Sakkara (sometimes called Saqqara) is one of the most extensive archaeological sites in all of Egypt! It was the primary cemetery of the former capital of Egypt, Memphis, yet it is still one of the most unexplored archaeological sites, despite the amazing finds that have already been discovered? What else may be hidden among the site?
The site's most major feature is the Step Pyramid of King Zoser, which dates back to 2700 BC. It is one of the oldest stone structures in the world!

The Oldest pyramid in Saqqara, Egypt
We visited Saqqara in Egypt to see the oldest pyramid. It was wonderful and extremely interesting to see the 4700 years old structures and listening to the ancient history from the guide. We are sharing our personal experience of that trip to the viewers.

This film covers Cairo & its surrounds; including the Citadel, Souks, Mohammed Ali Mosque, The Pyramids of Giza, The Sphinx and the spectacular Pyramid Son et Lumiere show. We also visited the ancient capital of Memphis, Dahshur, and Sakkara, finishing in Alexandria.
Lower Egypt is the northern-most section of Egypt. It refers to the fertile Nile Delta region, which stretches from the area between Upper Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea — from El-Aiyat south of modern-day Cairo, and Zawyet Dahshur. Lower Egypt was known as Ta-Mehu which means land of papyrus. It was divided into twenty districts called nomes, the first of which was at el-Lisht. Because Lower Egypt was mostly undeveloped scrubland, undeveloped for human life and filled with all types of plant life such as grasses and herbs, the organization of the nomes underwent several changes.
The capital of Lower Egypt was Memphis. Its patron Goddess was the cobra goddess Wadjet. Lower Egypt was represented by the Low Red Crown Deshret, and its symbols were the papyrus and the bee.

Saqqara, also spelled Sakkara or Saccara in English, is a vast, ancient burial ground in Egypt, serving as the necropolis for the Ancient Egyptian capital, Memphis. Saqqara features numerous pyramids, including the world-famous Step pyramid of Djoser, sometimes referred to as the Step Tomb due to its rectangular base, as well as a number of mastabas (Arabic word meaning 'bench'). Located some 30 km (19 mi) south of modern-day Cairo, Saqqara covers an area of around 7 by 1.5 km (4.35 by 0.93 mi).
At Saqqara, the oldest complete stone building complex known in history was built: Djoser's step pyramid, built during the Third Dynasty. Another 16 Egyptian kings built pyramids at Saqqara, which are now in various states of preservation or dilapidation. High officials added private funeral monuments to this necropolis during the entire pharaonic period. It remained an important complex for non-royal burials and cult ceremonies for more than 3,000 years, well into Ptolemaic and Roman times.
North of the area known as Saqqara lies Abusir; south lies Dahshur. The area running from Giza to Dahshur has been used as a necropolis by the inhabitants of Memphis at different times, and it has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979. Some scholars believe that the name Saqqara is not derived from the ancient Egyptian funerary god Sokar, but from a supposed local Berber Tribe called Beni Saqqar.

Memphis was the ancient capital of Aneb-Hetch, the first nome of Lower Egypt. Its ruins are located near the town of Mit Rahina, 20 km (12 mi) south of Giza.
According to legend related by Manetho, the city was founded by the pharaoh Menes. Capital of Egypt during the Old Kingdom, it remained an important city throughout ancient Mediterranean history. It occupied a strategic position at the mouth of the Nile delta, and was home to feverish activity. Its principal port, Peru-nefer, harboured a high density of workshops, factories, and warehouses that distributed food and merchandise throughout the ancient kingdom. During its golden age, Memphis thrived as a regional centre for commerce, trade, and religion.
Memphis was believed to be under the protection of the god Ptah, the patron of craftsmen. Its great temple, Hut-ka-Ptah (meaning Enclosure of the ka of Ptah), was one of the most prominent structures in the city. The name of this temple, rendered in Greek as Aί-γυ-πτoς (Ai-gy-ptos) by the historian Manetho, is believed to be the etymological origin of the modern English name Egypt.
The history of Memphis is closely linked to that of the country itself. Its eventual downfall is believed to be due to the loss of its economic significance in late antiquity, following the rise of coastal Alexandria. Its religious significance also diminished after the abandonment of the ancient religion following the Edict of Thessalonica.
The ruins of the former capital today offer fragmented evidence of its past. They have been preserved, along with the pyramid complex at Giza, as a World Heritage Site since 1979. The site is open to the public as an open-air museum.

