day to explore. As well as the historic buildings in the centre of town we did get chance to visit the Santa Fe Farmers Market at the Railyard which is open Saturday and Tuesday mornings and Wednesday afternoons.
We didn’t take the camera to any restaurants but the standard of food in Santa Fe is excellent.
So make sure you take the Santa Fe Loop when driving Route 66.
Next time, we drive Route 66 to Winslow, Arizona.

Texas: San Elizario Historic Town
Twenty-two miles to the southeast of downtown El Paso sits San Elizario, a small border town with a history spanning more than 400 years. In 1598, Don Juan de Oñate passed through along the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (the Royal Road of the Interior), a now historic trail that connected Mexico City with Santa Fe, New Mexico the then northern capital of New Spain. The area became part of the hacienda system established by the Spanish until it was abandoned in 1787. In 1789, Spain built a presidio and mission at San Elizario to protect its land interests from France, and the community was second only to El Paso in size and importance at the time. It remained a part of Mexico until it was ceded to the United States in 1848 as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
The Historic town of San Elizario's centerpiece includes restaurants, gift shops, 18 Historic sites, including the San Elizario Chapel, The Presidio (fort) and the Old El Paso County jail, where legend Billy the Kid once roamed.
Today, this semi-rural farming community remains an important element in the region's rich heritage. The irrigation canals that feed the surrounding farms in many cases follow the alignments of the original acequias, and Glorieta Road leading out of San Elizario toward El Paso follows the El Camino Real. The town center, a National Register Historic District, is roughly bounded by the original presidio site, and includes the San Elizario Presidio Chapel. It is also the start of El Paso’s Mission Trail. Stop in Los Portales to pick up a walking tour brochure of the historic district. Originally built in the 1850s as a home, it now serves as the town’s museum and information center. In its three-block core you can learn about San Elizario’s deep history and explore buildings constructed as early as 1830, many of them still in use today.
While steeped in history, the community is reinventing itself as a vibrant artist colony, with more than 20 working artist studios, including those of Amado Peña, Bert Saldaña, and Alberto Escamilla. Art as business is a concept not lost in this small community. The Mission Trail Art Market operates the third Sunday of the month May through November, and First Friday Art walks are monthly happenings in San Elizario.

Santa Fe To Mexico
This is an instrumental version of Santa Fe To Mexico played by a small (virtual) orchestra with loud sound effects. The photos were taken by me in the Texas Hill Country (not New Mexico). My apologies for that, but New Mexico is a long trip just to get photos. The scrolled lyrics are by Lee Gunter. I tried to photo edit all modern things out of the photos, such as power lines, modern buildings, highways, etc., but I missed a few. You might enjoy catching these editing slips.

Blue Bell Ice Cream is coming to town.
March 1, you will be able to buy the No. 3-selling brand in the U.S. in Albuquerque, Belen, Bernalillo, Grants, Los Lunas, Milan, Placitas, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe and Socorro at Albertsons, John Brooks Stores, Sunflower Farmers Markets and Pros Ranch Market.
The product will be coming to some Valero Corner Stores in late March or April, said Micheal Reasner, territory and operations manager for Albuquerque and surrounding areas. Reasner transferred here from the El Paso branch.
The Brenham, Texas-based company, known for its fresh homemade-tasting ice cream, is leasing space at 2350 Aztec NE to serve as a transfer station. The company has hired four drivers to work at the transfer station and will be hiring two or three parttime merchandisers.
Blue Bell plans to eventually build its own transfer station or distribution center, Reasner told the Journal.
Previously, the brand was only available in some southeast parts of the state like Las Cruces, Deming, Alamogordo, Hobbs and Clovis and a few other small areas, Reasner said.
Blue Bell is available in parts of 19 states. A Blue Bell employee handles the ice cream from the time it is made until the product reaches the store shelves, the news release says.

Discovering America on 2 Wheels - Leg 2 Part 4 - SW of Anton Chico NM to Santa Fe NM
DA2W - This video takes you from my overnight campout behind the Milagro Food Mart on I40W to the Best Kept Secret in New Mexico - the village of Villanueva and Villanueva State Park where I hiked the Canyon Trail and El Cerro Trails to the most spectacular views and breathtaking beauty of my entire trip.
I left Villanueva State Park headed for Santa Fe but overnighted at the Glorieta Conference Center - a beautiful complex nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at 7400' elevation... where I met people who really Walk the Talk and a place where I truly felt the presence of God.
I left the Glorieta Conference Center and took a wind-assisted ride into my final destination for Leg 2 - Santa Fe New Mexico.
At this point, I had cycled 1268 miles and hiked 114 miles since I left my hometown of Lake Jackson Tx.
