Tannery Falls and the various other waterfalls and cascades in the general vicinity make up what we would like to call a section of waterfall country. Within a square mile, almost a dozen waterfalls, several worthy of their own pages in this guide, lie on the trail network at Tannery Falls. The main attraction, officially known as Tannery Falls, is an 80-foot series of tall plunges and curving horsetails. The upper 35-feet of this falls are a thundering curtain of whitewater, always impressive, even with little water flow. The bottom half of the falls is a series of narrowing horsetails that end in a shallow pool.

Dryad Falls, Shelburne - Success Hike
Beautiful day hike about 7 miles in the White Mountains: Starting in Shelburne on the Austin Trail to Gentian Pond. Take the AT Cenntential Trail to the beautiful Dream Lake. Continue on to Dryad Falls trail and check out this super cool waterfall. Connect back to Austin trail.
Full Hike: The Devil's Domain of Purgatory Chasm in Massachusetts
Take sinister landmarks such as Devil's Pulpit and Devil's Coffin. Place them in one of the most secular states in the U.S. Result: the intriguing Purgatory Chasm. A diabolical fable broadcast to a skeptical populace. A disguise that barely masks a boulder-hopping dream realized.
Truth is, long ago, a sudden release of glacial water carved out the chasm and upended the boulders.
The whole family, especially the little ones, will enjoy exploring the many caves and crevices along the trail—Fat Man's Misery is high on everybody's list. Or get above the cliffs to imitate the horned embodiment of evil surveying his kingdom. However, a PSA: many accidents had occurred (some were deadly). Are there fiendish forces waiting to strike...? While this short hike will be over long before it gets too spooky, common sense and understanding the risks are beneficial.

My Thoughts:
I suggest visiting this place while in Massachusetts and if looking for something different than a long trek through the wilderness. It is popular, although I did not encounter many people on a Wednesday. The actual loop that I took can be done in no time, but there are other trails and sights to see at the reservation. I really dig the ominous names. There is a parking fee (more for non-residents). Note: the chasm itself is closed during the winter months.

Sugarloaf Mountain or Mount Sugarloaf, is a butte-like mountain located in South Deerfield, Massachusetts, United States, with two summits, North Sugarloaf Mountain 791 ft (241 m) and its more popular knee, South Sugarloaf Mountain 652 ft (199 m). Its cliffs, made of arkose sandstone, are a very prominent landscape feature visible for miles. Despite the low elevation of the summits to the nearby Berkshire Mountains, dramatic cliff faces and a rise of 500 to 600 feet (180 m) from the nearby Connecticut River make the mountain a popular tourist and hiking destination. Sugarloaf Mountain is the southern terminus of the Pocumtuck Range.
The name sugarloaf refers to the loaf-like shape that sugar was once molded into for shipment. The names Sugarloaf Mountain and Mount Sugarloaf are both used to describe this mountain. USGS sources and published hiking maps refer to (North and South) Sugarloaf Mountain. However, the Massachusetts state reservation encompassing them is called the Mount Sugarloaf State Reservation. The name Mount Sugarloaf is sometimes used to describe only the south summit, and the north summit is sometimes described as the Pocumtuck Ridge. Both names are used locally.

North Face of Mount Everett, Berkshire County Massachusetts
This was also shot on February 26th, 2012 as I descended from the summit of Mount Everett in the southwest tip of Massachusetts. Everett is one of the most prominent peaks on the Riga Plateau and offers some breathtaking views. This is on the north / northeast slope and you can see Mount Greylock far in the distance. The Appalachian Trail crosses the peak and in this little area there's actually a bench that has been built there which is where I was sitting when I shot this video.
