Cádiz is an ancient port city in southwest Spain, built on a strip of land surrounded by the sea in the Andalusia region. The home of the Spanish Navy, the port boomed in the 16th-century as a base for exploration and trade. It has more than 100 watchtowers, including iconic Torre Tavira, traditionally used for spotting ships, and 18th-century Cádiz Cathedral, on the waterfront.
Cádiz, the oldest continuously inhabited city in Spain and one of the oldest in western Europe, has been a principal home port of the Spanish Navy since the accession of the Spanish Bourbons in the 18th century. The city is a member of the Most Ancient European Towns Network. It is also the site of the University of Cádiz.
Situated on a narrow slice of land surrounded by the sea‚ Cádiz is, in most respects, a typically Andalusian city with a wealth of attractive vistas and well-preserved historical landmarks. The older part of Cádiz within the remnants of the city walls is commonly referred to as the Old Town (Spanish: Casco Antiguo). It is characterized by the antiquity of its various quarters (barrios), among them El Pópulo, La Viña, and Santa María, which present a marked contrast to the newer areas of town. While the Old City's street plan consists of narrow winding alleys connecting large plazas, newer areas of Cádiz typically have wide avenues and more modern buildings. In addition, the city is dotted with numerous parks where exotic plants flourish, including giant trees supposedly brought to Spain by Columbus from the New World.
During the Napoleonic Wars, Cádiz was blockaded by the British from 1797 until the Peace of Amiens in 1802 and again from 1803 until the outbreak of the Peninsular War in 1808. In that war, it was one of the few Spanish cities to hold out against the invading French and their candidate Joseph Bonaparte. Cádiz then became the seat of Spain's military high command and Cortes (parliament) for the duration of the war. It was here that the liberal Spanish Constitution of 1812 was proclaimed. The citizens revolted in 1820 to secure a renewal of this constitution and the revolution spread successfully until Ferdinand VII was imprisoned in Cádiz. French forces secured the release of Ferdinand in the 1823 Battle of Trocadero and suppressed liberalism for a time. In 1868, Cádiz was once again the seat of a revolution, resulting in the eventual abdication and exile of Queen Isabella II. The Cádiz Cortes decided to reinstate the monarchy under King Amadeo just two years later.
In recent years, the city has undergone much reconstruction. Many monuments, cathedrals, and landmarks have been cleaned and restored.
The old town of Cádiz is one of the most densely populated urban areas in Europe and is packed with narrow streets. The old town benefits, though, from several striking plazas, which are enjoyed by citizens and tourists alike. These are the Plaza de Mina, Plaza San Antonio, Plaza de Candelaria, Plaza de San Juan de Dios, and Plaza de España.
La Playa de la Caleta is the best-loved beach of Cádiz. It has always been in Carnival songs, due to its unequalled beauty and its proximity to the Barrio de la Viña. It is the beach of the Old City, situated between two castles, San Sebastian and Santa Catalina. It is around 400 meters (1,300 ft) long and 30 meters (98 ft) wide at low tide. La Caleta and the boulevard show a lot of resemblance to parts of Havana, the capital city of Cuba, like the malecon. Therefore, it served as the set for several of the Cuban scenes in the beginning of the James Bond movie Die Another Day.
La Playa de la Victoria, in the newer part of Cádiz, is the beach most visited by tourists and natives of Cádiz. It is about three km long, and it has an average width of 50 meters (160 ft) of sand. The moderate swell and the absence of rocks allow family bathing. It is separated from the city by an avenue; on the landward side of the avenue, there are many shops and restaurants.
La Playa de Santa María del Mar or Playita de las Mujeres is a small beach in Cádiz, situated between La Playa de Victoria and La Playa de la Caleta. It features excellent views of the old district of Cádiz.

Cadiz is the capital of the Cadiz Province in the Andalucia region of Spain.

