SANTA FE, USA - travel shorts
Welcome to 'the city different,' a place that makes its own rules without ever forgetting its long and storied past. Walking through its historic neighborhoods, or around the busy Plaza that remains its core, there's no denying that Santa Fe has a timeless, earthy soul. Founded around 1610, Santa Fe is the second-oldest city and the oldest state capital in the US, and is all but unique in having not only preserved many of its seductive original adobe buildings, but also insisted that all new downtown structures follow the same architectural style. And yet, despite being home to the country’s oldest public building and throwing its oldest annual party, Fiesta, Santa Fe is also synonymous with contemporary chic, thanks to its thriving art market, gourmet restaurants, great museums, upscale spas and world-class opera.
At over 7000ft above sea level, Santa Fe is also the nation’s highest state capital. Sitting at the foot of the glowing Sangre de Cristo range, it makes a fantastic base for hiking, mountain biking, backpacking and skiing. When you come off the trails, you can indulge in chile-smothered local cuisine, buy turquoise and silver directly from Native American jewelers in the Plaza, visit remarkable churches, or simply wander along centuries-old, cottonwood-shaded lanes and daydream about some day moving here.
Santa Fe’s mind-boggling assortment of characters include traditional and avant-garde artists, New Age hippy transplants, Spanish families that have called the city home for centuries, Mexican immigrants, retirees from both coasts, and more than a few Hollywood producers and movie stars. Most are drawn above all by the relaxed attitude, the sense of space, the unbeatable climate and that certain something that gives Santa Fe a singularly alluring essence.

Hyde Park Road Descent - Santa Fe, NM
Descent of Hyde Park Road during Texas Triathlon's Spring Break Trip on March 13th, 2017. It was a cool experience riding to the top of the mountain which was completely covered in snow, without a speck of snow at the bottom. My favorite part of the ride was around 13:00 in the video, going through the campgrounds.
Averaged about 25mph for the descent, or closer to 30mph if you don't include the small uphill sections. Full ride details:
Santa Fe's Loretto Chapel and the Miraculous Staircase
Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe
The Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico is home of the miraculous staircase. As legend has it, when the chapel was build in the late 1800s, there was not a staircase constructed to the choir loft because the chapel was too small for a standard staircase. A ladder would be too dangerous. So the Sisters got together and prayed to St. Joseph for help. Soon thereafter, a stranger appeared on a donkey and offered to construct a staircase for them. But he would need complete privacy.
Three months later the stranger disappeared, leaving behind a staircase that defied all odds of support yet was extremely strong and sturdy. The man left without asking for money and without fanfare. He simply disappeared and was never heard from again. To this day, many think it was St. Joseph who constructed that miraculous staircase at the Loretto Chapel.
Construction on the Loretto Chapel began in 1873 and finished in 1878. The building sticks out amongst the Adobe buildings in Santa Fe because the Loretto Chapel was built in a Gothic style. The chapel was part of the Loretto Academy.

Top 10 Cities in the United States
Top 10 Cities in the United States
10.NAPA- Known as one of the finest wine regions in the world, Napa also has the cuisine to match: It's home to French Laundry, one of the most highly acclaimed restaurants in the world, among others. And the rolling hills with endless grapevines make the mini Tuscany, one of the most beautiful places on earth
9.SAVANNAH -Even though it dropped from last year's spot at number 7, Savannah has got it all, said one reader. Thanks to its mix of history, art, shopping, nightlife, and delicious food, you can't have a bad time.
8.NEW YORK CITY -It's no surprise that New York made our list of Top 10 Cities in the United States, though it is a bit of a surprise that it dropped from the fifth to eighth slot. Still, our readers say the city is electric, with something to do around every corner. Aside from Broadway shows, Central Park, Times Square, shopping, and dining, no city gets you more in the holiday spirit than New York.
07.NEW ORLEANS -Our readers call New Orleans a magical city. Not surprisingly, it gets its highest marks for culture, atmosphere and restaurants; our readers say it has the best food in the U.S., with live music around every corner.
6.CARMEL -By far the smallest city on our list, Carmel, Calif. has a big personality with endless charm and beauty. The city is known for its quaint cottages and shops, and the restaurants and artsy boutiques make for a great weekend getaway. What may garner Carmel the most attention however, are the picturesque and romantic ocean views.
5.CHICAGO- The terrific architecture and great ethnic food help make Chicago a must-visit city (even though it dropped a couple spots from last year's list, where it owned the No. 3 slot). The restaurants, skyscrapers, museums, and waterfront all add up to a perfect city for solo, friend, family, or romantic getaways.
4.HONOLULU -The endless beaches and constant sunshine helped Honolulu place high on our readers' list. The genuine friendliness and hospitality of the people make Honolulu a major draw, and the ocean views and fresh seafood can't be beat.
3.SAN FRANCISCO -San Francisco nabbed third place (down from last year's No. 2 spot) with its world of culture and class. I left my heart... said one reader, which may have something to do with the great art museums, opera, food, symphony, and beautiful neighborhoods.
2.SANTA FE - Our readers found Santa Fe to be pure magic; a heaven where souls vacation. Their love bumped it from last year's spot at No. 4 on this list. Go for the atmosphere, architecture, food, and open spaces, said one reader, or take a whole day to explore the galleries.
1.CHARLESTON - With sand, sun, history, good food, and friendly people, Charleston is a consistent hit with the travelers who venture to this gracious and beautiful city (in fact, it's taken first place our list of Top 10 Cities in the United States for three years now and been rated as the friendliest). Nearby beaches and impressive architecture draw visitors, but it's the insanely nice locals who enhance magnificent bed and breakfasts and amazing shopping. The charm of this city brings me back every year, praised one devoted fan. The food, history, architecture and people are wonderful, said one reader. A bucket list city!
