Spirit of Ise Shrine -- Japan
I visited Ise Shrines in Japan. These are one of the most important sacred Shinto Shrines in all of Japan.
This is an incredible site which is surrounded by nature and walking up to shrines is spiritual experience.
If you ever do visit Japan, then I highly recommend that you visit this place.
Meoto Iwa - MieXplorer
Geoff here and today on MieXplorer we are checking out Meoto Iwa.
Along the coast, east of Ise, there are some rocks with a special connection to the Ise Grand Shrine.
They are call Meoto Iwa, or “The Married Rocks”.
These two rocks represent the founding gods of the Shito religion and who are the parents of the Ise Grand Shrine’s deity, Amaterasu.
The husband rock is 9m tall and is called Izanagi
While the wife rock is a smaller 3.6m tall and is called Izanami.
The rope connecting the two is a traditional shinto rope called a Shimenawa, which is made of rice stalks and weighs nearly a ton
Three times a year, the rope is replaced during a special ceremony, which has been taking place since at least the 14th century.
The name Meoto Iwa, actually only dates back to the Meiji era.
Before that it was known as Takeishizaki.
The shrine next to the rocks is called Okitama-Jinja.
It was established next to married rocks over 1300 years ago, combining two smaller shrines.
While today the shrine’s main focus is Meoto Iwa and marriage,
This site started as a location to begin a purification journey to the Ise Grand Shrine.
Part of that tradition are the many frog sculptures around the shrine.
The frog is an important symbol as it is believed to be a familiar of the shinto god Sarutahiko no okami.
And in Japanese, frog is pronounced as “kaeru” which also means “to return”
So each frog statue is play on words, wishing for a loved one’s safe return home.
Now Makes sure to check out the areas around Meoto Iwa.
There delicious restaurants that serve tekonezushi and Ise udon authentic Ise pearl vendors and gift shops where you can get your own frog statue.
The recommended times to visit are in May and June, when you can get a glimpse of the sun rising from behind Mount Fuji situated between the Meoto Iwa.

Moyōshi Taiko, Tenjin Matsuri, Osaka 2016, Japan
Yesterday, I went to the Tenjin Matsuri (天神祭) in Osaka. A Sarutahiko (猿田彦), on a white horse opens the procession wearing a tengu mask. This is the first troupe coming out of the Osaka Tenmangu shrine. They are called “Moyōshi Taiko (催太鼓)” and these husky boys clad in red, white and blue are “Ganji (願人)”. They are fiercely beating a large taiko drum.