Cadiz is said to be the oldest city in western Europe, as it was founded by Phoenician sailors about 3.000 years ago, as a commercial stronghold. Archeological remains can be found all around the old town. The Archeological Museum (Plaza de Mina) exhibits are interesting, specially two Phoenician stone sarcophagus. The remainings of the Roman theatre just behind the Old Cathedral are also worth a visit.
The massive stone walls and forts that can be seen surrounding the old town were built to protect the city after the British Sir Francis Drake's attack and sacking in 1596, and the forts of San Sebastian and Santa Catalina (and occasionally Baluarte de la Concepcion) are open to the public.
Everyone should visit the Cathedral in the old town and climb to the top of the North Tower for a nice view of the entire city.
The church Oratorio de San Felipe Neri, where the first Spanish Constitution was signed, has plenty of marble and bronze plates to honour the representatives from mainland Spain and colonial territories, ranging from Philippines Islands to Central and South America.
The Torre Tavira, near the Central Market (Mercado de Abastos) holds a camera obscura. Located in one of the towers originally used by merchants to watch out for their ships returning home from the Americas, it provides a birds-eye view of the old part of town.
The Central Market itself is well worth a visit in the morning, especially the fish section.
A modern monument of Cadiz are the huge pylons of the powerline crossing the bay of Cadiz. These 150 metre high pylons are lattice towers with cylindrical cross section.

Do not miss Carnaval in Cadiz, one of the oldest and best in Spain, often cited as the third biggest Carnaval celebration in the world. Usually in February, the weekend before Ash Wednesday is consistently the loudest and most eventful so be sure to check the calendar. Singing, dancing and costumes run for the whole week. Informal groups (chirigotas, cuartetos, coros, comparsas and romanceros) sing at the old town streets, usually with strong critics on local, national and international politics, the jet set, and just about anything/anybody, up to the Royal Family. Make your travel plans early as most accommodation gets booked months in advance and be prepared to spend almost double for the week of Carnaval. One way to experience Carnaval on the dime, and perhaps the preferred way of Andalusian locals, is to board an afternoon train heading to Cadiz, spend the night singing and dancing, then catch the first train back in the morning. Expect singing, dancing, costumes and drinking on all trains. Sleeping on the public beach is also another popular option, though be sure to bring a blanket or sleeping bag, both of which can be stored in lockers at the train station; expect company and use common sense.
Semana Santa (Easter or Holy Week) is less formal than in Sevilla, and probably more authentic and emotive an experience for that.
Enjoy the best sunset in Spain at 'Playa de la Caleta' at the northern end of the old town. The main beaches (Santa Maria del Mar, Victoria, and Cortadura) start at the edge of the old town, continue all along the new town, and on alongside the road to San Fernando. In total some 10 km of the widest, cleanest beaches you will find in Europe, with safe bathing from around May to October. The summer heat is usually tempered by an Atlantic breeze, although on days when the Levante blows beware of flying sand.
Victoria Beach is short bus ride (number 7 or number 2) away from the old town and is beautiful with clean water and lots of activities including beach football and volleyball, surfing and kite flying all available.
Another worth visiting places hidden in cadiz is Andalusي Market. In this market many local artists display their original products. From herbal soaps to 21 different types of spanish empanadilla, teas and spices from morocco, potters making the famous andalucian pottery on spot, to name a few. It is organised by Instituciَn Ferial de Cadiz(Ifeca) every year for 3 days in August to promote local craftsmen business. One can find all the typical spanish food delicacies served here at a reasonable price. This year it was held on 17,18,19 August 2012 in the neighbourhood of El Pَpulo. The dates may vary every year depending on the weekend.
Parque Guadalete, El Pto. Sta. María - DJI Phantom 3 - Spain - 4K
The Guadalete River is a river in southern Spain, part of the Atlantic coast of Andalusia. Born north of the Sierra de Grazalema (in the rock Grande) and ends in El Puerto de Santa María in Cádiz Bay.
Runs through the provinces of Seville and Cadiz, the latter being the most runs. The Guadalete River, its tributaries and its basin irrigation water supply to a vast plain and is also the source of drinking water of about one million people.
The archaeological and paleontological site of El Palmar del Conde with the neighborhood El Portal contains evidence of the presence of large prehistoric mammals
His name seems to derive from Lete (the river of forgetfulness in Greek mythology), for a battle between Phoenicians settled in the current Cadiz and its Greek neighbors settled at the mouth of the river, the port Menesteo now known as El Puerto de Santa María .

