Built in 1875 on reclaimed land, by the banking and mercantile company David Sassoon & Co., the docks were owned by Albert Abdullah David Sassoon (1818–1896), son of David Sassoon, a Baghdadi Jew and the leader of the Jewish community in Bombay. It was the first commercial wet dock in western India and helped establish the cotton trade. In 1879, Sassoon Docks and other associated foreshore properties were purchased by the government on behalf of Bombay Port Trust. The Sassoon Docks encouraged the Bombay Presidency to promote the construction of the large Prince's Dock. The Sassoon factories that produced silk and cotton goods in Bombay, also furnished employment for a large amount of native labor.

Sassoon Docks is one of the oldest docks in Mumbai. It was the first wet dock constructed in 1875 in Bombay. It is one of the few docks in the city open to the public. It is situated in the Mumbai harbor in the South Mumbai area of Colaba. It is one of the largest fish markets in Mumbai city. Its neighboring features are Mumbai Port Trust Garden (Sagar Upvan Colaba) and Offices of Fisheries Department, and it overlooks Oyster Rock, an island in the Mumbai harbour, at a distance.
In 2017, street art transformed one of Mumbai’s oldest fishing docks into an exhibition space. Thirty artists from around the world gave the bustling 142-year-old Sassoon Dock, a colorful makeover as part of the St+art Urban Art Festival. The exhibition opened to the public on 11 November 2017.

It was the first commercial wet dock in western India and helped establish the cotton trade. The Sassoon Docks encouraged the Bombay Presidency to promote the construction of the large Prince's Dock. The Sassoon factories that produced silk and cotton goods in Bombay, also furnished employment for a large amount of native labor.

10. Pink Perch
The Rani fish or the Pink Perch is a sought after fish not only for sporting but also for its taste. It is a wonderful dish to serve in any occasion and taste best when pan-fried. The Perch is cooked when its meat turns opaque but is still moist on the inside. Being a lighter food, it is tender and rich in DHA which is the highest in any freshwater fish. Quite naturally, it is healthy and nourishing for the brain. Besides, it contains high-quality protein but has low fat contents.
9. Mackerel (Bangda)
The Indian Mackerel or Bhangda is an oily fish found in warm shallow waters along the coasts of India and Western Pacific oceans. It is a delicious, nutritious with an intense creamy taste packed with rich Omega-3 fatty acids. You could cook it by deep frying or pan frying or prepare it in mouth-watering curry recipe called Bangude puli munchi. Unlike other white fish, Bhangda should be fresh as it tends to turn faster than other varieties of fish.

8. Catfish (or catfishes; order Siluriformes or Nematognathi) are a diverse group of ray-finned fish. Named for their prominent barbels, which resemble a cat's whiskers, catfish range in size and behavior from the three largest species alive, the Mekong giant catfish from Southeast Asia, the wels catfish of Eurasia, and the piraíba of South America, to detritivores (species that eat dead material on the bottom), and even to a tiny parasitic species commonly called the candiru, Vandellia cirrhosa. Neither the armour-plated types nor the naked types have scales. Despite their name, not all catfish have prominent barbels.
7. Eel Fish
An eel is any ray-finned fish belonging to the order Anguilliformes (/æŋˌɡwɪlɪˈfɔːrmiːz/), which consists of four suborders, 20 families, 111 genera, and about 800 species. Eels undergo considerable development from the early larval stage to the eventual adult stage, and most are predators. The term “eel” originally referred to the European eel, and the name of the order means “European eel-shaped.
6. Sole Fish
Sole is a fish belonging to several families. Generally speaking, they are members of the family Soleidae, but, outside Europe, the name sole is also applied to various other similar flatfish, especially other members of the sole suborder Soleoidei as well as members of the flounder family.
5. Tuna Fish
A tuna is a saltwater fish that belongs to the tribe Thunnini, a subgrouping of the Scombridae family. The Thunnini comprise 15 species across five genera, the sizes of which vary greatly, ranging from the bullet tuna up to the Atlantic bluefin tuna. The bluefin averages 2 m, and is believed to live up to 50 years
4. Black Pomfret
The black pomfret is a species of carangid native to reefs of the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean, where it is found at depths from 15 to 105 m, though it is rarely found deeper than 40 m. This species grows to 75 cm in total length and is very important to local commercial fisheries.
3. Pomfret
Pomfret, originally known as Paplet, is a seawater fish consisting of a single bone. It is considered as one of the finest fish for its distinct flavour and taste. Pomfret is quite a hit in Maharashtra and Gujarat since it’s abundantly found in the western coastline of India. The fish, rich in proteins and low in fat, tastes best when fried, grilled or steam.
2. Salmon
Rawas, popularly known as the Indian Salmon, is one of the most devoured fishes in India. Rawas is found in the western coast and is a big favourite with chefs for its succulent white meat and great taste. Studies also suggest that consumption of salmon can prove to be beneficial for the eyesight and overall vision. Once it has been delivered to your kitchen door, make sure you refrigerate it instantly.

1 King Fish
This popular sea fish is considered as quite a delicacy and excellent table fare in most parts of India. In menu cards, it goes by the name of King Fish. Surmai is flavourful by itself and does not require any special preparation to enhance its natural taste. Packed with Omega-3 fatty acids, Surmai is one of the healthiest fishes available. Taking into account its large size, it is usually prepared in form of slices or steaks.
Taste: Semi mild
Seasonality: October – February
