Mooreland Mansion, built in 1898 as the summer home for the family of transportation magnate Edward Moore, has been restored and is part of Lakeland Community College as an elegant wedding and meeting venue.
When Edward Moore had his Mooreland mansion built in 1898, it was his summer country home.
Designed by Edward Oviatt in neo-classical style and surrounded by more than 1,300 acres, including a working farm, the 44-room, 20,000-square-foot home allowed Moore's seven-member family to escape the heat of Cleveland in summer. He and his wife, Louise Chamberlain Moore, had five children: Margaret, Franklyn, Kathryn, Edward Jr. and Elizabeth.
The home was enlarged in 1906 by architect Milton Dyer, who later designed Cleveland City Hall. Landscape architect A. Donald Gray designed the layout of the first in-ground swimming pool in Lake County, fountains, rose gardens and a nine-hole golf course.
There also was a petting zoo area for the children, a tennis court and two orchards. Water for the swimming pool was pumped up from the Chagrin River.

The line traverses a wide variety of terrain and interesting locations from industrial districts to tough scenic mountain grades.
This line was inherited by Conrail on April 1st, 1976 when Conrail took over the bankrupt Anthracite railroads in the northeast.
Under Conrail, the Delaware & Hudson was granted trackage rights on the Lehigh Line from a connection at Dupont, PA to access Oak Island and Philadelphia via Allentown on former Lehigh Valley and Reading lines.
In volume 1, we'll view Conrail and D&H trains on the Lehigh Line from New Jersey to the Southern Tier between 1979 and 1986 through the films of Jonathan Reck.

National Donut Day Made Possible by The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army in Chicago celebrated the first National Donut Day in 1938 to help those in need during the Great Depression and to commemorate the work of the “Donut Lassies,” who served donuts to soldiers during World War I.
In 1917, The Salvation Army began a mission to provide spiritual and emotional support for U.S. soldiers fighting in France during World War I. About 250 volunteers traveled overseas and set up small huts near the front lines where they could give soldiers clothes, supplies and, of course, baked goods.
Despite discovering that serving baked goods would be difficult considering the conditions of the huts and the limited rations, two officers – Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance – began frying donuts in a small pan. These tasty treats boosted morale and won the hearts of many soldiers.
Nicknamed “Donut Lassies,” the women who served donuts to troops are often credited with popularizing the donut in the United States when the troops (nicknamed “doughboys”) returned home from war.
The donut now serves as a symbol of the comfort that The Salvation Army provides to those in need through its many social services programs. The Salvation Army still serves donuts, in addition to warm meals and hydration, to those in need during times of disaster.
National Donut Day is held annually on the first Friday in June, and The Salvation Army celebrates the work of the original Donut Lassies by delivering donuts to those in need and to donut lovers across the country.

SUMMARY
=======
Montgomery is the capital city of the U.S. state of Alabama and the county seat of Montgomery County. Named for Richard Montgomery, it stands beside the Alabama River, on the coastal Plain of the Gulf of Mexico. In the 2010 Census, Montgomery's population was 205,764. It is the second most populous city in Alabama, after Birmingham, and is the 118th most populous in the United States. The Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area's population in 2010 was estimated at 374,536; it is the fourth largest in the state and 136th among United States metropolitan areas. The city was incorporated in 1819 as a merger of two towns situated along the Alabama River. It became the state capital in 1846, representing the shift of power to the south-central area of Alabama with the growth of cotton as a commodity crop of the Black Belt and the rise of Mobile as a mercantile port on the Gulf Coast. In February 1861, Montgomery was chosen the first capital of the Confederate States of America, which it remained until the Confederate seat of government moved to Richmond, Virginia, in May of that year. In the middle of the 20th century, Montgomery was a major center of events and protests in the Civil Rights Movement, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Selma to Montgomery marches.
In addition to housing many Alabama government agencies, Montgomery has a large military presence, due to Maxwell Air Force Base; public universities Alabama State University, Troy University (Montgomery campus), and Auburn University at Montgomery; two private post-secondary institutions, Faulkner University and Huntingdon College; high-tech manufacturing, including Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama; and many cultural attractions, such as the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.
Two ships of the United States Navy have been named after the city, including USS Montgomery.Montgomery has also been recognized nationally for its downtown revitalization and new urbanism projects. It was one of the first cities in the nation to implement Smart Code Zoning.
Lehigh Valley Black Diamond steam engines
The Black Diamond, also known as the Black Diamond Express, was the flagship passenger train of the Lehigh Valley Railroad (LV).[1] It ran from New York to Buffalo[1] from 1896 until 1959, when the Lehigh Valley's passenger service was reduced to four mainline trains.
Service between Jersey City, New Jersey and Buffalo began on 18 May 1896,[3] It originally used the Pennsylvania Railroad's Exchange Place Station, where passengers could board ferries to station to New York.[3] In 1913, the train was forced by the PRR to vacate the station so the eastern terminus was changed to the Central Railroad of New Jersey's Communipaw Terminal.[3] That lasted only five years, as the United States Railroad Administration decided in 1918 to re-route all Lehigh Valley trains into New York Penn Station to centralize traffic.[3] For most of its existence the Black Diamond used the Lehigh Valley Terminal in Buffalo. The Black Diamond competed with services offered by the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad and the New York Central Railroad; although slower than either of these, its level of service won it the nicknames the Handsomest Train in the World and the Honeymoon Express.[4] In 1940 the train was provided with the line's first set of lightweight streamlined coaches, designed by Otto Kuhler, who also designed streamlined shroudings for the existing 4-6-2 Pacific locomotives that hauled the train.[1] Later, the Pacific engine was replaced by Alco's PA-1, which was painted Cornell red with black playing a secondary role.[1] The black was used in a role similar to the cat whiskers that appeared on the PRR's GG-1's.[1]
The train's last run was on 12 May 1959,[5] due to widespread cuts to all Lehigh Valley passenger service.[1][2] All passenger service ended on February 3, 1961.