Pyramid of Djoser, Sakkara and The Pyramids, Giza, Cairo, Egypt - The pyramids of Giza were placed as one of the seven wonders of the world and which was mainly because of the largest pyramid, Khufu, and it is still among the list until today.
The Pyramids of Giza were built in Egypt during the era of the Pharaohs to serve as tombs for the Pharaohs kings and their queens. Even though the most famously known ones are the three pyramids of Giza which are visited by tourists from all over the world, it was found in 2008 that there are more than 100 pyramids found all over Egypt and which were all used for the same purpose.
Although the three famous pyramids of Giza are considered the most famously known, the pyramid of Djoser was actually the earliest one to be found and which was built in the third dynasty, now found on the land of Sakkara, which is also spelled as Saqqara, and which is the land that features numerous pyramids.
After the Pyramid of Djoser was built, the three other larger ones which are more known came out to the world. These three huge pyramids are known as: Khufu, which is the biggest one and which is also referred to as the Great Pyramid and is known as Cheops. Khafra, which is the second largest pyramid and was built for Khufu's son, also known as Chephren, and what distinguishes this pyramid from the others is the Sphinx that guards it. Menkaure, which is the last pyramid built and which is known as Mycerinus.
The Great Pyramids of Giza, Cairo, Egypt, are not just listed as one of the seven wonders of the world, but they are also the first thing tourists want to see when their feet touch the Egyptian ground, and we should agree with such a thing because all the videos and pictures we see are still not the same as what we see in real while standing in front of those huge pyramids (
The shape of the pyramid did not come to the Pharaohs by luck but they intended to create that shape for their dead bodies and this is believed to go back for different reasons, such as believing that the pyramids represented the rays of the sun as well as giving the dead Pharaoh the chance to symbolically climb to the sky and live forever through the sloping sides of the pyramid.
The stories behind the way the Pharaohs used to think and thus build their tombs is another reason why these are considered among the seven wonders of the world. You should get to see the place in addition to reading about it; its a must!
The entrance fee for the pyramids is 80 Egyptian pounds for foreigners and this will allow you to see the pyramids and the sphinx, but if you are willing to enter Khufu pyramid from the inside, you will pay 100 Egyptian pounds in total. Getting inside there might be an experience but you will have to enter with your back bent and get inside to find nothing but an empty tomb.
Pyramids of Giza are open all days of the week and you are only allowed to go there in the day light. Sometimes there are some parties and events hosted there with the lighting of the pyramids that give the whole thing a different experience.
Among the general tips which we would like to advice you with regarding your visit to the pyramids: there are no restrooms found after the first entrance, so don't postpone it because you might find yourself lost inside. Always wear light clothes and have a cap with you because the weather in summer is always hot and you will sweat a lot, if you are visiting in winter then you will be already dressed in heavy clothes. Always make sure to have your water with you because you will definitely need that. Whenever you think about buying anything from the souvenir men, try to bargain because it will work and they will reduce the price for you if you showed them that you are not interested.
Egypt is filled with historic places that you would enjoy visiting and in addition to the great pyramids of Giza, you could also visit Cairo citadel ( which is also known as Salah El Din Citadel, you could visit the Egyptian Museum ( you could go to the old street of El Moez ( and get across Khan El Khalili market ( and you could search for a lot of other options that will give you loads of information about Egypt.
There are a lot of things to see in Cairo, Egypt, that you will never get the chance to sit free for one day, because every time you search, you will land on a new thing to discover and you might be even the one to make the propaganda for it.
Egypt is one of the countries that carries a lot of history and one which should always go on the list of countries that one have to visit during his/her lifetime, because all the things related to the Pharaohs make it unbelievable to even think about the way these ancient people used to live and work, and the lifestyle they had.

Around 2900 B.C., when Upper and Lower Egypt became one Great Empire, the Pharaohs declared Memphis, which lies in the southern Nile Delta, as their capital city.During its golden years in the second millennium B.C., Memphis extended 15 km, from Gizeh to Sakkara. Up until the time of the Roman Empire, this ancient city’s former buildings had been constructed from air-dried bricks and therefore, due to this process, sadly did not survive the years. Granite and limestone were used solely for its Temples, Palaces And Statues. The frightening and dismissive gesture of the Sphinx was meant to frighten away grave robbers and guard the Necropolis, the place of the dead. Its lion’s body and human head symbolize courage and mental prowess. Apart from Gizeh, Sakkara, in Lower Egypt, was an important city dedicated to the dead. The mother of all pyramids lies here, Pharaoh Djoser's Step Pyramid, which dates back to the year 2600 B.C. For almost 5000 years these stones have survived the forces of nature and who knows what future excavations may reveal from the sands of the Egyptian desert, sands that are not only of time but which held the hopes of the pharaohs and created among the richest treasures known to mankind.

Sakkara is best known for the Step Pyramid, the oldest known of Egypt's 97 pyramids. It was built for King Djoser of the 3rd Dynasty by the architect and genius Imhotep, who designed it and its surrounding complex to be as grand as it was unique and revolutionary. Imhotep was the first to build stone tombs in honour of the king's majesty.
Memphis, was a city and capital of ancient Egypt and an important centre during much of Egyptian history. Memphis is located south of the Nile River delta, on the west bank of the river, and about 24 kms south of modern Cairo.
