How to use TFL London Cycle Hire - Santander Cycles
The London Cycle Hire scheme is a great and affordable way to get around London. Joolz shows you how to use them in this video and gives some helpful tips on what not to do.
Most Londoners call them Boris Bikes after Boris Johnson who was the mayor of London when the scheme was initiated and they have sponsors who change periodically. At time of filming it was called the Santander Cycle Hire scheme or Santander Cycles.
If you do it right you only have to pay two pounds to hire it for 24 hours but you must only use it in 30 minute stages unless you want to be charged more money. The next generation of Santander Cycles arrive in London
The next generation of Santander Cycles have arrived in London!
The first of the new UK-built bikes are now available, with thousands set to join the Santander Cycles scheme over the next few years.
They’re easy to ride, safe and strong. A built in technology platform, CyTek, designed and built by Santander business customer, Blaze, means the bikes can evolve alongside London.
The bikes have been designed to be easier to ride and maintain.
New features:
- Accelerometer and Bluetooth to reduce maintenance costs
- Brighter lights, even in the daytime, thanks to a new 180 degree system designed by Blaze
- A new rear light that gets brighter when you brake
- Smaller wheels for faster acceleration from a standing start – handy for city riding
- Puncture prevention with an Aramid belt and internal puncture protection layer
- Lower bottom bracket and easier step-through height makes for a more comfortable ride for smaller cyclists
- Tougher mudguards that provide better protection in the rain
- A comfier gel saddle
- One handed seat clamp so it’s easier to adjust the saddle height
- Upgraded Shimano brakes for better stopping performance

Santander Cycles is tackling the fears of darker nights by introducing a ground-breaking laser innovation to the Santander Cycles scheme.
The Blaze Laserlight™ - which is being largely funded by Santander – projects the image of a cycle onto the roadway 6 metres in front of the rider, helping drivers of vehicles become more aware of cyclists, especially those on their near side. The Blaze Laserlight™ also aims to boost the confidence of cyclists on the roads.
To promote the roll out, Santander has teamed up with newly retired Olympic Gold, Silver and Double World Heptathlete Champion Jessica Ennis-Hill and former Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button to create a short Halloween-themed film called ‘The Blaze Witch Project’ highlighting the benefits of the Blaze Laserlight™.

Santander Cycles trial new laser light device
New bike lights that beam a laser onto the road ahead of cyclists are being trialled on 250 Santander Cycles across the capital. A bicycle logo is projected six metres in front of the rider to alert drivers and pedestrians. The safety device was designed by a Bethan Green-based business.
Some cycling campaigners say it's a quick fix solution to the wider problem of safety for cyclists in London.