El río Guadalete es un río del sur de España, perteneciente a la vertiente atlántica de Andalucía. Nace al norte de la sierra de Grazalema (en el peñón Grande) y desemboca en El Puerto de Santa María en la Bahía de Cádiz.
Transcurre por las provincias de Sevilla y Cádiz, siendo esta última la que más recorre. El río Guadalete, sus afluentes y su cuenca abastecen de agua de riego a una extensa vega y es también la fuente de agua potable de aproximadamente un millón de personas.
El yacimiento arqueológico y paleontológico de El Palmar del Conde junto a la barriada El Portal contiene evidencias de la presencia de grandes mamíferos prehistóricos
Su nombre parece derivar de Lete (el río del olvido en la mitología griega), por una batalla entre fenicios asentados en la actual Cádiz y sus vecinos griegos asentados en la desembocadura de este río, el puerto Menesteo hoy conocido como El Puerto de Santa María.

Santa Cruz neighborhood of Seville
It is the former Jewish quarter of the medieval city and is bordered by the Real Alcázar, the Jardines de Murillo, Calle Mateos Gago and Calle Santa María La Blanca.
You can see wonderful small paved streets, souvenir shops, tapas bars, medieval narrow maze, old walls, churches and gardens.

Palma is the major city and port on the island of Mallorca and capital city of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands in Spain. It is situated on the south coast of the island on the Bay of Palma. As of the 2007 census, the population of the city of Palma proper was 383,107, and the population of the entire urban area was estimated to be 517,285, ranking as the 12th largest urban area of Spain.
In this video we visit three places in Palma, the first being Spanish Village. The Spanish Village is located in the Son Españolet district and homes a large collection of reproductions: houses, palaces, churches, fortresses and other monuments as well as typical architectural details that are characteristic of the different Spanish regions.
Next was La Seu Cathedral. Construction began in 1230 and the cathedral was finished in 1601. Designed in the French Gothic style, the cathedral is 121 meter long and 55 meter wide. The main body of the church is set in the middle of a mass of pillars and spires, behind which lies the strong buttress reinforced with a double row of flying arches. The bell tower, still unfinished today, is 52 meter high with three stories. The main facade, which overlooks the Almudaina Palace, collapsed during a 1851 earthquake and was later completely reconstructed, with the exception of the Renaissance-era door which miraculously emerged unscathed. The vast, airy interior is striking for its large-scale harmonious proportions. It features three naves resting on 44-meter tall octagonal pillars, eight chapels each side of the nave, and lacks both transept and ambulatory.
And lastly we visit Bellver Castle. Bellver Castle is a circular castle on a hill near Palma. It was built in the 14th century for King James II of Aragon. It was used as a military prison during the 18th and 19th centuries. Now it is one of the main tourist attractions of the island.

6. Oviedo. Prices in Northern Spain are often cheaper, so you can happily get a great hotel here without spending a lot. Check out the excellent Barceló Oviedo Cervantes:
5. Zahara de los Atunes. Either go with Hotel Avenida Playa (simple, clean, and right off the beach - or the slightly more chic Hotel Doña Lola -
4. Las Alpujarras. Casa Rural la Fragua is a gorgeous little tucked away whitewashed apartment in Capileira (either stay here or in Pampaneira). This place is perfect for exploring the villages around the area.
3. El Rocío. I love Hotel La Malvasía with its old-world luxury, the fact it’s only 5-minutes walk from the famous Santa María del Rocío church and they also have a terrace which is perfect for sunsets.

It´s began to build XV century on reclaimed land due to population growth, is considered one of the top places of Cadiz. It is also known as Town Hall Square, to be headquartered in the same hall from the sixteenth century, although the present building is not the same that was in the beginning ..
The Square of San Juan de Dios has been renamed several times. In the sixteenth century was called Corredera Square and over the following centuries the Real Square and Armas Square. Already square of San Juan de Dios and Mercy settled here a market that operated until the second half of the nineteenth century.
It is considered the first place in the city of Cadiz.
They had begun to form two neighborhoods outside the walled medieval, or Santa Maria to the east and Santiago to the west, and the wide space between the two became the square.
In this square we find the Church of the Hospital of San Juan de Dios or the Misericordia. The church was built in 1688 and came to house the Cathedral of Cadiz while it was being rebuilt. Forms part of the oldest hospital in the city and has Baroque style.
We can find in this place called House of Pazos de Miranda, is one of the key houses of neoclassical architecture in Cadiz. Built by architect Miguel de Olivares and was built in 1795.
The Square consists of two type fonts that offer a show pond water, light and sound twice daily and featuring classical pieces by Manuel de Falla and Chueca and Valverde as the soundtrack.
