Podcast: Dan Thurlow on Glasgow’s Scottish Event Campus
This week on the Event Industry News podcast, our host, James Dickson, welcomed the director of exhibition sales at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC), Dan Thurlow.
The SEC is a meeting and event venue in Glasgow composed of three buildings: the SEC Centre (five interconnected exhibition and meeting spaces), the SEC Armadillo (3,000-capacity) and The SSE Hydro (a 13,000-capacity concert, sporting and special event arena).
Originally the SECC (Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre), the venue rebranded to the SEC to offer more clarity on its venues and services.
It offers event spaces suitable for conferences, exhibitions, sporting events, concerts and corporate events. It can be accessed via train, taxi or plane; the SEC shares a city with Glasgow Airport and has a dedicated Metro station on the campus.
Dan described the in-house team’s approach as hands-on, helping with concepts and discussing with clients about their objectives and requirements. “We want to make shows as strong as possible – we don’t want unsuccessful launches.”
Praising the venue’s location, Dan stated that visitors have a broad choice of hotels, restaurants, bars etc., from which to choose should they want to take a break from exhibiting or their meetings. He said: “We encourage them to travel into Glasgow and see the best of what the city has to offer. Exhibitors are sometimes here three, four nights at a time.
“There’s lots to do in the immediate vicinity but two stops on the train and you’re in the city.”

UK: Die-in protest slams 'War-mongers' in Glasgow arms conference
A large group of protesters staged a 'die-in' protest' outside the Underwater Defense Technology (UDT) conference at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) exhibition centre in Glasgow on Tuesday, to rally against the city's partaking in the arms conference, showcasing some of the largest defence companies in the UK including Babcock and BAE Systems.
Antiwar, pro-Scottish independence and pro-Palestine protesters greeted delegates early in the morning at the entrance to the event's venue with chants of Shame on you and Warmongers as they arrived to register.
Police heavily monitored the event as a die-in protest was accompanied by a read-out of names of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in Gaza in recent protests.
The conference, taking place from June 26 to 28, will reportedly focus on the Trident Defence, UK's covering of the development, procurement and operation of nuclear weapons, especially of the country's submarine based nuclear deterrent.
The fair has stirred controversy in the city with the Scottish National Party (SNP)-controlled Glasgow council being reluctant to withdraw support for the event, despite the party being nationally opposed to trident.
Criticism has forced leaders to review future conferences on human rights grounds.

Calls for event by controversial preacher Franklin Graham to be cancelled in Glasgow
THE Scottish Event Campus (SEC) in Glasgow is reviewing an upcoming event by controversial preacher Franklin Graham after calls for it to be scrapped.
The Finnieston-based conference space is due to host The Graham Tour starring the American evangelist on May 30.
But an online petition has been created asking for the venue to cancel the event.
Glasgow Green MSP Patrick Harvie has also called for the SEC to follow the lead of the ACC Liverpool who cancelled his scheduled tour date there.
Mr Graham, the son of the late Billy Graham, has previously described gay marriage as 'a sin' and has repeatedly attacked Islam.
He has also said America should stop all immigration of Muslims to the US until this threat with Islam has been settled.
This week, after cancelling the event the ACC Liverpool conference arena said it had been made aware of a number of statements which we consider to be incompatible with our values.
The petition started by Church of Scotland minister the Rev Bryan Kerr has attracted over 100 signatures so far.
The petition states: We call on the SEC to follow the decision of the Liverpool ACC Arena and recognise that the views of Franklin Graham have the real potential alienating a large number of the population of the area they serve.
If they are unwilling to take the decision on moral and ethical grounds then they ought to consider carefully the impact alienating the LGBTQI+ communities in Scotland, as well as faith and religious groups, will have on their business.
Franklin Graham does not represent mainstream Christianity and his visit to Glasgow will undermine much of the good work carried out by churches in our nation. We ask those who are able to influence this decision to make a stand for what is right.
Murray Trophy - Glasgow
Jamie Murray has won six Grand Slam trophies, captured 23 ATP Tour titles and played a massive part in Great Britain's historic Davis Cup victory in 2015.
Now, together with the LTA, he's bringing world-class tennis to Glasgow. The Murray Trophy - Glasgow will take place in September at Scotstoun Leisure Centre.
Returning to Scotstoun Sports Campus with both singles and doubles draws taking place 16-22 September, the tournament builds on the success of last year’s inaugural event – having worked with Event Scotland – which saw matches played out in front of almost 3,200 fans during the week.

Glasgow, Scotland - Travel Around The World | Top best places to visit in Glasgow
Top best places to visit in Glasgow, Scotland
Glasgow is located at the west end of Scotland's Central Belt on the banks of the River Clyde.
Glasgow is the biggest city in Scotland and also known as the Second City of the Empire, which is a reference to the Victorian and industrial past of the city.
The Clock Tower of the original City Chambers dominates by the Glasgow Cross the original medieval center of the city.
Today’s heart of the city, George Square, is populated by several statues of famous figures from history.
Around the square are prominent buildings including the City Chambers and the headquarters of the City Council.
Near the square are many places worth visiting, such as:
The Gallery of Modern Art,
Home of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Royal Concert Hall,
And lots of interesting modern, Edwardian and Victorian architecture on every corner.
Glasgow Cathedral is the best preserved example of a large church that has survived since the medieval period in Scotland.
Behind the Cathedral atop a steep hill is the Necropolis, a cemetery known as “City of the Dead” which offers a beautiful view.
No visitor should leave the city without taking a walk along Clyde River.
Glasgow also has big parks such as Glasgow Green, one of the major venues for open air events, which has the famous Nelson’s Memorial.
The People’s Palace and Winter Gardens, a folk museum and a greenhouse, is also inside the park, just next to the West Brewery.
Another green area, Kelvingrove Park, is very popular among students.
Because it is adjacent to one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the country, the University of Glasgow.
The most prominent landmark in the park however, is the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, holding the city’s grandest public exhibitions.
Modern buildings in Glasgow include the Clyde Auditorium, a concert hall;
And a multipurpose indoor arena, the Hydro.
Glasgow has 3 big football stadiums. Hampden Park serves as the national stadium.
Celtic Park is the home ground of Celtic Football Club,
And next to it stands Velodrome.
And Ibrox Stadium,
Where the Glasgow Rangers play their home matches.
