Savannah Beach on Tybee Island, Ga. June 2010
I finally got to see some ocean if only for a little while during my weekend getaway to Savannah last week. I didn't see any last year. I haven't been to Savannah in over 10 years despite it being only 4 1/2 hours away from Atlanta. I was out on the beach in the evening around 8. That's why you don't see any sunshine. ...I don't go to the beach in the middle of the day to cook. Why? Take a look at my photo again. I only go in the morning before noon or after 6 p.m. I have two more videos from the riverfront coming next.

McQueen's Island Trail: between Savannah and Tybee Island, Georgia. March 2, 2019.
We attempted to ride the McQueen's Island Trail, which should be a 5.6 mile trail, but due to washouts, it is probably only a little more than a mile in the center, between two washouts. The part that is still accessible still has some pretty views of the Savannah River and the lowlands. However, be aware that there are signs saying the trail is closed, and getting from the parking area, in the center of the trail off Hwy 80, to the actual trail can be pretty mucky. So don't wear your good shoes. Haha! There were still a lot of people out there, and it seemed to be relatively safe. Go check it out!

5th February 1958: American nuclear bomb lost off the coast of Tybee Island in Georgia, USA
On the afternoon of 4 February 1958, two B-47 bombers took off on a routine Cold War training mission from Homestead Air Force Base in Florida. The aircraft, under the command of Major Howard Richardson, each carried a Mark 15 thermonuclear hydrogen bomb to ensure the handling of the planes reflected what pilots would experience in a real situation.
The simulated combat mission saw the crew fly for more than ten hours over the United States. During this time they refuelled over the Gulf of Mexico before activating an electronic signal over a predetermined target in Georgia to imitate the release of their deadly payload. Having completed their mission, they turned for home.
At around 2am on the morning of 5 February, the B-47s were intercepted by three F-86 aircraft on their own training mission. One of the fighter planes collided with the B-47 flown by Major Richardson, forcing the pilot of the F-86 to eject while the B-47 was seriously damaged. Struggling to control his aircraft, and fearful of the risk of a catastrophic explosion in case of a hard emergency landing with the Mark 15 still on board, Richardson was given permission to jettison the bomb, which he did from around 7,000 feet over Tybee Island in Savannah.
While there are conflicting claims over whether the bomb was a fully functional weapon or had been fitted with a dummy lead core, it still contained 400-pounds of conventional explosives and a quantity of weapons-grade uranium that could have caused significant damage. All attempts to locate the bomb have proven unsuccessful, so its final resting place – and its condition – remain a mystery.
