Snorkeling in the “Horseshoe” at Big Pine Key, FL
I spent today teaching my kids how to snorkel and enjoy God’s aquarium in Big Pine Key. This area known as the “Horseshoe” by local snorkelers and divers used to be an old quarry, which the coral dugout was used to build the Oversea Highway. There is a 40+ feet drop off in the middle, in which lies a sunken ambulance.

Best Snorkel Trip in the Florida Keys | Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary
Snorkeling at Bahia Honda State Park at Looe Key Reef. Today we are going snorkeling out of Bahia Honda State Park to Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary, Looe Key Reef, in the Florida Keys is an amazing experience. You get to see sharks and Goliath groupers nearly every time and then spotted eagle rays and all sorts of other tropical fish live there. This is the oldest protected portion of the reef system in the Florida Keys and it is booming with life!

Florida Keys Kayak Dive- Big Pine Key
A great little gem of a kayak dive on Big Pine Key in the Florida Keys. Long Beach Drive. We found an invasive and potentially life threatening species, the Lionfish, within minutes of getting into the water. Also: You're gonna see a Key Deer on Big Pine Key, every time you venture off of the Overseas Highway.

Undersea Lunacy in the Florida Keys
No Compass is Needed for Navigating the Keys' quirky underwater fun. The Florida Keys are widely acclaimed for offbeat celebrations, and divers can find quirky, uniquely marine activities along the island chain.
Famous for being an underwater nuptial niche, the continental United States' only living coral barrier reef offers wedding party and guests the opportunity to don boutonnières and bathing suits to tie the knot with exotic sea creatures in attendance.
Annual challenges beneath the sea include Key Largo's Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest every October, egg-sploring for hidden eggs during the Underwater Easter Egg Hunt and racing along the 523-foot-long Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg with diver propulsion vehicles during the Vandenberg Underwater Grand Prix each May.
Costumed mermaids, The Snorkeling Elvises, an offbeat Alice in Waterland tea party and an underwater band complete with tuba all have been spotted over the years at the Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival. The submerged songfest is held each July at Looe Key Reef, an area of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary approximately six miles south of Big Pine Key.
Offbeat though these activities may be, many carry a serious message of reef preservation and diver awareness, emphasizing ways to enjoy the reef while minimizing impacts on the underwater environment.

Only in the Keys Underwater Music Festival
Explore part of the continental United States’ only living coral barrier reef Saturday, July 13, off the Florida Keys -- while rocking to a unique sub-sea concert dedicated to reef protection. It’s the annual Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival, and it’s unlike any other dive or snorkel experience on the planet.
This “Only in the Keys” adventure takes place each year at Looe Key Reef, an area of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary about 6 miles south of Big Pine Key.
Broadcast underwater by a Keys radio station, the music enhances the underwater experience for divers discovering the Keys’ fantastic realm of tropical fish, coral formations and other marine life.
Some participants wear costumes, portraying everything from mermaids to rock stars, and a few even pretend to play underwater instruments sculpted by a Florida Keys artist. It’s all designed to encourage preservation of the Keys’ rich coral reef ecosystem.

About 300 snorkelers and divers submerged on Saturday to listen to a local radio station's music broadcast beneath the sea in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
The quirky Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival held at Looe Key Reef off Big Pine Key along the continental United States' only living coral barrier reef, featured four hours of commercial-free music.
Music underwater has a real ethereal feel to it, said festival founder Bill Becker, the news director at WWUS radio station, which broadcasts to the Florida Keys.
You don't just hear it through your ears, you hear it through your whole body - through your jawbone, through your skull.
Songs included Under the Sea from Disney's The Little Mermaid, the Beatles' Octopus's Garden and Jimmy Buffett's Fins.
The songs were piped underwater through speakers suspended from boats strategically positioned at the reef.
Divers put on their own show underwater, pretending to play instruments like a trombone-fish, sitar-fish and clambourine.
According to Becker, people weren't the only ones that seemed to enjoy the underwater concert.
The fish and marine life seem to enjoy it, Becker said, adding they kind of sway with the music.
As well as offering an unusual experience for dive and snorkel enthusiasts, the broadcast included diver awareness announcements emphasising ways to enjoy the coral reef ecosystem while minimising impacts on the underwater environment.
