Hiking & Sunset
I finally got the courage to drive the BMW! I drove us to Sand Beach in Acadia National Park where we started our hiking journey along the Ocean Path. We walked along the rocky coast to the famous Thunder Hole, though unfortunately the tides were not in our favor :(. We would have gone further to Otter Cliff (next time), but we had to make it back in time for our lunch reservation at Portside Grill.
Sailing time! We took the Sunset Windjammer Cruise on the Margaret Todd schooner - the only working 4-masted sailing vessel in New England. Derek himself helped raise the sails! Very relaxing, with a live entertainer playing requests on his guitar, and gorgeous views of the sun beginning to set over the bay. Of course the best part was capturing a Bald Eagle in all its glory high up in the trees on one of the islands. Dinner was at McKay's Public House where we had our own private room. Appetizers to die for - Baked Brie in phyllo dough and Wexford Potato Cakes. Sooo good! Derek got the Lobster Mac & Cheese while I dined on McKay's Shepherd's Pie.
Boothbay Harbor at Twilight ~ Signal Point, Wotton's Wharf, & ship American Glory
Video shot at Boothbay Harbor on the evening of Sunday, September 15, 2013. We had wandered to the end of Commercial Street, cut through some woods on a footpath, and found ourselves at the Signal Point Condominium complex.(McFarland Point Drive) and Signal Point Marina/Wotton's Wharf.
The largish vessel docked at the wharf was the American Glory, operated by American Cruise Lines. She was on an eight-day cruise along the coast of Maine.

Living on a 4 Season Houseboat - Beautiful Floating Tiny House!
In this video, we meet Bonnie from Wakefield, Québec, Canada who is living on a gorgeous tiny house boat that is full of character and charm. The River Den (or La Tannière) has custom-made asymmetrical windows, a classic ship's wheel, antique fireplace, and hand-built furniture — all of which give the boat a warm and cozy feel that makes you feel at home as soon as you step on board. The boat is docked on the shore of the Gatineau River and Bonnie lives in it as often as she can when she's not renting it out on Airbnb (
The tiny houseboat was designed by Bonnie and her boatbuilding friend, Denis Tremblay, who is known locally as the Wakefield Pirate. Denis and a few of his friends built the boat by hand, including the aluminum frame and the custom windows, the cabinets, and the grill floor in the loft.
The boat is built on 5 pontoons that are designed to provide flotation while still taking on some water to keep the boat weighed down in the water for stability. The pontoons are also designed to freeze in the ice and are made by a local company called Les Quais Navigables (
It's a 4-season house boat that is fully insulated and has an antique wood burning fireplace to provide heat in winter. For power, they installed a deep cycle marine battery that provides 12-Volt power for the lights, bilge pump, and navigation lights. They have a Separett composting toilet from Sweden ( and a sink that pumps water from the river for washing dishes. For refrigeration, Bonnie uses a cooler with ice, but she might invest in some solar panels so that she can power a proper fridge eventually.
The main floor has a kitchen, toilet, dining room and living room, and upstairs there is cozy a sleeping loft with a grill floor that allows heat to rise through the floor, and sun & dust to travel down to the main level. One of the windows in the loft opens up onto a gorgeous rooftop patio with a cedar deck and has space for some solar panels if/when Bonnie decides she needs them.
The boat has a gas motor and can be taken out on the river which is quite impressive considering it's size! To make sure the boat was still road worthy, they built a wedge roof over the loft that can be taken apart if Bonnie wants to transport it to a different location. The boat is currently docked in the quaint little town of Wakefield, Québec where there are cute cafes, restaurants and shops right across the street.

Captain of the Bowdoin - a chance to meet him and say hello
I had a chance to interview the Captain of the Schooner The Bowdoin that is sailing in honour of the Captain Bob Bartlett 100th anniversary in Newfoundland. Who was Captain Bob Bartlett? I wrote the following for the Captain Bartlett carving on the Heritage Tree: The truth was I could not stop myself in pursuit of adventure. I was committed to the Arctic. I'd got the poison in my veins. Captain Bob Bartlett of Brigus, Newfoundland!
From the glory of Canada's East coast and Newfoundland's past, comes the carving on the Newfoundland Heritage Tree of one of the greatest sea captains of the far north. Outgoing and personable, Bob Bartlett was a leader of Arctic expeditions, a scientist, a scholar, and a discoverer.
On Admiral Peary's expedition to the North Pole in 1909, it was Bartlett(1875-1946) who navigated through treacherous seas and who, with an advance team of Eskimos and dog sleds, cut a path ahead of Parry across hundreds of miles of ice. Within striking distance of the North Pole, Bartlett waited for Peary and then returned to his ship to make ready for the return trip. This year honours the centenary of his expedition.

Steve Bunker Dec. 7, 2003 Oral History Interview
Steve Bunker's background and a major love is the sea. Also a history buff, he originally came to Baltimore to help build a Baltimore Clipper in Baltimore Harbor, stayed on for a few years as Baltimore's maritime historian and eventually opened his shop in Fell's Point, The China Sea, a marine-salvage and antique shop complete with live parrots. A community leader for many years, Steve is remembered for representing the working waterfront community and helping to moderate development. He and Sharon Bondroff moved their shop to Maine in 1999 after they decided they could no longer afford the rents in Fell's Point.
In this interview, Steve tells his stories about Fell's Point and its history. The interview was conducted in his home in Maine on February 8, 2003 by Jacquie and Kraig Greff of Tonal Vision LLC in preparation for the documentary, Fell's Point Out of Time.

The Cruise of the Snark (1913) is a memoir of Jack and Charmian London's 1907-1909 voyage across the Pacific. His descriptions of surf-riding, which he dubbed a royal sport, helped introduce it to and popularize it with the mainland. London writes: Through the white crest of a breaker suddenly appears a dark figure, erect, a man-fish or a sea-god, on the very forward face of the crest where the top falls over and down, driving in toward shore, buried to his loins in smoking spray, caught up by the sea and flung landward, bodily, a quarter of a mile.
